About this listing

A traditional, 200 year old cottage with some modern comforts and many original features. Located on a quiet back road, the cottage is set in private land with a sweeping meadow at the front and many mature trees to all sides. It is about 6 minutes drive from the nearest town (Glenties) and suits those looking for complete tranquility. Good shops, pubs, places to eat in Glenties and nearby Ardara. Stunning mountain and coastal scenery in every direction.

Extra people: $17 / night after the first guest
Cleaning Fee: $28

The space

Ideally located along the Wild Atlantic Way, and within easy reach of Sliabh Liag (Europe's highest sea cliffs), Lough Anna Cottage is available to let either as an entire house or a single private room (hosted by the owner). Please read to the end of this description for rates.

Situated 2km from Glenties, which is east of Ardara and north of Donegal town, this traditional stone-built cottage is about 200 years old. It is in good condition with reasonably spacious and comfortable rooms. It has one medium sized bedroom with a double bed and one bedroom with two bunk beds, a kitchen, a bathroom and a living room with a working fireplace. There is the possibility of an additional bed which can be made up in the room with the bunk beds.

The cottage is fully furnished and the kitchen has a large and good quality gas/electric cooker, table, chairs etc. There is also a washing machine, but no television and no tumble dryer. Washing is generally dried on the line outside or on an inside dryer rack in bad weather. Both wood and turf are supplied for use in the living room fire place. The house also has a good oil-fired central heating system. All household linen and cleaning is included in the price. It is set in about an acre and a half of woodland and meadows with its own private drive and parking space. There are two friendly cats, who live both inside and out. If people prefer, they can remain outside for the entire duration of their stay.

Please note : a full Irish or light continental breakfast is included in the price for two or three people sharing a room. After this, any groups wishing to rent the entire cottage must be self-catering. The cottage is therefore available for between one and five people seeking complete privacy or extra space, but B&B guests qualify for reduced rates: €45 single person, €60 two people, €80 three people. Please state which you prefer. Single night occupancy of the entire cottage is possible but a higher rate is charged: €100.

For both options, an evening meal can be provided on arrival by request - €12 -€15 per person.

The neighborhood

I live in a secluded and private location with complete tranquility, yet am surrounded by very caring and helpful neighbours. This sort of sums up Donegal : peace where you want it and help when needed. Add to this the stunning coast line and mountains, walking opportunities and great wealth of traditional music, the pubs and their people and you have a place I call home. - a little slice of heaven.

Getting around

Public transport in the immediate area is a little limited. Buses from Dublin and Dublin airport are very regular, but most go as far as Donegal Town which is 35km from Glenties. I occasionally give lifts to people who have come without a car, but most come here by car.

Other things to note

Please read the house description - all the way through - and make sure that this is what you are looking for. I recently had a review which said that the house was too isolated and so would insist that it is your responsibility to inform yourself and ask me as many questions as you like, before booking. I have made everything as clear as possible.

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the truly secluded and very beautiful home of Allaye in Glenties. The location was incredibly rural -in the best possible way- and a welcome break from our city life! Sitting by a roaring fire with our books (and the cats) was an absolute treat and breakfast was delicious. A wonderful welcome and friendly treatment from Allaye for the duration. Would stay again!

We are a family of five and we had a great time staying in Allaye's cottage. The cottage has a lot of character and history. It has what one needs and should expect for a stay in the Irish county side (and yes, the shower could do with a slight upgrade ). Allaye was a fabulous host and we definitely encourage everyone to follow her tips for day trips in Donegal. We saw stunning places we otherwise wouldn't have found. We definitely recommend the cottage.

Allay's cottage was totally wonderful! A bit cold when we arrived, but a fire in the big open fireplace made the evening very worm and cozy. The surroundings are beautiful with sheep latterly in the garden. The breakfast we got made for us was totally amazing! Thank you!

Allayes cottage is situated in a great spot in glenties. It is only a quick spin away from Ardara where you will find cosy pubs called the beehive and Nancy's. Allaye automatically makes you feel straight at home and couldn't have asked for a better host. Well worth a visit to this beautiful spot.

The accomodation lived up to our expectations and more. We were very warmly welcomed, stayed in a warm and comfortable bed and enjoyed a great fireplace and breakfast. The surroundings are beatiful, although as stated in the ad a car or a roadbike is probably essential as distances are quite long. Would definitly recommend it to other travellers.

Allaye has made up a wonderful little place in the middle of nowhere. You shouldn't expect WIFI or a TV but if you search a nice fire in the evening, delicious Irish breakfast and a lovely cat (she is my friend now) you are absolutely right. Allaye is very kind and gave us insider travelling tips. We were three students searching spontaneously for a place for one night so it was perfect. Moreover there is a small cosy shed with maximum privacy. Perfect for couples.
