About this listing
Charming, sunny backyard garden cottage located halfway between Cooper Young and Overton Square. Queen bed, kitchenette with small appliances including refrigerator, microwave, tabletop oven, and Keurig. Quiet and private. Street parking. Sleeps two.
The cottage is a converted garage located in the backyard of the main house, which was built in 1905. The yard is fully fenced in and the garden is beautiful when in bloom.
Guests will have private access to the cottage, which is fully separate from the main house. The garden is free for you and your pets to enjoy.
Midtown is the best part of Memphis! Otherlands Coffee Shop is just across the street and Easy Way produce market is a block away.
There is a MATA bus stop at the corner which is serviced by routes 2 (which goes from the North End Terminal downtown to the airport) and 5 (North End Terminal to University of Memphis).
Other Things to Note
For weekends during May we require at least a two night stay.
I had an impression that the "culture" for AirBnB was one in which a visitor had the opportunity to experience "interesting environments AND people"...
Whilst the facilities offered were 100% professionally managed and maintained, the ambiance could easily have been that of a hotel "offering" somewhere – without the benefits of any personal contact, welcoming smile, or any service.
I would normally be happy to recommend this facility to anyone – with the caveat that if they want "P"rivacy – then they will be sure to get it in Spades. However, if they want to actually "Communicate" with their hosts for any reason – other than asking for help with something related to the facility – then forget it.
Truth to tell I was disappointed...
NOT in the facility – but rather in the way that this offering is so VERY much patently JUST a money-making "business".
Well run, efficient, complete, comfortable – with great quality accoutrements and detailing – but nevertheless the "offering" as a whole, was absolutely soul-less.
My personal understanding is that AirBnB is about SHARING between people – with all the enrichment that this offers and can bring to both parties.
... There was absolutely ZILCH of any of that here.
Then again, it would be perfect for a young honeymooning couple whose LAST desire is to be disturbed in any way...!
My feeling is that the very minimalist of personalised welcome would have made the whole experience absolutely potable and perfect.
Frankly – not "terribly impressed".
Claude, We are sorry you were so disappointed. You did contact us at the last minute (11:30 p.m.) which made communication difficult since I did not see the request until 6:45 the morning of your arrival. Glenn did call you and leave a verbal message. His phone is the only cell that has international calling--and he does not text. We are very accessible if someone needs something. We just assume when a guest is spending just one night after a long day on the road, that he or she would appreciate having some time to relax and unwind without any intrusions. This is the first time we have ever had this complaint. We do thank you, however, for leaving our cottage in perfect condition.
Loved the Midtown garden cottage. Stopped over just for the night on my drive to Dallas and it was perfect for what I needed. Paige my pup loved it as well. Located in an awesome area of town. Wish I would have had more time to explore. Grabbed a coffee at Otherlands on my way out before hitting the road.
this place was perfect and exactly what we were looking for! very close to everything and very comfortable. the hosts were excellent and everything was exactly as described. would definitely rent again if I ever go back to Memphis!
We had a great stay at the Garden Cottage. While we didn't personally meet Martha, Glen, and Vanessa, they made sure our arrival and guest experience were well taken care of. The cottage is clean, quiet, and very comfortable, not to mention surrounded by a beautiful garden. We had a great stay and would highly recommend the garden cottage to others.
We had a fantastic time in the cottage celebrating our wedding! We did not get to participate with our hosts but they were great at communicating with us and ok with us having a couple of guests for a few hours. A great place to stay!!
This was a great little place to stay. Easy driving distance to downtown where there is lots of reasonably priced parking. We also used Uber which was very cheap and efficient. The garden flat was very well equipped and very comfortable. Best thing about it though was the coffee shop literally 1 minute away called Otherlands. Had breakfast there every morning before setting out. Very casual laidback atmosphere. Would definitely recommend this to anyone for a visit to Memphis.
The Midtown Garden Cottage is super cute and in a great location. It is only two blocks away from a coffee shop, and it is walking distance to a delicious vegan restaurant. It is also a quick Uber ride to downtown and all the museums in Memphis. It is very clean, and I loved the shower! Just to note…the cottage is fairly close to the airport and planes fly over, so if you are a light sleeper, just keep that in mind. Martha was very accommodating to our check-in time, which was greatly appreciated.
About the Host, Martha, Glenn, And Vanessa
We are an older couple who also own a neighborhood cafe/bistrot in Midtown Memphis. Martha is a retired school teacher and Glenn is a retired track coach. We are francophiles who have traveled extensively in France. French cuisine has been our long time passion. Our daughter, Vanessa, works at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. She speaks German and is an accomplished knitter. The cottage is located in Vanessa's back yard which is a wild flower garden.
