A traditional, 200 year old cottage with some modern comforts and many original features. Located on a quiet back road, the cottage is set in private land with a sweeping meadow at the front and many mature trees to all sides. It is about 6 minutes drive from the nearest town (Glenties) and suits those looking for complete tranquility. Good shops, pubs, places to eat in Glenties and nearby Ardara. Stunning mountain and coastal scenery in every direction.

The space

Ideally located along the Wild Atlantic Way, and within easy reach of Sliabh Liag (Europe's highest sea cliffs), Lough Anna Cottage is available to let ideally for four people, though an additional bed can be provided to bring the number up to five. There is a B&B option for up to three people from September onwards. See 'Rates' below.

Situated 2km from Glenties, which is east of Ardara and north of Donegal town, this traditional stone-built cottage is about 200 years old. It is in good condition with reasonably spacious and comfortable rooms. It has one medium sized bedroom with a double bed and one bedroom with two bunk beds (and one occasional, additional bed), a kitchen, a bathroom and a living room with a working fireplace. There is the possibility of an additional bed which can be made up in the room with the bunk beds.

The cottage is fully furnished and the kitchen has a large and good quality gas/electric cooker, table, chairs etc. There is also a washing machine, but no television and no tumble dryer. Washing is generally dried on the line outside or on an inside dryer rack in bad weather. Both wood and turf are supplied for use in the living room fire place. The house also has a good oil-fired central heating system. All household linen and cleaning is included in the price. It is set in about an acre and a half of woodland and meadows with its own private drive and parking space. There is one friendly cat, who lives both inside and out. If people prefer, it is possible to rent the house without the cat.

Single night occupancy of the entire cottage is possible but a higher rate is charged: €100.

A B&B option is available for up to three people from the beginning of September : €35 for a single person, €60 for two, €85 for three. An evening meal can be provided on arrival by request - €12 -€15 per person.

Other things to note

Please read the house description - all the way through - and make sure that this is what you are looking for. I recently had a review which said that the house was too isolated and so would insist that it is your responsibility to inform yourself and ask me as many questions as you like, before booking. I have made everything as clear as possible.

This was by far my favourite stay on my trip to Ireland. We arrived to an immaculately clean cottage with a fire already set, a tasty loaf of baked bread and all the comforts of home (including the very sweet cat!). The grounds and surrounds are wooded and stunning with Lough Anna just a short walk away - I mountain biked there - its a relatively steep ride up but was worth the climb to see the Lough. Glenties village is a short drive or fairly easy walk away, offering shops, cafes and bars. Maghera Beach is also really worth a visit, as is Nancy's Bar in Ardara (oysters and Guinness were a treat). My only complaint; that I couldn't stay longer :)

If Donegal isn't on the top of your itinerary for Ireland, change your itinerary. We only had one night in Donegal, but if we were to do it again, we would have dedicated a lot more time to this truly mystical land. Allaye's place was secluded, rustic, and absolutely beautiful. Our host was wonderful and prepared scones for the next morning before she left us to ourselves. We wish we stayed so much longer!

Beautiful cottage in an incredible part of Ireland! My family and I stayed for 2 nights and we were like pigs in mud. Fresh scones on arrival, fire roaring, hot shower, cosy beds and all the books we could want. All the little details and odds and ends in the house enhanced our experience. And Maori the cat was a sweetheart! Such a beautiful cottage. Swell location to explore Donegal from. Can't recommend this place enough!

We were made really welcome from the start, and we ate with Allaye's family as if we were returning friends. One of the highlights of our trip was going for a walk with one of Allaye's 3 dogs (millie) who acted as our guide through adventurous terrain! The food we had was lovely, and Allaye's partner (Declan) even helped us start a fire pit so we could roast marshmallows whilst looking at the stars. This kind of hospitality is why we use airb&b.
