The Space

Caveland is a complex of cave houses and terraces with amazing views and small gardens with lemon, pomegranate, orange, pear, vanilla and pistachio trees. The decor is largely home-spun, in refurbishing the walls we have used many types of local techniques and the rooms are furnished with refurbished antique and local furniture. In the late 18th century, this complex was used as a winery. In May 2011 we opened Caveland as a boutique hostel.

Each Cave has an A/C or a fan that can be turned into heating, heating blanket for the bed (you will appreciate this during the winter months), small kitchen corner with a fridge, double bed, closet.

Possibility to rent per week or month for discounted prices IN THE WINTER!

Guest Access

There is also a big communal kitchen for cooking, outdoor terraces and gardens with our dog Klara that stays outside! You can browse our bookshelves, join morning/evening yoga classes, chill out at the pool (June-September) or play tennis at our courts.

Interaction with Guests

You will be welcomed by our volunteers or receptionist. We live in a village 3 minutes drive from Caveland and we are daily at Caveland, too.

The Neighborhood

Location: Caveland, Karterados- Santorini. 25 minutes walking distance from Fira town or 5 minutes car drive.

Supermarkets: 3 minutes walk (2 mini markets) and 10 minutes walk (big supermarket with a weekly fruit and vegetable market)

Restaurants: plenty of restaurants on the way from Caveland to Fira town, the closest restaurant is 3 min walk.

Beaches: 5 minutes drive is a local beach in Karterados, 15 minutes with a bus (email hidden) beach in Kamari, 25 minutes with a bus (email hidden) beach in Perissa.

Getting around

10 minutes walk is a local bus stop in Karterados village (at Zotos bakery). All the busses heading to Fira town and to the south of the island pass this bus stop.

We also recommend you to take a driving license with you. Renting a car or a quad bike is easy, reasonably priced and the best if you wish to discover the island.

  • Great little place to stay. It has a beautiful pool and the place itself is quite spacious. It was nice sitting out at night and meeting the other hostel guests. You need to rent a quad to get around as it's a bit far from everything. The breakfast is very simple.

  • Caveland was our favorite accommodations on our 2 week excursion in Europe! It is a quaint little place with beautiful flowers, a big pool, and free breakfast. The caves are just what you would imagine: a cave. We had a nice little front room with a lounging area and kitchenette. The people at receptions were quite friendly and helpful. They have an agreement with a local guy who rents ATVs and gives a discount for Caveland people. Overall, great experience. It is tricky to find in the dark, so be sure to read he directions carefully before your arrival.

  • We enjoyed our experience at Caveland. It is a short walk out of town, and it feels very private. Nice and quiet (except for the yoga above our room in the mornings).
Check in and out were very simple and staff were pleasant. We did not meet the hosts, but they were very good with replying on AirBnB, and gave excellent directions to Caveland from the port!

  • Caveland is a really nice place to stay. The caves are beautiful and the staff is really friendly. You are close to Fira, but it is a bit more quiet, witch makes the stay at Caveland relaxing. I can definitly recommend a stay here.

  • Caveland was very fun and relaxing. On arrival, we walked from Fira which took about 20 minutes. It is just far enough out of Fira to not see many tourists, but still convenient access to all parts of the island. Andy helped us rent a quad and a car. Very unique location.

  • We had a great time at Caveland, staying 8 nights in one of the private rooms. It is such good value for money compared to other places in Santorini. We didn't actually meet Kostas and Veronika but the two receptionists, Andy and Rachel, were very helpful and welcoming. Caveland itself is about a 15-20 minute walk to Fira, and there are shops just up the road in Karterados. The old part of the village is lovely and definitely worth an explore. The room itself is spacious and clean, and it was great having a small kitchen/living area. The bed was comfortable and our sheets and towels were regularly changed. The courtyard outside was a nice bonus. Our only criticism was that, although lovely, the Caveland dogs would sometimes bark constantly for hours at a time. However this is just a small comment as we really loved everything else about the place, and would definitely recommend it. Although there are a few things to do within walking distance, we did hire a car which was great for exploring Santorini, especially places like Pyrgos, Megalachori, Emporio and Exo Gonia. Food wise, everywhere was amazing and great value - would particularly recommend Salt and Pepper in Fira (recommended to us by Caveland), Sava's which is a local restaurant in Karterados, and George's at the old port in Fira. In Oia, Atlantis book shop is definitely worth a visit. Overall we had a fantastic holiday, thanks mostly to the comfortable and welcoming stay at Caveland. Hope to come back soon!

  • That is a very fantastic place, a great cave to taste the local life. I feel they are quite passionate.
The location is not far from Fira, i suggest to take the taxi to Fira, only 5 euros, very relax compare with the local bus, they did not respect the timetable, and it costs 1.6 Euros.

Tips: there are many dogs, 1,2,3, 4...maybe more. but they are very kind when they got your smell. haha

  • Caveland, oh Caveland! We already miss you. We had the pleasure of staying for a month at Caveland on Santorini, and it felt like home to us. The atmosphere is relaxed, the grounds are beautiful, and the people and dogs are friendly! We rented a cave apartment, with a private bathroom and small kitchen. The kitchen is not fully equipped, but Veronika assured us when we arrived that we could have full use of the hostel kitchen if needed. The only downside is that the hostel is a far walk to Fira town. However, the lovely village of Karterados has everything and there is a bus stop near by for busses going to Akrotiri, and Perissa and Kamari beaches. Caveland is also very affordable, perfect for budget travelers like us. We highly recommend for long or short stays, and we will stay with them if we return to Santorini.
