Available to let either as an entire house or a single private room (hosted by the owner).
Lough Anna Cottage is situated 2km from Glenties, which is east of Ardara and north of Donegal town. This traditional stone-built cottage is about 200 years old. It is in good condition with reasonably spacious and comfortable rooms. It has one medium sized bedroom with a double bed and one bedroom with two bunk beds, a kitchen, a bathroom and a living room with a working fireplace. There is the possibility of an additional bed which can be made up in the room with the bunk beds.
The cottage is fully furnished and the kitchen has a large and good quality gas/electric cooker, table, chairs etc. There is also a washing machine, but no television and no tumble dryer. Washing is generally dried on the line outside or on an inside dryer rack in bad weather. Both wood and turf are supplied for use in the living room fire place. The house also has a good oil-fired central heating system. All household linen and cleaning is included in the price. It is set in about an acre and a half of woodland and meadows with its own private drive and parking space. There are two friendly cats, who live both inside and out. If people prefer, they can remain outside for the entire duration of their stay.
For a single room only (sleeps two or three with additional bed made up) - €45/night plus €15 supplement for 3rd person. Full irish or light/continental breakfast included.
For the entire cottage - €80/night. Will sleep up to 5 persons. Self catering only.
For both options, an evening meal can be provided on arrival by request - €12 per person.
Guests have access to all areas of the house and garden.
I live in a secluded and private location with complete tranquility, yet am surrounded by very caring and helpful neighbours. This sort of sums up Donegal : peace where you want it and help when needed. Add to this the stunning coast line and mountains, walking opportunities and great wealth of traditional music, the pubs and their people and you have a place I call home. - a little slice of heaven.
Public transport in the immediate area is a little limited. Buses from Dublin and Dublin airport are very regular, but most go as far as Donegal Town which is 35km from Glenties. I occasionally give lifts to people who have come without a car, but most come here by car.
Allaye was a kind and gracious host. The cottage was a little hard for us to find, but a gem once we did! We (four women) found the cottage peaceful and an absolutely wonderful place to relax. Allaye cooked an incredible meal for us the first night, and it was a treat after a long drive. I would sincerely recommend her cottage to anyone wishing to see a bit of the Irish countryside. The view of the meadow, shed, and neighbor's sheep has been our favorite thus far.
Thank you very much about take care with my parents and their granddaughters. The y ve got lots of fun, delicious breakfast and amazing destination.
Our stay with Allaye was delightful! Wonderful country setting, sheep in the pastures, beautiful flowers. Close to some of the most beautiful scenery we have ever seen! Allaye gave directions for a route to drive to hit the best spots. The accommodations were very comfortable. Allaye was lovely and very welcoming, and an A+ baker.
Allaye house is a very nice cottage in the middle of Donegal, we haven't seen Allaye to much as we spent only one night their and she left us the house, but everything was ready for us, breakfast, fireplace and it is a nice and cosy house, with two nice cats :) the only thing is for the 3rd cottage, there are two real beds, quite comfortable but the 3rd bed is a mattress on the floor and it was a bit cold, but except that we had a nice time there
The Host: Wow! Allaye is a great host and made us feel welcome and home from the very first second as she served us snacks drinks as we arrived. She told us a lot about the area, the people, what's going on. She's been around the world and conversation with her is enjoyable. She is easy going, as is her friend who occasionally drops by and who invited us to one of his concerts. She has a big file with loads of information about things to do in Co. Donegal and gave us detailed maps of the area and one of her books about walking trips. She bakes her own bread, which is delicious, as is her cooked breakfast.
The house: The place is well kept and suits all needs. The beds were comfortable and everything worked alrigth. You can park you car next to the cottage.
The location: Stunning area! The valley is quiet and remote enough to get away from it all and relax, yet still accessible and you'll get to the towns of Glenties and Ardara quickly by car. Nearby is the beautiful Maghera beach and the amazing Glengesh Pass. It's also a good base to go to Sliabh Liag/Sleave League and Glenveagh National Park. If you are looking for typical irish boreens, this is the place to be.. or to drive :-)
**** Recommend this place without any hesitation
Thank you again, Michael. I have re painted the room since you left and was this morning emptying out some drawers and improving the clothes-hanging situation, so just as well. Thanks too for the GPS coordinates which I've now added to the site. It was great having you.
We loved our stay at Allaye's cottage. The directions were very detailed which made finding the place very easy, even late at night in the dark. Allaye was very interesting and friendly and we enjoyed chatting over full delicious Irish breakfast and tea. The cottage is full of character and is "guarded" by two cats, one of whom is rightfully nicknamed Diva. You will most likely need a car to get to the place as it is situated a bit off the beaten path, which makes it extra nice in my humble view. The sound and smell of nature around the cottage alone is worth a stay. I would definitely recommend Allaye's cottage and would love to go back some day.
Our stay at Lough Anna cottage was very nice. Allaye is a welcoming person, and she speaks a perfect french. Her house is small but so warm, and typical of Irish cottages, that we loved it. We particularly appreciated the fireplace at nights, and the view over the sheeps! The place is quite remote, which offers a perfect quietness, but very close to Glenties, where there are pubs and everything. We loved that Allaye, who is a fiddle player, invited us to a music session where she played, a moving and memorable night for us!
We stayed at Allaye's one night with the family. We arrived later than we had wished, but Allaye made us feel so welcome and prepared a warm fire. The house is beautiful and full of charm. As we arrived in the dark, it was great to discover the nature in the morning. We had a little walk above the house, yet it would had deserved so much more than just a little walk (next time when the little one gets older!).
It has been very interesting discussing with Allaye, she is very open minded. She explained many things about Ireland that we did not know. And she gave us a good hint about the fantastic Maghera sand beach not far, where we had a memorable picnic. As a matter of fact the whole stay was memorable! We loved it.
Allaye- Thank you for your wonderful hospitality. We really enjoyed our stay..Stunning location, very comfortable lodgings, beautiful food and very warm and welcoming company.
