"The bunkhouse" is tucked away in the foothills with easy access to Front Range city life, biking, hiking, kayaking, tubing, skiing, and Rocky Mountain National Park too. It is surrounded by spacious natural beauty, over looking the Little Thompson River, where birds, elk, coyotes, deer and bear are right at home. It has all the modern comforts, with the charm and the authenticity of the old west. We welcome people from all backgrounds.

The space
Small dogs are preferred just because the bunkhouse is small. My husband, Zeke, and I built the bunkhouse in 1993 and lived there for 3 years with our young daughters while we built the main house. Zeke designed the bunkhouse and was inspired by Australian outback cabins with wrap around porches to provide cool space all summer long. We added a skylight and wood stove to enjoy cozy winter days. We wanted it to feel old and I think we succeeded. It feels like a pioneer's cabin. The bunkhouse is located on a 100+ acre ranch with the main house directly to the west about 40 yards away. We have a very friendly Australian shepherd, named Hank the Cowdog, after the children's book character. Just tell him "git" if he is gets too friendly. Two very congenial paint horses graze freely in the pastures around the bunkhouse. Their names are Peso (black and white) and Paint (brown and white). Directly to the north is the Little Thompson River which is a modest tributary of the Big Thompson River. It sometimes dries up in mid summer, but nevertheless, attracts a lot of wildlife.

Guest access
Guests are welcome to walk or bike the roads around the property and hike the ranch property which is mostly to the north of the bunkhouse. There are private residences to the South and their privacy should be respected. Hikers should never hike alone and always wear long pants and closed-toe shoes to protect from brush and rattle snakes. Yep, that's something to look out for!! Also, remember cell phones only work close to the house!!

Other things to note
There is WiFi and cell phone service at the bunkhouse, but not much cell service between Lyons and the bunkhouse. This makes it hard to call if you get lost trying to find the place. The best advice is to try to arrive for check in during daylight hours. The directions will make much more sense if you can see!

Location

Lyons, Colorado, United States

The neighborhood is mixed rural residential and agricultural. In the mountains to the south are stone quarries where the famous Lyons red flagstone is quarried. To the west is a horse boarding operation. Those horses roam freely on the road, so please drive slowly and be careful not to hit a horse!!

During your stay
There will usually be someone in the main house on the property who can help you with problems or questions. It may not be Jani, since she travels and also works in Boulder most days. Zeke is often at home and is a very helpful friendly cowboy and jack-of-all trades.
