About this listing

Retreat to the sanctuary of this beautiful restored cottage at the geographic and cultural heart of Marin County. Set on a seasonal creek, with a sunny deck and lots of privacy. Closest neighbors are the goats and chickens.

The space

Retreat to the sanctuary of the Nicasio Creek Cottage, a beautiful historical getaway at the geographic and cultural heart of Marin County.

With the constant stress of daily living, most of us need regular contact with nature to switch off, unwind and reflect. Just 45 minutes from downtown San Francisco, 20 minutes to Point Reyes National Seashore, 30 minutes to the Sonoma Wine Country and just up the road from the Lucas Film's creative epicenter, Skywalker Ranch, a stay in this newly remodeled cottage - once the deer camp for the local ranch - has you perfectly situated to enjoy all that the area has to offer.

Whether its just a short weekend refresh or a peaceful extended stay amongst the beautiful natural surrounds, you will come away inspired and revitalized! Enjoy the serene country setting by day and dance the night away to live music at the celebrated Rancho Nicasio. Or pick up some delicious locally made cheese at the Nicasio Valley Cheese Company, California's only certified organic farmstead cheesemaker, and enjoy it on the sunny, creek-side deck with a glass of wine. If you are more the active type, this is a paradise for cyclists, hikers, bikers and naturalists of all sorts. Hike the hills around the property or bring your road bikes and enjoy one of the many famed rides that begin at the cottage's private gate.

The cottage has a private automated gate entrance (owners live at the other end of the property), large deck overlooking a seasonal creek and waterfall, full kitchen, small bedroom with queen size bed and cozy living room that opens up onto the deck. From the pictures the unit looks bigger than it is thanks to the wide angle lens. For reference, it is about 480 square feet in total, perfect for a couple but not appropriate for groups, people needing to set up a crib (no room!) or friends that need separate beds, etc. Coffee and fresh eggs are stocked in the fridge upon arrival. There is limited wireless internet available.

There are chickens, goats, sheep at certain times of the year, cats, and dogs on the property so for their safety and comfort there are absolutely NO visiting pets permitted. Even the very sweet and well behaved visiting cats and dogs are disruptive to the animals that live here so please don't ask! Sorry, NO exceptions.

There is also an abundance of wildlife that share this property so be aware that you could see and/or encounter deer, fox, bobcat, raccoon, snakes, bats, ticks, yellow jackets and many other types of creatures at various times of the year depending on when you visit.

Guest access

The cottage and its large deck are yours and yours alone during your stay.

Interaction with guests

We live at the other end of the multi-acre property so we are just a phone call, text or email away.

Other things to note

The Nicasio Creek Cottage is conveniently located on Lucas Valley Rd which is the primary route out to West Marin. That means its easy to get to! It also means that the road (especially on beautiful weekend days) gets lots of use by cars, bicyclists and motorcycles so expect road noise during day time hours.

Holly is a wonderful host who has appointed this contemporary and retrofitted cottage with very thoughtful touches. The bed was very comfy, the kitchen had more than the basic necessities, including a bowlful of eggs from the hens just a walk away from the unit. Watching the two goats meander around the fenced in field was relaxing in and of itself, the deck facing the creek invited us to sit a spell and watercolor, and the hammock even closer to the creek was a daily temptation. The location is fairly central a number of spots of interest, including Point Reyes Station. As others have noted, the sound of light traffic can be heard in the morning but really not an issue. Holly is very respectful of privacy and has set up the entry to the property as very self-sufficient with a light touch of checking in during our 3-night stay. She was also very thoughtful and communicative towards resolving a minor issue during our stay. We look forward to a return trip to enjoy the lovely quiet, bucolic setting, and gentle refuge. Highly recommended! Thanks, Holly!

After reading all the glowing previous reviews I thought, "how could this possibly be so perfect?" Well, it is. We had a delightful weekend at Holly's and I would recommend it for pretty much anyone! The place isn't massive but there's plenty of space (I think I paid 3 times as much for a smaller flat in Brooklyn). We could have watched the little goats from the deck all day. As previous reviewers have mentioned, it's just off the main road so there is a bit of road noise. But it's not bad at night, and that also also means it's very accessible and easy to get anywhere! We could easily have stayed a week and I'm sure we'll be back.

Holly is a fantastic host and her property is exactly as described. It is comfortable, modern, and charmingly rustic, just as you want a cabin in the woods to be. It was my second time visiting, and this time was surprised by the sounds of a beatiful waterfall and creek right in my backyard. Supremely relaxing stay, will be returning. And the location is perfect for an outdoors getaway, as many hiking trails are nearby. Kitchen is fully stocked for easy cooking, and the bed is very comfortable. Thanks for an awesome visit!

Great space, tranquil and beautiful. Very near hiking and exploring the area. Comfortable bed and easy to get in/out. It is near the road but it never bothered me. The nature is gorgeous and the animals were friendly, including their owners ;-)

Our family is thrilled to be able to share our little piece of paradise!  On five acres along Nicasio Creek sits this lovely cottage which was, at one time, the deer hunting cabin for the local cattle ranch.  Now renovated to be bright, airy and relaxing its the ideal place for a little R&R.

Enjoy the view of the beautiful forested creek side setting and keep an eye out for the wildlife that also call this home including deer, quail, foxes, hawks, bobcats and much more.  Or, if dometic animals are more your thing say hi to the Pygmy Goats right out your door and enjoy the freshly layed organic eggs provided to guests by the hens in the Chateu du Poulet.

Offering plenty of privacy while not being too isolated the Cottage is a convenient jumping off point for exploring the North Bay.  We look forward to hosting you!
