Our city of Escazu lies at an elevation of 1,101 meters above sea level on the northeast slopes of the Cerros de Escazú, 9 kilometers west of the national capital city of San José. The climate is moist tropical: it is not unknown for Escazú to experience rainfall on a day in which San José is dry and sunny. January and February are frequently windy.

Over the past couple of decades Escazú has become an expatriate enclave: several embassies have their residences located here, including the residence of the US Ambassador and the British Ambassador. The past few years have seen a significant influx of newly arrived foreigners from North America, South America and Europe. It is home to many bars and restaurants, especially those of the more chic variety. Rents and prices reflect this and Escazú is the most well-known upscale location in Costa Rica. Here, one can find English movie theaters and even a luxurious golf and country clubs. There are also many fine restaurants and dining areas in this part of town, with an excellent nightlife. Banks, pharmacies shops, grocery stores including Fresh Market and even an 18-hole championship golf course can be found here, along with one of the biggest and most modern shopping malls in Central America, Multiplaza.

Escazú is one of the wealthiest places in Costa Rica, with many great restaurants and shops, and has some of the most exclusive shopping and dining in the country. It has new developments, like Avenida Escazu, which holds the country's first IMAX theater. Avenida Escazu is a modern outdoor mall/center. This mall has many international brands like Max Mara, Women's Secret, Cortefiel, and Adolfo Dominguez, and the country's first Starbucks. Another unique feature of Escazu is it holds the most luxurious mall in Costa Rica, Multiplaza Escazu, which is home to many big international brand names like Zara, Armani Exchange, MNG, Guess, Lacoste, Tiffany and Co., Carolina Herrera, Salvatore Ferragamo, among others. Many locations in the city are prized for their scenic outlooks. This zone is one of the most developed parts in the metropolitan area.

Escazu is the premier location in the Central Valley with easy access to innumerous activities:

Central Market, National Theatre, El Pueblo night life, Bird Zoo, National Parks, Coffee-Tour, Art-Tour, River-Rafting, Hiking, Volcanoes, Canopy-Teleferic, Horseback riding, Tropical Bungee jumping, the vast San Jose cultural life.

Some of my favorite Restaurants:

Pescatore

Banzai Sushi Asian Cuisine

Situated on a hillside overlooking the San José metropolitan area in Costa Rica, Le Monastère represents a combination of quiet reflection and full-blown festivity, expertly mixed to please all facets of the dining and nightlife spectrum.

The restaurant boasts an eclectic history. Originally the home and chapel of an elite family in the early 1900's, the buildings were later converted into a monastery for religious novitiates (of an unknown denomination). Today, the site hosts one of Central America's best restaurants.

Tiquicia

And one of my favorite attractions:

La Paz Waterfall Gardens:

La Paz Waterfall Gardens es la atracción ecológica privada #1 más visitada de Costa Rica que le ofrece los mejores senderos cerca de San José, las más famosas cataratas en Costa Rica, incluida la famosa Catarata de La Paz, un centro de rescate y reserva privada de vida silvestre con más de 100 especies de animales y programas de educación ambiental.

We really look forward to welcoming you to Costa Rica.

We are happy to make recommendations for any of your travel needs during breakfast. My daughter or I may be available at many times during the day to help with any queries you may have. We are often able to provide private transportation to tourist areas, clinics or malls, etc.

Getting around

My name: Anabelle Solis
My residence telephone number: (phone number hidden)
My cellular telephone number. (phone number hidden)
House Address: Guahipelin de Escazu, 50 meters west of the PAVICEN bus stop. The house is light green in color, the iron gate is red in color and there are red roof tiles on top of the gate. The steep driveway entrance is made of concrete. The buzzer to ring the house is located on the right side of the gate behind the plant.

Copy these directions in Spanish to give to the taxi drivers as they will understand very well how to arrive directly to my place.

The public bus to go from here to San Jose is conveniently located just 50metres from the house. The bus is labelled: Escazu, Guaçhipelin, PAVICEN. Just to clarify, Escazu is the city, Guachipelin is the street and PAVICEN is the name of the bus stop. The color of the bus is not a guide. Check the front window of the bus for the correct route information. If you get down in San Jose at the Coca Cola bus stop, memorize the exact place for example look what is in front of you when you get off the bus.
Of course be cautious of your wallet, camera and telephone. Do not make them visible to anyone.

The bus is much less expensive than taxi or car but you will need to allow additional time for the bus.

  • Anabelle's is a wonderful place to stay. I arrived with a 14 year old grand nephew in tow, his first trip out of the US, and he was both welcomed and included in the conversations. Breakfast is "typico" Costa Rican food and delicious. It is served with fresh juice, good coffee and lots of fresh fruit.

The room and bathroom were comfortable, very clean and had everything we needed. The house is gorgeous and the garden is stunning. I wish I had had more time to read and relax in the garden.

Anabelle and her lovely daughters speak excellent English and are interesting and attentive.

If you are planning to have some dental work done, Anabelle's is ideally located near many of the most popular clinics in the quiet upscale suburb of Escazu, about 20 minutes from both the airport and downtown San Jose.

My visit was a lovely experience and I plan to return next year. I highly recommend Anabelle.

  • Anabelle’s was a lovely haven to retreat to from the hustle and bustle of San Jose. I loved to sit in the back yard and watch the hummingbirds fly. Her home was beautiful and comfy, breakfast (fruit, rice, beans, cheese/egg) was a real treat and gave me a great start to the day. In retrospect I would have probably stayed longer and explored more of the local area, perhaps another time. Anabelle gave great directions and enabled me (with very limited Spanish) to navigate the bus systems successfully. It was such a good base to start my travels and I enjoyed talking about all the travel options and dreams with her. Best wishes to you and your family Anabelle!

Thank you very much Shan, I`d love to know how was the rest of the trip, (by e-mai)

  • I liked my stay with Annabelle and her two daughters. The place was perfect for me to unwind from my visit to Costa Rica and recover from my dental visit. the room exceeded my expectations and truly enjoyed my stay. I had to cut my visit short as I had a early flight home the next morning so I stayed at a hotel at the airport the night before. If you take a bus make sure that you get on the right one as the bus from the coco cola station has three different routs
And only one goes to the house and it stops running at 8:00 PM and will not go all the way to the house even earlier and will stop around a 1/2mile short and you will have to walk the rest of the way.

  • I stayed two weeks in Anabella's house which I call it “home” now. Anabella and her family are kind and educated native Costarican who well traveled and speak fluent English. The house is spic-and-span clean and the Garden, my favorite spot in the house is very pleasant to the eyes as there are maid and gardener present most days of the week. This is a full service B&B with complete and nutritious breakfast and dinner or as little interaction as you like. Location is very convenient and close to everything. If you are driving set your odometer to zero soon as you exit the rout 27 (Autopista) and driving on Guachipelin in 1.7 miles or 2.7 kilometers you will be in front of Anabella's house with red gate and beautiful red roses covered entire front of the house. You can't miss it!

  • When we arrived at the house of Anabelle, it was like we arrived in a little paradise. This was because of the beautiful garden with all kind of exotic plants, but also a dream of a house and bedroom. But the most important thing we remember is the very hospitable Annabelle . We had very interesting talkings and we felt as like at home. We are glad we spent half of our time in Costa Rica in Annabelle's. House

  • My husband and I had the most wonderful stay and in fact the week we spent there was indeed the highlight of our month's visit to CR. Annabelle is such a sensitive host sincerely wishing to accommodate her guests in any way possible and make sure their time in CR is the best. They felt like family (good family) right from the start.

Between Annabelle and her absolutely delightful daughter, they are able to converse bilingually in English and easily make themselves understood in Italian, French and Portuguese as well.

Annabelle has 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms (3 with showers and 1 with a really comfortable corner jacuzzi with a powerful French shower jet spray). We had the room with the jacuzzi and it was a delight to relax in. The comfortable bedroom was ideal to awake to the sound of birds. We saw more varieties of birds in her backyard than we did at Manuel Antonio park! She serves breakfast in her garden where her artistic landscaping can be appreciated.

Breakfast is prepared with love; from the fresh-squeezed fruit juices, freshly cut traditional Costa Rican fruits, eggs, toast, her tasty Gallo pinto recipe, and coffee.

Annabelle is very helpful to arrange or suggest any tourist attractions in her area. She works with Patricia, a most engaging and accommodating tour guide/driver to take you wherever you like including medical appointments. We preferred to have Patricia drive us around than to use taxis. Annabelle recommended the best dinner venues with extraordinary menus and decor and traditional CR live folk performances.

Annabelle allows her guests free reign of the house so we always felt entirely at home and most welcome.

We would most certainly return to Annabelle's place - we hardly wanted to leave.
