Located near Congress and Riverside, just a few blocks away from longtime Austin establishments such as Guero's Taco Bar, The Continental Club, Allen's Boots, and many other amazing restaurants, shops and music venues. The South Congress bridge, where the bats emerge at sunset every evening from March to October, is just a few more blocks away and leads directly into the downtown area only a mile from our apartment, all within walking distance. You can pick up the hike and bike trail at the bridge as well, and it runs for many miles around Lady Bird Lake. Bike rentals are nearby as well.
Our apartment is perfect for the budget traveler. It's very clean and with about 500 square feet it is spacious enough for 2 guests, although there is a fold out couch if you need it. My wife and I lived here before buying the main house on the property. It was a great place to live and gave us many happy years. I'm sure you will love it too!

Not much more to add to the glowing reviews that others have left--the experience lived up to and passed those expectations. Thinking of staying here? Do it! Location fabulous to South Congress and beyond, private room in the back of the main house (complete with bamboo and fencing to make it even more private), and working with John was so easy and laid-back. Will definitely try to stay here again when in the area next.
This was the ideal place for us to stay in Austin. John's place is a very short (and very pleasant) walk from South Congress, where there are countless cool places to check out (the Hotel San Jose bar, Homeslice Pizza, Parts and Labor, so many other). Everything in the apartment was very welcoming and clean, all in all a wonderful place to stay, complemented by an ideal location.
Great location, great selection of CDs in the room and a comfy bed. The bathroom is a little tight if you are looking for something spacious. Watch out for chickens peeping through the windows.
We really enjoyed staying in John's guest house. The location was ideal for exploring the city and taking advantage of all that the South Congress neighborhood has to offer. The house was clean and nicely furnished and John made us feel welcome. If I ever visit Austin again, I'd try to stay at John's house.
John's guesthouse is a great value, and was a perfect spot to call a home base while we explored Congress Ave and all of South Austin.... It was spacious and unique. He 100% respected our privacy, and made it easy to check in, enjoy the place, and then check out with absolutely no hassles.
Great little place in a great neighborhood. It was cold the weekend we stayed but the heater kept the place warm. Comfortable bed, clean, nice host.....for the price you can't beat it. Would definitely stay again!
Cozy and well-located. High marks for cleanliness. I have no negative to report. Would certainly reserve this backhouse again- the chickens even grew less wary of this traveler.
What a great little place!! Perfect for 2 people. Within walking distance to the SoCo nightlife and daytime window shopping. The apartment was nicely decorated and the bed oh so comfy!
We loved this cottage! We were only a couple of blocks from restaurants and shops, but it felt like a quiet family neighborhood. The cottage was charming and simple, the bed comfortable, the whole place very clean. The chickens greeted us when we returned at the end of the day. Idyllic.
Wonderful experience and a very lovely space. Would highly recommend!
