Want to know more about Marin County's rich environmental, sustainable agriculture and organic food history? Just ask siblings Vivien and Michael Straus - we can share stories about the Marin Agricultural Land Trust ((URL HIDDEN) - co-founder by our mother Ellen; stories about launching Straus Family Creamery (owned separately by our brother) and the local artisan cheese scene (Vivien created the (URL HIDDEN) map and app). Want to talk about psychic phenomena? That's Michael's department :)
Come out to Marshall - the only town where the population minus the elevation equals the speed limit.
You'll have access to our large gardens and 'compound' (great for outdoor games, frisbee golf, or just chillin') and the beach is literally a 30-second walk from the front door. Barns and outbuildings are off-limits (though a small barn can be make available for small events). As we are a working farm, the pastures are off-limits, unless accompanied by Michael or Vivien who, with advance notice, are happy to give a walking tour of the ranch, including stories about growing up on the farm, the evolution of the organic food / sustainable agriculture / farmland conservation movements of Marin County.
Interaction with Guests
You'll be welcomed by Michael and/or Vivien Straus. Our sister Miriam lives back East, but she might be here in the Summer to teach some agricultural classes for kids and adults.
West Marin is a foodie Mecca, including Nick’s Cove, Hog Island Oyster Company, Marshall Store, Rocker Oysterfellas, Osteria Stellina, Cowgirl Creamery, Heidrun Meadery and so much more. Pick up some pastries at the Tomales Bakery or Bovine Bakery in Point Reyes Station; cook at home with our terrific kitchen; shuck and BBQ oysters on our patio and/or ask us about having an incredible meal prepared by Stacy, our on-site and truly terrific caterer / private chef.
Activities to consider include kayaking on Tomales Bay (and maybe even escaping to a secluded beach with a picnic basket of goodies from Tomales Bay Foods); hiking in the Point Reyes National Seashore; heading to Limantour Beach or Dillon Beach; or taking a tour of local artisan cheese makers and farms.
No public transportation - you might want to bring bikes and kayaks, though!
