The Neighborhood

Bophut is really two places: Bophut beach, which sweeps down several kilometres between Big Buddha and Maenam beaches and perhaps one of the oldest places on the island, the charming Fisherman's Village, which takes up the middle section of the beach.

Fisherman's Village is fast gaining a reputation that stretches way beyond Samui for being the most elegant and well-preserved place on the island. Lined by old wooden Chinese shop-houses, interspaced with a few modern buildings that match the tone, it retains a distinctly Mediterranean feel. This has probably got a lot to do with the fact that it was the main French outpost on the island for many years.

Mixed in among the shops are several boutiques, selling high quality clothing and jewellery. There are also some dive shops in the area, offering scuba lessons or day dives to sites in the famous Ang Thong Marine Park, Sail Rock or Koh Tao Island.

La Sirene also offers some selected tours to secret spots in the surrounding islands or some Jeep rides to places difficult to access for visitors not familiar with the island, mainly the Secret Buddha Garden. Try an elephant ride in the tropical forest or go for a fishing trip on a local fishing boat (with local fisherman) around the island of Koh Phangan.

Getting around

One of the great things about staying on Koh Samui is that the island is really easy to get around and if you feel that you ever want to get away from lounging around on the beach then there are plenty of different transportation options open to you.

For example, you could rent a car and travel around the islands main coastal ring road in little over an hour. Alternatively, you might want to hire a motorcycle to travel from one of the islands popular tourist attractions to another. Whatever you decide to do and no matter what your budget you will be able to find a suitable way of travelling around the island.

Motorcycle Rental
This is probably the most popular way in which many visitors to Koh Samui choose to get around the island. Renting a motorcycle and going off to explore every nook and cranny of Koh Samui can be fun, exciting and also offer great value for money.

Car Rental:

Like hiring a motorcycle, hiring a car can be a really great way to explore the Koh Samui, as well as being convenient and often good value for money. Many of the leading international car rental companies all have branches on Koh Samui including Avis, Hertz, Budget Car Rentals and National Car Hire. There are also a number of locally based independent agents and private individuals that will be able to hire you a car during you stay. When it comes to car rental on the island, prices are likely to vary from anywhere in the region of (phone number hidden) Baht per day, depending on the type of car you choose to hire. Many locally based operators will normally rent Suzuki or Honda jeeps, whilst the major, international rental companies will have a wider range of cars to choose from, which will include both automatic and manual sedans, air conditioned vehicles, as well as jeeps and 4×4’s.

Taxis on Koh Samui:

getting-around-koh-samui-taxiFor those who want to travel around the island in air conditioned comfort then using one of the islands many yellow taxis will probably be the best option for you. Usually located outside the airport or driving around the islands main roads, they operate both day and night.

The downside with using a local taxi on Koh Samui is that the fares can be extraordinarily high and even though most of the taxis have a meter, the drivers will very rarely turn it on.

Songthaews on Koh Samui:

getting-around-koh-samui-songtaewThe cheaper alternative to taking a taxi on Koh Samui is to use one of the islands many Songthaews. These serve as the islands local buses and are basically a pick-up truck that has been painted red and that has seats in the back for people to sit on. They usually only operate in daylight hours. However the destination of each Songthaew is normally written on the front of the vehicle in English.

Even though the Songthaews follow an official route around the islands roads, there are no official bus stops, so in order to get the Songthaew to stop you ether need to press the button inside the vehicle or bang on the roof to get the drivers attention! A Songthaew fare can range from about 20 to 60 Baht and this is paid to the driver when you have just exited the vehicle.

  • If you're ever in need of a great hosts, then I can strongly suggest Elizabeth and Jason. They were extremely helpful, talkative and considerate.

When staying in someone else's property, I always want to feel welcome and that's exactly how they made me feel. They helped me learn to ride the scooter, lent me a tennis racket and even start your visit with a basket of little amenities.

Replay itself is well known resort in Samui. It's facilities really are top-notch. For tennis lovers, and who will stay for a long time, I recommend meeting Marco, a French tennis coach, and having a lesson or two!

The resort gets plenty of sun all day, and there's always people around, including swimmers at 10pm! There's onsite restaurant, which is more then adequate for a meal anytime of day (the bananas shakes are very refreshing!)

The 24hr FamilyMart provides the basics, but you'll be most wanting to head to Fishermans Village for a pleasant shopping / eating experience.

Replay is really only accessible by scooter / taxi / bus. The nearest places are about 15 minutes walk either way along the road or beach (Fishermans village / Bangrak). Bangrak beach is literally across the road, but it's the far left edge, so you'll want to head towards the middle for a nicer spot.

That said, a walk along the beach is always pleasant, and for access to the airport and the Big Buddha Pier (for Koh Phagnan - Full Moon Party?), the location is unbeatable.

My stay was dampened as I had just severely sprained my ankle before arrival, so only got to use the facilities in the 3rd week. When I did, Replay really started to prove itself as an all-in-one resort..now if only I wasn't afraid of falling of a scooter ;)

By the way, if you like to party, the main area, Chaewang is about a 15 minute taxi / scooter ride away, but both Bangrak and Fishermans Village are great starting points!

  • One of the best AirBNB experiences I've had. Elizabeth was extremely friendly, welcoming, and professional at the same time, with all of the details executed extremely well. The apartment was very modern and clean, as was the whole complex. Great facilities, great location, great experience.

  • This is a fantastic location for anyone! It is away from the hussle but close enough if you want to get amongst it. It is very close to Fishermans Village which is just the most fab spot to be.
Elizabeth and Jason are great host and very accommodating. We hired a bike (scooter) from them at a good price and it was easier then having to go looking and we didnt have to hand over our pasport.
The pool, gym, sauna and steam room were really good!
We will and already have recommended this place to others and we look forward to getting back in the near future.

  • Elizabeth was awesome to work with! She met me as soon as I arrived and helped me with my bags to the room. The room was lovely, clean, cool, and quiet. I slept like a rock and had everything I needed. The facility has great amenities and a very helpful staff. It is a short (15 minute) walk to fishermans village but depending on the time of day a cab may be a safer choice for transit (due to traffic). Cabs are easily accesible. I would highly recommend this property for your visit to Samui! No complaints at all!
