Kealakekua Bay (Pathway to the Gods) is located on the Kona Coast, 12 miles South of Kailua-Kona and is only a short walk from your cottage. If your are fortunate enough, you may have the opportunity to swim with turtles, mantas, spotted eagle rays and enjoy world class snorkeling with beautiful coral reef and an array of colorful tropical fish in an awesome under water protected marine sanctuary. Kealakekua Bay and Captain Cook monument are seen across the bay from Manini Beach where spinner dolphins frequent. This is also the historic bay where Captain Cook first landed in Hawaii in 1778 and the famous site of his Monument.

Historic Napoopoo Beach Park and Ke’ei Beach (good for surfing) are only minutes away. The federal park Pu'uhonua O Honaunau, The City of Refuge, is a short drive to the south. There you will find a popular snorkeling spot named “Two Step” which is an easy access area for snorkeling or scuba diving. This area also has a public boat launch and a sand beach for the small children to swim in shallow waters. Another 10-minute drive will take you to Ho’okena Beach which is a black sand beach with great views, public facilities, camping, rental equipment and perfect for a picnic.

The sound of the ocean waves will enchant you. Visiting during the months of November through March is an excellent time for watching humpback whales breech from your lanai. On occasion, you can hear their singing and tail slapping. The Hawaiian spinner dolphins frequent the bay all year and can be seen jumping and “spinning” in the pristine blue waters.

Paradise awaits you!

Helpful hosts make this place very enjoyable. Outdoor kitchen facing the pounding Pacific surf make it unique. Wonderful bicycling routes from here for the fit rider, and some level road for cruising. Good snorkeling near by. Suggest shopping at KTA, and at least once get poke take out at Sundried Specialties for a healthy and delicious local Hawaiian dinner. This is not a pristine and private hideaway. The neighbors' music and dogs will occasionally become noticeable. However, the net experience was delightful.

What a dream! All the you can ask for just steps away from the gorgeous bay where we saw dolphins, mantas and what not! Loved staying with Rusty and Janice in their lovely and well equipped cottage. Cooking outdoors add such a fun experience! And they even had a portable crib for our 3 years old son. Would love to come back next time we're on the Big Island for truly unforgettable vacation! Don't hesitate any more and just book it is it is available!

Rusty & Janice were the perfect hosts. They made sure we were comfotable and had everything we needed, they told us the best kayak, snorkel and beach spots in the area and even invited us to stop in during their local ukulele group meet. They were the perfect balance of being helpful and respecting our privacy. The cottage was clean, bed was comfortable, and description was spot on. The view of the ocean from the outdoor kitchen & living area was fantastic. The ocean is right in front of the two cottages but it is a kayak snorkling entrance, not a beach. You are able to hear and see the ocean from the cottage. This location is for those seeking to get away. It is remote and therefore, not ideal for those looking to shop, go out to eat, visit other parts of the island on a daily basis. It is perfect if you want to experience an outdoor living lifestyle of the Big Island and we so enjoyed ourselves.

Despite an emergency repair as we arrived too early, our hosts treated us like gold and gave us the keys to this treasure. We shoot ourselves in the foot by revealing the truth about our superlative experience. They deserve to book up.

This place was amazing! If you like a real Hawaiian experience and want to be among the locals, look no further, book this place!!!! Rusty and Janice were great and the place was better then the photos. You are a two minute walk to a beautiful bay and park, where you can snorkel, swim or rent a kayak. Our daughter swam with over a dozen dolphins, including babies, all steps away! Rusty and Janice even invited us over to their weekly ukulele jam, where several of the locals gather to play, our daughter got to play and sing, a true Island experience. The beds, linens and pillows were wonderful . The outdoor kitchen was fully stocked with everything you need to cook in. The outdoor shower was fantastic and none of us even used the indoor one. We also loved the area, lots nearby but not as congested as Kona. A beautiful national park and a bee museum and store minutes away. A big mahalo to Rusty and Janice for providing an amazing and unforgettable place!!!!!!

The cottage was exactly what we expected. It is cozy, has an amazing view, and a fantastic outdoor kitchen, shower, and living space. The BBQ made cooking easy and we were able to enjoy the sunset over a wonderful meal every night. Rusty and Janice were warm, welcoming, and there to answer any/all questions if needed. The cottage is in a perfect location; you can rent a kayak 1 minute from your home, or you can walk 2 minutes to a small beach/park for a picnic and snorkel adventure. Rusty and Janice provided all the snorkel equipment, beach chairs, and coolers for the entire stay. Rusty and Janice would have as much or little interaction as you want, however, they have a lot to share and we enjoyed speaking with them.
