Sun Bird is available to book beginning the first week in May 2025. `
Wake up to bird song in a cozy and eclectic space, with simple finishes, a soaring ceiling and windows that create a peaceful balance with nature, unique furnishings, an open-concept layout and a deck. Formerly an artist's studio, Sun Bird has the charm of uncomplicated things. The photo of the patio shows the cabin (a family member stays there) that shares the 1.5 acre lot. A very quiet spot but not completely isolated.

The space
The Riceville Valley is a storied place...the first settlers and farmers arrived in what is now Buncombe county in the late 1700s. Many of the descendants of those adventurers still live in the area. In the case of our Little Sun Bird retreat, the great-grandfather of a neighbor built the cabin that shares "the land" with the studio. The space is very serene except for the rooster that cries in the afternoon oddly enough. You are minutes from Asheville, which boasts a culture of history, beautiful food and creativity--and minutes from Warren Wilson College, which sits amidst some of the most gorgeous hiking and biking trails in Western North Carolina--Shope Creek, Kitsuma, and Tsali, to name a few. The entrance to the Blue Ridge Parkway is a minute or two down the road. It really is the best of both worlds.
The studio is a perfect size for one or two guests with a Queen bed. The loft area is storage only and the ladder is decorative only.

Guest access
Please enjoy all the grounds of Sun Bird, perhaps a little sit under the trees on your deck or in the yard.

Other things to note
When you turn onto the property, you do travel just a bit on a gravel road--please travel slow on that road...you may have to pull over to let folks pass safely. Our neighbors are very quiet but will wave and are very helpful if needed. The studio is in a quiet neighborhood, with a few houses spread out from one another, but once in awhile, you will hear occasional dog barking, which happens especially since there is potential for coyote and bear activity...I also want to mention that if you are planning to book in the winter, it is less green and verdant, but certainly the winter landscape has its charms as well!

Neighborhood highlights

The Riceville Valley is only 15 minutes from downtown Asheville. The area offers a close connection to the mountains with all the city conveniences. It's a nature lover's paradise minutes from the Blue Ridge Parkway, and incredible outdoor trails. There is wildlife here, coyotes can be heard, bunnies, and on occasion, our neighborhood mama black bear and her cubs can be spotted ...black bears are shy and based on comments from guests, who have enjoyed spotting them, take hardly a notice and keep on their way! I recognize spotting them may be alarming for some, just go in the house or your car with intention and all will be good.

Lives in Asheville, North Carolina
I love to hike with my hound-mix, Lucky...and love playing "songs you love and why?" with my music-minded husband and son. I enjoy chopping vegetables and drinking wine while watching my husband cook. I really enjoy telling folks about the Riceville Valley which we have fallen head-over-heels in love with. My life's motto is "It could be worse." Positive and slightly cynical all at once!
