About this listing
Ideally located along the Wild Atlantic Way, and within easy reach of Sliabh Liag (Europe's highest sea cliffs), Lough Anna Cottage is available to let either as an entire house or a single private room (hosted by the owner).
Situated 2km from Glenties, which is east of Ardara and north of Donegal town, this traditional stone-built cottage is about 200 years old. It is in good condition with reasonably spacious and comfortable rooms. It has one medium sized bedroom with a double bed and one bedroom with two bunk beds, a kitchen, a bathroom and a living room with a working fireplace. There is the possibility of an additional bed which can be made up in the room with the bunk beds.
The cottage is fully furnished and the kitchen has a large and good quality gas/electric cooker, table, chairs etc. There is also a washing machine, but no television and no tumble dryer. Washing is generally dried on the line outside or on an inside dryer rack in bad weather. Both wood and turf are supplied for use in the living room fire place. The house also has a good oil-fired central heating system. All household linen and cleaning is included in the price. It is set in about an acre and a half of woodland and meadows with its own private drive and parking space. There are two friendly cats, who live both inside and out. If people prefer, they can remain outside for the entire duration of their stay.
Please note : a full Irish or light continental breakfast is included in the price for two or three people sharing a room. After this, any groups of four or five people will effectively be occupying the entire cottage and must be self-catering. The entire cottage is also available for two or three people seeking complete privacy or extra space, but the balance of the rate for the entire cottage must be paid on arrival. This is the difference between the sum paid to airbnb and €90 for one night or €80 per night for two or more nights.
For both options, an evening meal can be provided on arrival by request - €12 -€15 per person.
Guests have access to all areas of the house and garden.
Interaction with Guests
I live in a secluded and private location with complete tranquility, yet am surrounded by very caring and helpful neighbours. This sort of sums up Donegal : peace where you want it and help when needed. Add to this the stunning coast line and mountains, walking opportunities and great wealth of traditional music, the pubs and their people and you have a place I call home. - a little slice of heaven.
Public transport in the immediate area is a little limited. Buses from Dublin and Dublin airport are very regular, but most go as far as Donegal Town which is 35km from Glenties. I occasionally give lifts to people who have come without a car, but most come here by car.
Smokers welcome as long as they refrain from smoking indoors. House should be left reasonably clean and tidy, given that there is no cleaning charge.
Please be aware that there are two resident cats.
I’ve had one of the best times of my life in Donegal, and without the night I had with Allaye, in her cottage, the things would have not been the same. Donegal is a place which can truly set you free and can give you the chance to think, but we talk about a real and deep thinking. The cottage respects this peaceful and quiet experience and represents a perfect continuum of this sensational and dramatic place that is the Donegal. But there is more. Allaye herself is part of this continuum and it’s impossible not to love her warm, friendly and honest way of hosting you. Finally, the room is spacious and clean, the bed is very comfy. The same for the bathroom. The breakfast is sensational and that bread is a gift from the sky. If you love Donegal and the things that place can offer, you will love Allaye and the cottage. We will come back (soon). Thank you once again Allaye!
We've had a lovely stay in Allaye's charming cottage. The breakfast with home-made bread and scones, as well as the evenings near the turf fire, were great moments in our Irish trip. Allaye is a very friendly and sociable host with whom we've had wonderful conversations. We definitely recommend this place !
Un moment de tranquillité dans la campagne irlandaise dans le calme près du feu. Les chambres sont confortables. Allaye est très disponible et une très bonne cuisinière ( scones et cakes délicieux). Très bon petit déjeuner!
Well truly enjoyed our stay at Lough Anna Cottage. Although tucked away off the main road from Ardagh to Glenties it was actually quite easy to find. The cottage is fully equipped and perfect for max. 5 people. Allaye was a very warm and gracious host. She even made fresh scones for us in the kitchen of the cottage! It was the perfect place to get away from it all!
We enjoyed a really great stay with Allaye in her beautiful cottage. It was only for one night, but was a very special place. The location is very remote, and peaceful - exactly what we were looking for. It was a little difficult to find at first, but using satnav and Allaye's directions, we got there.
Allaye was very hospitable, and was able to recommend a number of pubs near by for an evening meal, and gave us some delicious homemade wheaten bread for breakfast.
We hope to come back once the new converted shed has been finished!
