Our cottage offers a fully equipped kitchenette, Zen bathroom, beautifully lit skylights and a propane heater for cool Volcano nights and a private hot tub.

Guest Access

Private parking space and gate entrance. Almost 3 acres of historic gardens to explore. Don't miss the tree sanctuary at the end of the main parking lot, a room made of living trees planted 80 years ago!

Interaction with Guests

Come and go as you please. We hope you have time to meet us in the gallery or cafe but your privacy will be respected. After we close you will have the grounds to yourself and Ernest the Goat.

The Neighborhood

Very quiet village at night. Most eating places are closed by 9pm. There are 2 small stores and gas stations a hardware store, post office. Don't miss the Sunday Farmers Market from 7am till 10am at Cooper Center on Wright Road. Get there early!

Getting around

There are buses that run to Hilo and back but very limited and they DO NOT go to the airports. Rental cars are the only way to go unless you feel like hitch-hiking (not such a good idea).

Other Things to Note

Nights can be chilly here at 4000 feet, bring long sleeve sweater, socks, shoes. Go see the glowing volcano at night but dress warm, it can get windy up at the crater. Don't worry, your room has a heater and electric blanket.

  • We had a fabulous time! The cottage is adorable. Food at the cafe was delicious. Art gallery was great. They were very attentive to all of our needs, which included more delicious banana bread for breakfast the next day. They even had some chocolates waiting for us because it was our honeymoon.

  • Superb cottage beside Ira Ono's lovely art gallery and garden. The owner, Ira himself, provided many treats to make our stay even better. The perfect Volcano getaway.

  • Ira's place is just as good as photographed- maybe better. Great shower, hot tub, kitchen, and comfy bed plus very nicely/tastefully decorated interior. We enjoyed making breakfast in the mornings, then exploring Volcanoes National Park and local beaches during the day, then returning for wine, hot tub, and movie-watching, falling asleep to the rain on the roof. The grounds are beautiful, it's easy to find, the gallery and cafe are lovely, and Ira was the consummate host. Highly recommended!

  • We were so happy we could stay here at this cottage in Volcano. It was a really great location just a few minutes from the National Park Entrance and on serene grounds and with a hot tub, too. The main cottage was a little smaller than I expected, but the bathroom was larger and we liked staying here since it was cozy and convenient and it had all the things we needed and lots of nice touches to make guests comfortable. It's great that they have breakfast foods there for guests. We liked that touch, though we had also brought some food with us from the other side of the island. Ira and the people on the property were very nice and made check in and out a breeze. They were very kind and even informed us when we'd left and item and mailed it back for us. Really great service.

  • The cottage, while certainly rustic, provided a peaceful entree into our Big Island vacation. The space was clean and cozy and seemed to have everything/anything that we needed. Informative signage and notes helped us navigate use of the appliances. The mattress warmer and outdoor hot tub were nice perks!

The Vegetarian restaurant is steps away from the door and was absolutely delicious - highly recommended! Our lunch at the cafe was the best meal that we had while staying in Volcano. The cottage was walking distance from the village farmers' market (Sunday) and a great homebase for exploring the national park. We enjoyed the Kiluea Iki hike into the crater.

    We definitely recommend this rental.

  • We absolutely loved the cottage including its awesome shower, hot tub, artistic touches, location to Volcano NP, and the beautiful grounds and garden it sits among. We cooked a full dinner there the first night as we didnt want to leave and had everything we needed to prepare a meal in the compact but functional kitchen. A nice added bonus is that when the staff leave in the evening, you have the place all to yourself. We would definitely stay here again. Thanks, Ira and team!

  • We had a pleasant stay at the cottage. The living area in the cottage is very cozy for two but the private hottub makes up for this. The grounds and gardens are lovely (and include Ernest the resident goat), which become your private backyard when the Garden Arts Centre closes at 4pm. Ira is a charming and helpful host!

  • Ira’s cottage was wonderful. It is very close to the park which gives you immediate access to Pele’s volcano at night. The cottage itself was wonderful and Ira did think of everything by providing us all the amenities we could ever need. We were outfitted with a lovely breakfast in the morning – fruit, banana bread, yogurt, granola, tea, and coffee. The hot tub was lovely once the quiet cool evening arose along with the heated bed. We loved the experience. Thank you Ira!

  • Thanks Ira we enjoyed our stay at Volcano . Enjoyed the cottage, small but we got used to it. We had the best sleep so the energy was good. Thank you also for all the information which helped our tour of the National Park and beyond. Would definitely recommend and loved the great food in the café.

Aloha, I'm a full-time artist living in Hawaii for over 40 years. My inspiration comes from waking up to native birdsong in a rainforest on the mountaintop of Kilauea Volcano.
