The Neighborhood

*** Special Attraction Spring Baseball training Camps
The St. Pete/Clearwater area has a 90-plus-year history of Spring Training. The area features the Philadelphia Phillies in Clearwater, the Toronto Blue Jays in Dunedin and the New York Yankees in nearby Tampa. There are also 9 other teams within a two-hour drive. Here in St. Pete/Clearwater, well, there are no worries when it comes to the weather, no matter the season. But Spring Training still provides a rare treat for the area's three big-league teams to practice in the beautiful and warm outdoors. The cozy stadiums and relaxed atmosphere help deliver the game in all its casual elegance.

*** Special Attraction coming Nov. 8th until Feb. 16th.....Picasso at The Dali Museum in St. Petersburg will feature rarely-loaned works of art by Picasso and Dalí, and will appear exclusively in only two museums worldwide- St. Petersburg's Dalí Museum and Barcelona's Museum Picasso.
It gives visitors a chance to view masterpieces created by "arguably the two most influential 20th century Spanish artists," This mixture of paintings, drawings, prints and sculpture will be on display next year, before the exhibition makes it's way to Barcelona for the second and final event in March.

I have only lived in Gulfport a little over a year, and I love it. There are wonderful things of interest to do here, besides relaxing on the beaches, good food and enjoying the sun. Everyone says good morning, or just gives a "hello." This place is like stepping back into Mayberry USA. Get this, the little ( full service,) post office is in an antique collective right next to "Stellas" my favorite place to eat breakfast outside. This is a pet friendly place, so you will see people walking their dogs all over the place.
Gulfport is in close proximity to other areas of interest up and down the cost. Explore towns and beaches with great places to eat and experience the history of Florida. Besides the big name museums, there are many smaller ones, showing the works of particular artists or are the showing place to what had been private collections.
But Gulfport is unique in it's flavor. It is a very laid back and easy place to relax and yet enjoy and array of our restaurant and night life culture.
In the morning, or any time of day, take a walk on the pier, sometimes the fishermen will talk to you, but you can just sit and look out over the water towards distant Treasure Island. I prefer watching the morning mist rise, but the evening sunset is just as lovely; afterwards you can stroll over to one of the many outdoor restaurants, there is always a festive atmosphere at night but the mornings are fresh air clean and calm. If you walk towards the Marina and the Clam Bayou, you will find yourself on nature trails where you can experience the wonderful birds that migrate here.
If you are a biker, come ride the Pinellas Bike Trail, which takes you on established bike trails through preserved nature parks and neighborhoods of Pinellas County. There are bikes for your use on the premises.

Getting around

The bus stop is not even a 1/4 block away, either coming or going, on 28th ave., which the main house faces, not the guest suite. There are buses that will take you through the town, and another that takes you out to the mall or into St. Petersburg.
I can take you food shopping if you do not have a car.

Other Things to Note

If you are coming in late, and would like me to stock any food or sundries for you, please let me know. Orange juice, coffee and tea, sugar, honey and milk (let me know what you like to drink) are on the premises.
Guest soap, shampoo, cream rinse and toothpaste, even an emergency tooth brush packet are in the room for your use.

  • I spent the weekend in the Clay Cottage with my boyfriend and best friend who flew in from the wintery north. It was a the perfect amount of space for us and probably could comfortably fit a couple more. It is a very serene environment. My boyfriend spent most of his time studying in the peacefulness of the cottage while my friend and I walked to the beach, bars and restaurants that are just a couple blocks away. We also went to the Grand Prix in downtown St. Pete which is only 10 minutes away. Gulfport is such a cozy little beach community nestled in a larger culturally active area.
Susan was a wonderful host. She keeps a lovely home that smells of fresh linens. She's also a great resource for info on the art community and local restaurants. I'll definitely be back soon for a mother-daughter weekend.

  • We have spent four nights at Susan's place and it was great. The place is private-entrance room with private bathroom and kitchen. It was quite large, very comfortable and clean. Susan has been a great host, she has provided all the essentials, and gave some suggestions on restaurants, museums, etc. The place is located in Gulfport, which is very near to St Petersburg downtown and beaches (St Pete beach, Treasure island, etc) by car. Gulfport is nice, relaxing and pleasant, we spent some of our time in Gulfport. We were really pleased with Susan's hospitality and location of the house.

  • I can't say enough good about my two week stay at Susan's place in Gulfport, it was truly a perfect experience. Her description of her accommodations are 100% accurate. Her place is absolutely lovely and spacious with all the necessities one would require. I felt as if I was staying in a European villa! Beautiful linens, plants, and art objects adorn this one room light-filled apartment.
Susan is a gracious host who knows a lot about the town of Gulfport. She's also a wonderfully kind person and a talented artist! As an artist myself I was looking for a place to work that would accommodate both the privacy I needed and some extra support re: access to a more industrial sink and a place to draw. Upon finding out I was an artist Susan immediately offered me a drawing table to use in the apartment and allowed me to use her yard to develop sun prints! I also appreciated how quiet the neighborhood was. Walking to downtown Gulfport from her place was enjoyable and she was quick to lend her bike when she wasn't using it. I highly recommend Susan's Gulfport accommodations, it's a five-star treasure!

  • The artistic Clay Cottage guest suite was a perfect way to enjoy our recent dance weekend at the Gulfport Casino! Everything in the suite was clean, fresh and appealing! Plenty of sunlight fills the space and the "treehouse" feeling was terrific. The street is quiet but convenient and easy walking to the downtown area.

The Clay Cottage bed was comfortable and well-appointed with lovely sheets and down comforters, the towels were lovely and plentiful. The added inflatable bed was high quality and our host was savvy enough to put a blanket on the sleeping surface so it was cozy and warm with no loss of heat from below - a nice touch! Susan made sure we were well taken care of in all ways, including adding space heaters for the unexpected cold and a welcome perk of fresh yogurt and juice in the frig.

Susan was a perfect host, seeing to our needs and offering us help. Wish we could have had more time just to visit her.... possibly on another trip.

Overall excellent experience and we can highly recommend the Clay Cottage.

  • Susan is a terrific host- very accommodating and generous. She really went out of her way to make sure we were comfortable and that we enjoyed our visit in St Petersburg. We would definitely rent from Susan again. Kevin and Claude
