About This Listing
Ideally located along the Wild Atlantic Way, and within easy reach of Sliabh Liag (Europe's highest sea cliffs), Lough Anna Cottage is available to let either as an entire house or a single private room (hosted by the owner).
Situated 2km from Glenties, which is east of Ardara and north of Donegal town, this traditional stone-built cottage is about 200 years old. It is in good condition with reasonably spacious and comfortable rooms. It has one medium sized bedroom with a double bed and one bedroom with two bunk beds, a kitchen, a bathroom and a living room with a working fireplace. There is the possibility of an additional bed which can be made up in the room with the bunk beds.
The cottage is fully furnished and the kitchen has a large and good quality gas/electric cooker, table, chairs etc. There is also a washing machine, but no television and no tumble dryer. Washing is generally dried on the line outside or on an inside dryer rack in bad weather. Both wood and turf are supplied for use in the living room fire place. The house also has a good oil-fired central heating system. All household linen and cleaning is included in the price. It is set in about an acre and a half of woodland and meadows with its own private drive and parking space. There are two friendly cats, who live both inside and out. If people prefer, they can remain outside for the entire duration of their stay.
Please note : a full Irish or light continental breakfast is included in the price for two or three people sharing a room. After this, any groups of four or five people will effectively be occupying the entire cottage and must be self-catering. The entire cottage is also available for two or three people seeking complete privacy or extra space, but the balance of the rate for the entire cottage must be paid on arrival. This is the difference between the sum paid to airbnb and €90 for one night or €80 per night for two or more nights.
For both options, an evening meal can be provided on arrival by request - €12 -€15 per person.
Guests have access to all areas of the house and garden.
Interaction with Guests
I live in a secluded and private location with complete tranquility, yet am surrounded by very caring and helpful neighbours. This sort of sums up Donegal : peace where you want it and help when needed. Add to this the stunning coast line and mountains, walking opportunities and great wealth of traditional music, the pubs and their people and you have a place I call home. - a little slice of heaven.
Public transport in the immediate area is a little limited. Buses from Dublin and Dublin airport are very regular, but most go as far as Donegal Town which is 35km from Glenties. I occasionally give lifts to people who have come without a car, but most come here by car.
Smokers welcome as long as they refrain from smoking indoors. House should be left reasonably clean and tidy, given that there is no cleaning charge.
Please be aware that there are two resident cats.
Allaye was very welcoming and offered a plethora of local things to do. She provided a wonderful traditional Irish breakfast!
Allaye was warm and charming from the beginning of our visit, lighting a lovely fire and sharing tea! Our chats with her were a delight--such an engaging person!! The breakfast was tip-top and featured some of Allaye's jams. Visits before the fire were most enjoyable!!
Lough Anna Cottage is in a beautiful and special little corner in County Donegal. And since the whole county is wild, rugged and incredibly beautiful that's saying a lot! Allaye was in incredible and gracious host. She greeted me warmly with tea and a chat in her living room. I stayed in a lovely room and she went out of her way to make sure I was warm enough during this chilly May. The next day I enjoyed a delicious breakfast, Allaye's company and then I took off to follow the route around the area that she suggested. If you have a whole day - definitely explore all the areas she suggests!! It was a glorious day and the scenery is just stunning. It was a great stay and I truly enjoyed my time!
I would definitely recommend staying at Allaye's cottage. She is a great host and such a kind and interesting person! Allaye really made us feel at home, it was a pity we couldn't stay longer. The cottage is in a very quiet area surrounded by beautiful nature and we were provided with all the necessary directions to easily find it. Allaye's cordiality made me appreciate once more the Irish hospitality and last but not least she is an excellent baker! Thank you Allaye!
Allaye was an amazing host going above and beyond to provide us with nice travelling tips and helping us with every need. She was extremely nice and our tea conversations after a long day of travelling were amazing. She took us to a local pub for some Irish music, lend us an adapter and gave us her map to travel in Donegal. The scenery around her house is amazing! Definitely recommend it and if I am ever in Donegal I will be back!
