If you want the ultimate Hawaiian experience on The Big Island, then you not needn't look any further. The secluded Whale Cottage at Brad and Linda’s South Kona Coffee Estate and Retreat is a rare find. Nothing could have prepared me for how perfect this place was going to be! As I travel south from the hustle and bustle of Kona, I can feel the stress and anxiety of normal life drift from my body. Upon arriving at the farm, and entering the keycode at the large white gate, it swung open on a tropical paradise. We were immediately welcomed in many ways, of which I’ll let you discover for yourself when you arrive. Brad gave us a fantastic tour of the property that he created from dense jungle with 15 years of hard work and love. Our accommodations in the Whale Cottage were simply amazing. The room was large and incredibly appointed with a giant bed, lounging chair and ottoman, refrig and microwave, and other necessities including a French Press to enjoy the best Kona coffee you will ever sip! The separate bath suite right next door was such a pleasure that I couldn't have been happier. To me, nothing says Hawaii as well as an open air shower, and the fact that this one was screened in from the surrounding foliage, and roofed in, made it available whatever the weather. The on demand hot water was amazing. The open-air kitchen was fantastic, and very well appointed with pots pans and dishware of all kinds. Each morning on my way to the kitchen, I was greeted by the most beautiful Hawaiian Geckos sunning themselves on the gigantic tropical leaves growing by the deck. At night Brad would light the outdoor candles lining the deck rails, which cast the area in a wonderful glow. Brad was incredibly mellow helpful host, always willing to offer advice and helpful information, of just chat about the farm and the events of the day. I can’t wait to return!

We stayed in the whale cottage for 6 nights and had a great time! The cottage and bathroom are cozy, the openair kitchenette provides everything you need (including drinking water). The Kona coffee from the farm was excellent. Brad is very helpfull and gives a lot of usefull tips about what to see and do in the area. However keep in mind that you live on a farm and there are bugs and mosquitos around. In the early morning you hear the cars on the highway. The dogs are friendly, don't have to be afraid of, but take inside your shoes :-)
This is a lovely location and a great value! You will want to be comfortable with nature to stay here - there are bugs and geckos everywhere.
We had a nice stay in the whale cottage. The cottage was nice and the grounds outside were fantastic. We were surrounded by tropical fruit and macadamia nut trees and had a nice view of the sunset over the water. Brad was very accessible and helpful - giving good tips and info about the area. Since the cottage is in such an outdoor setting it means there are some bugs and lizards around and about so if you are sensitive to such things this might not be the place for you.
We had a truly fabulous time staying in this cottage, it was a perfect balance between comfort, privacy and rustic jungle living, complemented by an unbeatable price. The cottage was larger than the pictures led us to believe, with a private bathroom attached. The king bed was an added plus. We found the cottage to be located considerably south of many "famous" beaches, but with great access to the hiking around the volcanoes and local sites. Brad was a wonderful host, providing insider suggestions for the best snorkeling, swimming and dolphin sighting spots. This cottage is a wonderful respite from city living and nothing compares to the symphony of tropical birds in the morning, truly paradise.
This place is a real gem. The bedroom is cleverly designed to simultaneously feel like you are living in a jungle while letting the cool breeze and bird songs seep through. It has all the spare amenities you might need like reasonably fast wi-fi, a fridge, television, and a comfy leather recliner. Since you'll be living in an actual working coffee and macadamia nut farm, the fruits and coffee that come complimentary with your stay is astounding! When we ran out of breakfast fruit, we just went out to the grounds and picked some more. There is a basic country-like kitchen to grill fresh fish and cook up breakfast. While I really appreciated the simple laid back accommodations, I was truly impressed by the meticulous attention to detail like the welcome flowers on our first night, the magically lit candles throughout the cottage, to the pieces of fruit presents we received throughout our week long stay. As far as location is concerned, I love that it was far away from the tourist trap feel of kona, but only 40 minutes away from the main must-visit destinations like Captain Cook Monument, Honaunau "two step", the Kohala beaches, and about an hour drive away from the Volcano National Park.
Brad was very friendly and accommodating. He gave us ample instructions as well as pointers to the local attractions and insider information on the most memorable big island activities.
Overall great value and great hospitality in a truly memorable place in paradise.
A great escape and hideaway in a South Kona coffee plantation. Brad was very helpful and welcoming.
Refereshed awakened in the morning surrounded by tropical plants, showering in an airy bathroom feeling the sun and having a self brewed home grown poem like coffee and some fresh macadamia nuts and maybe some seasonal garden picked sweet fruits that´s how i experienced an outstanding time at Ron and Linda´s place.
You hardly never know places which affetcts you instantly and ongoing till you have been there. That´s one, at least to me.
To me it´s the purity of the place and of the goods you´re welcomed to enjoy like the coffee and the fruits and the humble honesty of its owners. You will be amazed and carried away. BnB is so much better to enjoy. Be confident and do it!
Magical! From the moment we arrived we felt as if we had entered "Paradise"!
Brad and Linda have thought of everything you need to feel welcomed, comfortable and cared for. The Whale Cottage was simple, clean and so comfortable. The breeze is always cool and relaxing.
No air conditioning to spoil the scent of Hawaii. Leo the German Shepherd is sweet and loves to have a ball thrown for him. The outdoor kitchen had all that was needed to cook. The private bathroom adjacent to our room was so spacious, new, and with unending hot water due to the Rennai tankless water heater. Brad's Kona coffee is the "Bomb". I have never had coffee of this quality! Smooth, mellow and mmmm good! The fresh Mangos, pineapple, macadamia nuts, bananas are all growing around the property along with the coffee. The property is also in full bloom with beautiful flowers. Our stay was magical and relaxing. Thank you Brad and Linda for your generous spirit and wonderful property. This is a great place to stay! The hosts are as congenial as anyone could be; they stay in the background, but are never very far if you need help with anything. The cabins are rustic but very clean & complete--out of the 5 ohanas I rented on this trip, this one was superior in every way.
A few words of what to expect tho--this ohana is REALLY out in the bush, and it is for folks who are pretty physically able. I am disabled, and had a tough time with the charming crooked stairs down to the c abin.
