Our family (2 adults/2 teenagers) spent 3 nights on the Sea Level in the Bocas Archipelago. Axel knows these islas and waters perfectly well. We enjoyed snorkeling, wildlife, exploring Cayos Zapatillas and the experience of living aboard the Sea Level. Axel is a safe and conscientious skipper. He is also an accomplished cook; his meals were delicious, fresh and healthy. Axel also took the time to discuss our preferences and do the bulk of the shopping before our arrival, allowing us more time on the water. We largely had good weather, put the sails up as conditions permitted and were allowed to pitch in as we were able. Vacationing on a live-aboard boat probably isn't for everyone, but for those that enjoy it or even want to try it for the first time, Axel, the Sea Level and the protected waters around Bocas are a winning combination.
The Sea Level is well appointed and comfortable; we had plenty of room for the five of us. Axel provided a hammock, a few deck chairs and lots of cushions for the deck and the cockpit. Our anchorages were beautiful and Axel took care to preserve the reefs and coral around us. He suggested we bring along a surfboard which gave the kids a great diving platform. He also has an inflatable for accessing marinas and shallow snorkeling spots. In the evenings we enjoyed a drink and conversation with Axel on deck and found him engaging, interesting to talk to and interested in us as his guests. A boat is the perfect way to explore the Bocas del Toro region, particularly on a first visit there, and the Sea Level with Axel was a great experience.
The reservation was canceled the day before arrival. This is an automated posting.
Staying with Axel was one of the highlights of our honeymoon in Panama. The yacht is beautiful, sailing was one of the best ways to see and experience the area around Bocas (Dolphin Bay, Isla Bastimentos, Las Zapatillas) to top all of that Axel is very warm and easy to get on with as well as being a fantastic cook! I couldn't recommend spending some days sailing with Axel more.
Unbelieveable charter boat trip with dolphins, great food, and snorkeling. Here are the high-points from 2 nights that my fiance (Jen) and I (Dave) spent with Axel on his boat.
Jen's favorites: (1) visiting dolphin bay -- dozens of dolphins, thousands of jellyfish, starfish in the reef, (2) sailing generally, and sitting on the bow in the shade of the red sail...including early morning sit when Axel delivered us coffee and eggs, (3) gourmet meals with fresh ingredients that we picked, complimented by good wine and beer.
Dave's favorites: (1) sailing to Zapatillas islands early in the morning with sun breaking through the clouds in front of us, (2) food generally, but specifically the chicken curry peanut butter lettuce wraps, and (3) snorkeling, just north of Dolphin Bay when Axel proved to me that it's cool to snorkel, even with jellyfish in the water.
Here's all the stuff other reviews said that is true: Axel is a great cook (just do the dishes), his boat is amazing (probably one of the biggest you'll see).
Here are a couple things that haven't been mentioned yet: (a) we felt safe from the time we met Axel to 'til well after he dropped us off, and (b) know how to tie a couple of sailor's knots and maybe you'll impress the skipper.
Bonus story: After our time on Axel's yacht he dropped us off at a seaside house where we had a few more nights to stay (also booked through AirBnB). There were no reviews on the other place and Axel didn't know the people who owned/operated it. I'm not sure if that's why he stayed...but he anchored just off-shore the first night of our stay. It really made us feel safe to have a friend looking out for us in a foreign, remote place.
We stayed with Axel on his boat for 2 nights, and it was a wonderful experience. Axel is a very hospitable host: he is always trying to make sure that his guests are enjoying their stay. Besides, he is a very good sailor: he took us to remote and beautiful places of the archipelago. And he is a great cook - everything was very delicious. Thinking about making your stay in Bocas more interesting and diverse? Then you should definitely go sailing with Axel. I'm sure you'll like it. We did!
I am a licensed sailboat captain and I chose to have a vacation with Axel. I was not disappointed! Axel is an excellent host. We lived on-board for three lovely days and two nights. I was excited by Axel's willingness to hoist the sails. He had the cruising spinnaker (the big red sail in the pictures) up within minutes of leaving the dock!
When we met Axel the first day he showed us around Bocas Town and helped us provision for the three day trip. You should understand that it is standard practice in the charter industry for guests to buy food for themselves and their captain for the trip. Remember - a well fed captain is a happy captain! :) Fortunately, locally provisioned food in Panama is so cheap that you won't even notice. Our entire grocery shopping bill for three people for 3 days was about $90 including beer and wine!
I should point out that Axel is an excellent cook as well! We had greek salads, warm breakfasts, coffee, steak, and even lobster bought from locals fishing in dugout canoes! The lobster cost $4 and was delicious - the best we had in all of Bocas.
The captain was excited to show us around the islands. We sailed by Dolphin Bay and anchored in Crawl Cay, Bluefield Lagoon, and the Zapatillas. We were constantly surrounded by dolphins. And, thanks to his ability to navigate through reefs into rarely accessed areas, we were able to visit remote villages with amazing views and welcoming locals. We were even invited over to a fish dinner by one local family! Indeed - these are the kind of hidden places that Western tourists rarely view. The curious children canoeing out to view our yacht was testament enough that these are areas with very little connection to the outside world. I would recommend that you bring small gifts for these children such as: pens, balls, fish hooks, candy, etc.
At the end of our trip, Axel was able to drop us off at our next resort (Al Natural) on a hard to reach stretch of beach an hour by motorboat from Bocas Town. We arrived in time for afternoon tea, as scheduled.
I highly recommend sailing with Axel - especially if you can book 3 or more days in order to really explore the area!
. . . you were able to enjoy your trip from the beginning and because you are sailors I had not much to explain about the boat and took the chance to go for a beautiful place in quite a distance . . . thank you for your good company and your generous tip . . . skipper Axel
Sailing with Axel was a unique way to see Bocas del Toro. Axel was a wonderful host and only aimed to please. He was a knowledgeable tour guide and a delicious chef. The boat was beautiful and in great condition. In just two and half days we sailed from bocas to the Zapatillas Islands, snorkeled in reefs and spotted dolphins in Dolphin Zay! If you have the time and leisure we recommend taking a trip with Axel. It was great, private way to get to know the Bocas del Toro!
