Charming, sunny backyard garden cottage located halfway between Cooper Young and Overton Square. Queen bed, kitchenette with small appliances including refrigerator, microwave, tabletop oven, and Keurig. Quiet and private. Street parking. Sleeps two.
The cottage is a converted garage located in the backyard of the main house, which was built in 1905. The yard is fully fenced in and the garden is beautiful when in bloom.
Guests will have private access to the cottage, which is fully separate from the main house. The garden is free for you and your pets to enjoy.
Midtown is the best part of Memphis! Otherlands Coffee Shop is just across the street and Easy Way produce market is a block away.
There is a MATA bus stop at the corner which is serviced by routes 2 (which goes from the North End Terminal downtown to the airport) and 5 (North End Terminal to University of Memphis).
Other Things to Note
For weekends during May we require at least a two night stay.
We stayed at the garden cottage on a cold winter night where the temperature dropped to 13 degrees outside. The hosts contacted us ahead of time to warn us about the temperatures and note that it might get a little chilly in the cottage. It was actually quite comfortable inside with an additional space heater, provided by the hosts.
The cottage itself is very nice, and it seemed a little more spacious than it appears in the photos. We only stayed one night and did not get to see much of Memphis, so I can't really comment on the location, but the neighborhood seemed nice and we were able to find a great restaurant for dinner just a few blocks away. The instructions for finding and entering the cottage were great.
Great stay. The cottage is the perfect size for a single or couple. The neighborhood seems very safe and is a close drive to all the hot spots. Make sure to check out the sweet coffee shop just down the street. Make sure to take quick showers because the hot water runs out very quickly (though it was 20 degrees while we were there so that may have seriously contributed to the problem).
Charming place and pleasant stay. I only stayed one night but the place was outfitted for a longer stay. Lots of attention to detail. Enjoyed the selection of coffee for the Kuerig brewer. would love to stay again when everything is blooming in the garden.
Great stay in the Garden Cottage! Thanks so much Martha, Glenn and Vanessa for making our first trip to Austin wonderful!
The guest house was warm when we arrived and we appreciated that. Nice to have coffee and tea available, also.
I had a lovely 5 day stay in this cottage and could not have been happier about my choice. Pre-arrival I received clear and informative emails that addressed checking into the cottage and about activities in the city. Martha communicated when a potential issue arose with the heater and offered me many generous alternatives, but they were unnecessary as the cottage was so comfortable.
Inside, it was much more spacious than I had expected, impeccably clean and had a ton of natural light. A binder of city information and fliers was a great touch, and the kitchenette was really functional. There was an egg poacher and a mini stone-wave microwave cooker, a quality countertop oven, decently-sized mini fridge, electric kettle and Kurig. With a produce store next door and a grocery less than a mile away I found great use of all these, as well as the abundant and excellent food options within walking distance. While I could hear the train occasionally, I didn't find it bothersome and the neighborhood was otherwise very quiet. I can see how the garden would be lovely the right time of year, and it was still maintained even in winter.
The cottage was better than my expectations and I was really pleased that I opted out of more expensive and similarly-priced hotels. As I was there to consider living in Memphis, the fully-furnished place with a homey feel helped me imagine what it would be like, and the cleanliness and ambiance of the cottage was far superior.
The location was excellent and central to many things even without a car. A mile north has a ton of great restaurants and entertainment (especially theatre), grocery and chain stores, and is near a large park and zoo. Half a mile south is more food, bars, community centers and shopping, and down the street is a Central BBQ, a local favorite.
I can't recommend this cottage or my wonderful host contact Martha enough. If I were to visit Memphis again I will be seeking them out!
The cottage was great, warm and cozy and close to a lot of neat stuff. It was a great little place to stay for a few days.
