It was a comforting stay. I do usually like to learn areas from locals but I understand the hosts may have been a little busy. They provided coffee the first night but I couldn't seem to contact them later which would have been nice... Id say a overall great beautiful secluded nest is a great appeal for rest after visiting the big island.
I didn't like that the other air bnb guests neighbors are too close and you can hear every word. I do enjoy the Balinese style since it is beautiful but leaves you with no privacy. An unfortunate thing too is we were awakened several times in the morning to domestic violence issues from the neighbors and it almost felt necessary to intervene. The good thing is it's a beautiful locale and relatively cheap. Too bad it's so far away from Kona though.
Brad and Linda upgraded us to the Naia house for our stay which was very nice. Lots of privacy on their property and we hardly saw another person for our entire stay. Very peaceful with beautiful views.
We stayed at Brad and Linda's place whilst we explored The Big Island. We found the farm to be a welcome change from the typical resorts/condos and a wonderful way if surrounding yourself with nature. If you want to get away from it all, this is the place to do it.
We actually stayed at the Dolphin cottage which is next door to Whale one. It was an incredibly peaceful and relaxing place. The cabins are located on the farm surrounded by lush tropical plants and coffee along with the mac nut trees. I loved going to bed with the sounds of rain.
Brad was very welcoming, he greeted us even though we came late in the evening and showed us around. He pays a lot of attention to details so it all makes you feel very comfortable. Especially I noticed the small candles in the shower and along handrails, it was so cozy and pleasant. Brad would light them every night and every time we came back the atmosphere was romantic :)
The cottage has everything you need almost like at home. Great coffee and organic fruit for you to enjoy! The shower is outside it's very comfortable and private. I liked the outdoor kitchen a lot. It was very nice to cook breakfast on the fresh air.
Some specific things that we have noticed:
- sometimes the mac nuts would fall from the tall tree on our roof :)
- grab your hairdryer
- if your neighbors are loud you'll hear them easily ( we were lucky to stay with a sweet couple who were respectful and calm :)
There is a decent hike towards the ocean with great views! If you take the road right next to the gates it will lead you all the way down, you'll have to walk uphill on the way back but it's worth it!
Paradise!! A perfect few days of peace and quiet and pure tranquility. About 45mins from kona, and easy to find. The outdoor kitchen is good and we didn't expect the microwave and toaster in our room so that was a bonus! We had no problems with bugs and geckos, no more than other places we stayed on the big island (we didn't stay in any hotels) and he dogs totally ignored us. Oh almost forgot.... Delicious coffee, banana a and papaya!!!!
Brad's whale cottage is a great little cozy retreat in South
Kona. The cottage with its cozy king bed, open air bathroom/shower (there is mesh paneling to keep the bugs out) and the outdoor kitchen allows you to lead a tranquil, simple, rustic existence, without being so rustic as to be uncomfortable. It was great to be surrounded by fruit trees with papayas and Mac nuts everywhere.
Brad and Linda were very nice and welcoming, and responsive to calls and emails, though we only spoke in person on a couple of occasions during the five stay.
Pros: comfortable, rustic, but still clean and connected (wifi, not strong though I had trouble connecting my phone). Price was great. Would stay here again.
Cons: SOUTH. Good 20 minutes or so south if Captain Cook, which left us with some long drives in the evenings after dinner/dives up in Kona; not super private if there is a couple in the cottage next door, as you can hear them quite easily; Brad's German Shepherds don't bite but they will surround you and bark in a not-so-friendly way. I've grown up with dogs but was still a bit nervous the couple of times I ran into them on the property.
Brad and Linda were great, very nice and quite accommodating. The cottage was comfy and we had pretty much everything we could need. The grounds are beautiful and I liked the location because it was a great halfway point for a lot of lovely things.
A couple things to keep in mind if you plan on staying here: 1. the bathroom from our room was around the corner which I think is just fine but going outside in the middle of the night to use the bathroom spooked me a bit, even though it's very well lit, it just might be good to be mentally prepared. 2. Don't forget your bug spray for mosquitos! 3. There will be geckos and the occasional bug in the cottage so don't stay here if that's something that will ruin your trip (it didn't bother me). 4. It's pretty secluded so if you don't want to drive at least 20 minutes every time you eat I would plan on utilizing the lovely outdoor kitchen.
