About This Listing
Ideally located along the Wild Atlantic Way, and within easy reach of Sliabh Liag (Europe's highest sea cliffs), Lough Anna Cottage is available to let either as an entire house or a single private room (hosted by the owner).
Situated 2km from Glenties, which is east of Ardara and north of Donegal town, this traditional stone-built cottage is about 200 years old. It is in good condition with reasonably spacious and comfortable rooms. It has one medium sized bedroom with a double bed and one bedroom with two bunk beds, a kitchen, a bathroom and a living room with a working fireplace. There is the possibility of an additional bed which can be made up in the room with the bunk beds.
The cottage is fully furnished and the kitchen has a large and good quality gas/electric cooker, table, chairs etc. There is also a washing machine, but no television and no tumble dryer. Washing is generally dried on the line outside or on an inside dryer rack in bad weather. Both wood and turf are supplied for use in the living room fire place. The house also has a good oil-fired central heating system. All household linen and cleaning is included in the price. It is set in about an acre and a half of woodland and meadows with its own private drive and parking space. There are two friendly cats, who live both inside and out. If people prefer, they can remain outside for the entire duration of their stay.
Please note : a full Irish or light continental breakfast is included in the price for two or three people sharing a room. After this, any groups of four or five people will effectively be occupying the entire cottage and must be self-catering. The entire cottage is also available for two or three people seeking complete privacy or extra space, but the balance of the rate for the entire cottage must be paid on arrival. This is the difference between the sum paid to airbnb and €90 for one night or €80 per night for two or more nights.
For both options, an evening meal can be provided on arrival by request - €12 -€15 per person.
Guests have access to all areas of the house and garden.
Interaction with Guests
I live in a secluded and private location with complete tranquility, yet am surrounded by very caring and helpful neighbours. This sort of sums up Donegal : peace where you want it and help when needed. Add to this the stunning coast line and mountains, walking opportunities and great wealth of traditional music, the pubs and their people and you have a place I call home. - a little slice of heaven.
Public transport in the immediate area is a little limited. Buses from Dublin and Dublin airport are very regular, but most go as far as Donegal Town which is 35km from Glenties. I occasionally give lifts to people who have come without a car, but most come here by car.
Smokers welcome as long as they refrain from smoking indoors. House should be left reasonably clean and tidy, given that there is no cleaning charge.
Please be aware that there are two resident cats.
Allaye was wonderful and so welcoming! Her home is tucked away in a beautiful part of Ireland that we were so lucky to visit. She is lovingly restoring the house and her personal style and attention to detail is apparent everywhere, including the delicious irish breakfast. My husband and I had a great meal in a nearby town thanks to her suggestion, and spent a very restful night in the country quiet.
I will treasure my stay with Allaye for a long time! When my fiance and I arrived (quite late and behind schedule), Allaye had her wood-burning fireplace in her living room going and welcomed us with some tea and biscuits. Although, it was late, she and Davy stayed up with us and chatted with us for an hour. Our room is seriously lovely - just like the rest of the house - it has such an Irish cottage charm. Allaye cooked us breakfast, which included home-baked bread and jams made by Allaye herself! To top it all off, she also gave us a very detailed and lovely driving guide around Donegal County with the greatest views, sights, pubs, and restaurants. Allaye has such a warm heart and manner that makes it seem as if her face is always smiling. Thank you dearly! We can't way to see the second cottage when it's completed.
Allaye's house is a hide-away amidst beautiful nature. We enjoyed staying there and talking to Allaye while having a wonderful breakfast. Her knowledge about places to visit is very helpful. We would recommend Allaye's cottage to people who want to experience the atmosphere of a typical Irish house.
Allaye lives on a very nice and romantic place. She has an old and very cosy house with a lot of nice details. Allaye ist a lovely women with a lot of interests. Although she has not so much time for us because of her own trip to Berlin, we had some fine talks about different theme. We love her friendly and honest nature. Many thanks for all !
Allaye was very welcoming and offered a plethora of local things to do. She provided a wonderful traditional Irish breakfast!
Allaye was kind and welcoming despite the fact that my sister and I arrived two hours later than we said we would. She made us feel very cosy in her cottage in a room with warm quilts and bunk beds and fixed us some tea despite the late hour. She sat and chatted amiably with us for a nice long time, and we learned so many interesting things about our lovely host!
The location was wonderful - the cottage is out in the countryside, so one truly feels like one is experiencing the "real" Ireland. My sister and I drove around the whole country, and we thought Donegal was by far the most beautiful and pristine of any county we visited. Sheep and lambs frolicked in Allaye's front yard, birds sang sweetly, and the air was pure and fresh. Allaye was so helpful and drew up a driving route for us to take in order to see the best parts of the county - we particularly enjoyed her recommendation to visit Sliabh Liag, the highest sea cliffs in Europe.
Breakfast featured bread and jams home-made by our host, who is a professional baker and chef! It was delicious, homey, and filling.
Allaye was a very genuine, down-to-earth, kind person whom it was a pleasure to meet, and her cottage was a delight to stay in. We would definitely recommend!!
