Interaction with Guests
Come and go as you please. We hope you have time to meet us in the gallery or cafe but your privacy will be respected. After we close you will have the grounds to yourself and Ernest the Goat (in his own enclosure of course).
Very quiet village at night. Most eating places are closed by 9pm. There are 2 small stores and gas stations, a hardware/general store and post office. Don't miss the Sunday Farmers Market from 6am till 10am at Cooper Center on Wright Road. Get there early!
There are buses that run to Hilo and back but very limited and they DO NOT go to the airports. Rental cars are the only way to go unless you feel like hitch-hiking (not such a good idea).

Cabin was wonderful. Small and private. Wifi is fast. Bathroom is huge and nice. Ira was a great host. They left a few breakfast items for us on the table. Hot tub addition is wonderful. Would stay again.
We absolutely loved our stay here. The cottage was very clean, cozy and comfortable. I could tell a lot of thought was put into the many little details, from the fresh flowers, heated & very comfortable bed and pillows, plus luxury sheets, to the privacy & luxury of the delightful hot tub. Fresh fruit, granola, chocolates, coffee & tea, as well as other goodies were complimentary. The property was beautiful and the café/gift shop was an added bonus. The staff, as well as, owner well very friendly. The neighborhood was quiet & quaint. I highly recommend it!!
Excellent place to stay to explore Volcanoes National Park. Ira's suggested hike was perfect and we were able to come back to rest before visiting the lava again at night, as the park is only a few minutes away. Ira has thought of all the details. Delicious coffee, banana bread and granola. The little touches made this visit exceptional.
We really enjoyed our stay in this cozy cottage. The proximity to VNP meant we could easily hop back after a long hike to enjoy a really delicious lunch at Cafe Ono. We ate all but one of our meals there, it was that good! Since the cafe is only open 10-4pm, we had to take our dinner out and save it for later. On the upside, it meant evenings in the garden were serene and private. The hot tub was a pretty awesome perk too, by the way. We would definitely recommend staying here.
Volcano Arts Cottage is as charming at the description and photos say. Since the lush garden in which the cottage is located is closed to the public from around 4 p.m. until 9 or 10 the next morning, privacy is complete. The kitchenette has a stove top, microwave oven and under-the-counter refrigerator and there is a small propane barbecue (which we didn’t use) outside the front door. The cottage is “cozy;” as one review said, “it is comfortable for one person or an intimate pair.” Volcano is at about 3500 feet altitude and the weather in early March was cool and rainy, but the cottage’s propane heater quickly warmed the space and the electric mattress pad made the bed very welcoming. Ira was a gracious host and made us feel very welcome, including providing breakfast supplies of coffee, granola and milk for it, yogurt, fresh fruit, and a loaf of banana nut bread. We can recommend the cottage as a special place to stay when visiting the village of Volcano.
Ira was a great host, checking in when appropriate and giving us plenty of space to enjoy his beautiful grounds. His location is also an awesome launch point for all the volcano activities and some other local sites like the vineyard and coffee fields. We really appreciated getting his candid advice on which sites to see and which we can skip to move on to other things. After a long day of hiking the hot tub was exactly what we needed. Thanks a lot Ira!
Our stay felt personalised and our hosts were exceptional.
Upon our arrival (we arrived late), we were greeted with a note welcoming us to the cottage. We were also provided with fresh milk, fruit, banana bread and assorted goods for our stay/first morning's breakfast.
We found that the cottage was cosy and had a lot of character - you can tell that the owners had put a lot of time and effort into creating an ambiance not found in commercial properties.
We would recommend this place for couples seeking retreat away from the city and for couples wishing to experience the true essence of the Island of Hawaii.
About the Host, Ira
Aloha, I'm a full-time artist living in Hawaii for over 40 years. My inspiration comes from waking up to native birdsong in a rainforest on the mountaintop of Kilauea Volcano.
