About this listing
Ideally located along the Wild Atlantic Way, and within easy reach of Sliabh Liag (Europe's highest sea cliffs), Lough Anna Cottage is available to let either as an entire house or a single private room (hosted by the owner).
Situated 2km from Glenties, which is east of Ardara and north of Donegal town, this traditional stone-built cottage is about 200 years old. It is in good condition with reasonably spacious and comfortable rooms. It has one medium sized bedroom with a double bed and one bedroom with two bunk beds, a kitchen, a bathroom and a living room with a working fireplace. There is the possibility of an additional bed which can be made up in the room with the bunk beds.
The cottage is fully furnished and the kitchen has a large and good quality gas/electric cooker, table, chairs etc. There is also a washing machine, but no television and no tumble dryer. Washing is generally dried on the line outside or on an inside dryer rack in bad weather. Both wood and turf are supplied for use in the living room fire place. The house also has a good oil-fired central heating system. All household linen and cleaning is included in the price. It is set in about an acre and a half of woodland and meadows with its own private drive and parking space. There are two friendly cats, who live both inside and out. If people prefer, they can remain outside for the entire duration of their stay.
Please note : a full Irish or light continental breakfast is included in the price for two or three people sharing a room. After this, any groups of four or five people will effectively be occupying the entire cottage and must be self-catering. The entire cottage is also available for two or three people seeking complete privacy or extra space, but the balance of the rate for the entire cottage must be paid on arrival. This is the difference between the sum paid to airbnb and €90 for one night or €80 per night for two or more nights.
For both options, an evening meal can be provided on arrival by request - €12 -€15 per person.
Guests have access to all areas of the house and garden.
Interaction with Guests
I live in a secluded and private location with complete tranquility, yet am surrounded by very caring and helpful neighbours. This sort of sums up Donegal : peace where you want it and help when needed. Add to this the stunning coast line and mountains, walking opportunities and great wealth of traditional music, the pubs and their people and you have a place I call home. - a little slice of heaven.
Public transport in the immediate area is a little limited. Buses from Dublin and Dublin airport are very regular, but most go as far as Donegal Town which is 35km from Glenties. I occasionally give lifts to people who have come without a car, but most come here by car.
Smokers welcome as long as they refrain from smoking indoors. House should be left reasonably clean and tidy, given that there is no cleaning charge.
Please be aware that there are two resident cats.
It was a most warm and lovely welcome that Allaye gave us on the arriving.
The place was just perfect for us - out in the green with a perfect equipped house. We just loved it.
She suggested some trips in the area that we visited then - it was gorgeous !
Thanks a lot - a great experience
We had a warm welcome and enjoyed the home baked bread. We loved the open fireplace and also the kids especially like having the cats around. The house has a lot of character. It is a good base for exploring Donegal.
The newly renovated shed into a tiny self contained cottage was a delight. We enjoyed sleeping up in the loft with a large glass window, with views of the green meadow. Allaye and Dave were very warm and welcoming. It was a real pleasure to get to know them. It was wonderful also to listen to them play music later in the bar. We loved Donegal as our stay was made so special by them.
When we arrived at Lough Anna cottage (after following excellent directions!), we were greeted warmly by Allaye and her partner Davey. The warmth continued as we were shown the cottage, the wood and turf fire, the amenities, our rooms, and the newly renovated cow shed which was going to house other visitors the next evening. The cottage was cozy and thoroughly charming. Fresh baked wheaten bread and scones were waiting for us, made by Allaye. At first, the teenagers with us were dismayed by the lack of WiFi, but after two nights of disconnection from the outside world, they admitted they really liked the place. Allaye made a great recommendation for dinner in a nearby town (Nancy's), and offered to show us south Donegal … an offer we unfortunately couldn't follow up on. The hike up the mountain to Lough Anna was amazing, as was the nearby Narin beach. Karyne and I would have loved to spend a few more days there, exploring, getting to know our hosts, reading some of the countless books in the cottage, and really relaxing. Thank you Allaye for a wonderful couple of days.
Allaye was wonderful and so welcoming! Her home is tucked away in a beautiful part of Ireland that we were so lucky to visit. She is lovingly restoring the house and her personal style and attention to detail is apparent everywhere, including the delicious irish breakfast. My husband and I had a great meal in a nearby town thanks to her suggestion, and spent a very restful night in the country quiet.
