About this listing
Villa Padi Menari is a beautiful private villa tucked in a serene nook of Tegallalang padi fields, a mere 7km north of Ubud. Consisting of 3 bedrooms with ensuite bath, all bedrooms come with air-conditioning, king-sized double beds with the finest hotel quality bedding and linen.
A private pool with lush tropical garden overlooks a spectacular view of padi fields and coconut groves beyond.
Padi Menari is the perfect adult hideaway...a quiet sanctuary that will rejuvenate your mind and soul and hopefully liberate you from inhibition.
Price is inclusive of a hearty breakfast, dedicated housemaid, housekeeping, fresh water, fully equipped kitchen and night security.
Padi Menari means Dancing Rice Stalk in Bahasa Indonesia. This very intimate property is on 600 square meter split-level land with the main villa sitting on the lower level of the rice terrace. The main villa is approximately 250 square meters with an ensuite bedroom on each floor, providing privacy and intimacy for individual couples whilst the living hall, pool and garden encourages relaxed, social interaction. Both bedrooms look out onto the lush landscaped gardens and paddy fields beyond. A third room is located in a separate building on the upper ground level. This is known as The Studio and is a cosy retreat for a single couple or as part of the main villa for a third couple or teenage children in the group.
The villa is located in the windy rice field and is very open. Bugs and insects may be frequent visitors. Pest-control and fumigation treatments are done occasionally but we prefer to keep it to the minimum to minimise the use of chemicals. Mostly harmless, may be pesky at times but this is nature.
Overlooking the banks of the paddy fields is a private 4m x 8m plunge pool that will tantalise you to take a dip after a hot day out. You will be tempted to spend your mornings lazing around watching the farmers at work and balmy evenings relaxing with a cool drink in hand so don’t attempt to cram your days with activities.
Padi Menari is a retreat from the world that will return you to yourself. It is a realm that will evoke your emotions and sensations, come with an open mind to embrace all possibilities.Whether you are a group of friends seeking to be free and adventurous, a mature family coming together to reconnect and rejuvenate or a couple reigniting passions and romance, be prepared to indulge in liberating yourself from all inhibitions. It is where artists, yogis and weary city dwellers find solace and peace with nature and oneself. And it is where we hope you will too.
Note: Padi Menari is very much an adult’s getaway and is not child friendly.
The entire Villa is at your disposal during your stay. If you wish to prepare your own meals, our fully equipped modern kitchen should be sufficient to cater to your needs.
We have wireless internet which works well most of the time. However, internet reliability is still a frustrating problem in Bali and is at the mercy of weather conditions and power outages. Fiber optic lines are slowly being laid and has come to Ubud town. We are praying that the infrastructure will be coming to our village area soon but in the meantime, you may experience slowness or downtime occasionally. A good alternative is to get a prepaid local number with data line so you can be connected even when on the go!
Our philosophy of providing equal employment opportunity to the local villagers means that the staff are not formally trained in the hospitality industry and may be lacking in ability compared to the more qualified staff at other commercial establishments. Our housekeeper and villa attendant are from a village nearby and can be quite shy. They are personally trained by villa manager, Nono and for what they may lack in skill, they make up for in honesty and enthusiasm. They are still learning to improve their communication and English skills and we hope you will not find them lacking too much. They are eager to please and will try their best to meet your needs so please do communicate with them on whatever you need.
Interaction with Guests
I love to interact with guests and provide them with as much information as possible to make their holiday hassle-free. I welcome email correspondence sharing advise, tips and just general knowledge tit-bits.
Our Villa is not only surrounded by luscious sawah (paddy fields) on all sides, it sits on a fertile plot with paddy growing right in front. At the height of maturity, you will hear the paddy rustle and dance in the breeze. The view is always different at various times of the crop cycle, from green, fresh shoots newly planted to yellowing gold when the crop is ready for harvest. There is a special window of 2-3 weeks when the fields have been cleared of all harvest, ploughed and waiting for the next planting. This is a magical time when all you see is waterlogged fields which reflects the sky and gives off a sense of living by endless ponds. If you are lucky, you can see the farmers planting the shoots or harvesting their crops. You can even try your hand at the task if you happen to catch the farmer on a good day.
It is advisable to prearrange transportation with us for transit to Padi Menari whether from the airport or any other part of Bali. This is to avoid your taxi driver getting lost in the labyrinth of Tegallalang rice fields!
Bicycle and motorcycle rental can be arranged for you. It is an easy 10 minute ride to downtown Ubud. A private car with a friendly, knowledgeable driver and guide can be at your disposal throughout your stay to take you for tours and sightseeing around the island.
Other Things to Note
Padi Menari’s philosophy is based on a deep and enduring love for the natural environment and surroundings. We are concerned with the overall long-term impact of tourism on the island and thus, we strive to promote sustainable practices whilst remaining true to the spirit and culture of Bali and Ubud in particular. To this end, we try to promote the use of locally produced, ecofriendly products such as organic produce, soaps, shampoos, etc. and through actions such as usage of recycle bags, energy saving bulbs, waste management, etc. where possible. Purified Aqua water is supplied for drinking and cooking and we encourage you to refill your water bottles to help reduce the waste disposal problems on the island.
Do have a look through our Welcome Book & Information Guide placed on the entrance counter of the Villa.
Appreciation and consideration for Bali's natural surroundings and culture should always be observed. On the most part, dressing and behaviour is very open and you can bathe naked in the river for all to care! However, when visiting holy places such as temples and shrines, a more modest and respectful approach is required. Ladies having their periods should refrain from entering such holy places as well. If in doubt, don't be shy to ask. You will find that most Balinese are more than happy to enlighten you on their culture and heritage....sometimes with a little too much more information than you asked for!
Due to the high risk of fire because the villa is predominantly made from wood and because of the many highly flammable materials, the bedrooms are designated as no-smoking and no-open flame zones. Large ashtrays are provided in the living area and poolside, please make sure that you extinguish your cigarettes completely.
We had a great stay in this villa, the view from the swimming pool is beautiful and we all enjoyed it. It is very easy to communicate with Olive, she has answered all kinds of questions, and her flexibility allowed us to check out very late on our last day.
The welcome was well organized and the staff was friendly. Nono picked us up at the airport on time.
We had requests to rent scooter for one day, and they were already in front of our villa the next day in the morning.
However we had some minor disappointments. First of all, there was nobody to look after the villa. The keeper never came, and it would have been very easy for anyone to break in.
Furthermore, the staff left the villa empty during the day and we had to call someone to open the front door which made us wait for a few minutes when we came back from our visits. Same thing happened when we came back from the restaurant in the evening, luckily this time we were all together and one of us had a pair of key.
Also, we know that the staff is not coming from the hospitality industry, however, the third room a bit apart from the villa wasn't very clean.
Lastly we ask for a cook to come over one night to prepare the dinner. Olive previously told me that the cost was 200,000 + cost of the grocery shopping. We paid at the end (phone number hidden) and we couldn't see the receipt for the food. We thought it was a bit expensive. The food was good but didn't necessarily worth this price.
Overall, we had a good experience, and the villa is looking exactly like in the pictures. Everybody enjoyed their stay and we had a great time in Ubud.
I took a risk on olive's rental despite the relatively low number of airbnb reviews and I'm so grateful I did! From the moment I made the reservation 6 months ago, communication with the host was quick, informative, and professional. Olive responded to all of my emails within 24 hours and provided me with all the information I needed prior to my arrival.
The rental was exactly as described: serene and beautiful. The rooms were tastefully decorated in true Balinese style with modern amenities such as AC, hot water, comfy bed/sheets, and wifi. Olive provided things I didn't even know we would need such as the use of their driver for a nominal fee, house staff who provided daily breakfast/cleaning, and a night security.
Please do understand that in exchange for the beauty of nature you will be amongst some insects and wildlife but it is worth it. Thank you olive, for giving us an unforgettable experience! I would rent from you again and recommend you to everyone I know!
The Villa was picture perfect . It looked exactly as in the pictures .The Manager welcomed us and was kind enough to arrange for a chef on urgent basis . However upon checking in the villa did not have the amenities promised with the major issue being the air conditioning not working . While we could live with other short comings like no phone, no wifi, etc., no air conditioning leads to rooms being extremely stuffy in the humid weather conditions making it very difficult to breathe inside the 2 bedrooms. We informed this to the manager however he mentioned that they were just fixed 2 days earlier & he though they were working (website hidden) we had our lunch and after 2 hours checked the rooms again and they were still stuffy . Manager then informed us that this was the best he could offer . This was not acceptable !! So we called Airbnb and were asked to wait and we did we waited for almost two hours to hear from Airbnb, but with no intimation from Airbnb and no other solution offered by the manager , we had to leave the villa with luggage to make other arrangements for the night before it's too late! We had 3 young kids with us and had to salvage some bit of our holiday!
Absolutely No assistance had been extended by the owner, we were left with absolutely no option .
The location of the Villa was lovely , the villa was nicely made however the manager was not at all helpful and all the while we were waiting we could not speak to Olive !!
We at Villa Padi Menari take pride in providing our guests with an idyllic Ubud experience; evident in the feedback we've received thus far. We're glad that you acknowledge the beautiful house and surroundings and our manager's ability to arrange for a chef on short notice.
Disappointingly, you have made untrue sweeping statements of our villa and guest relations. You did attempt to cancel your reservation prior to your arrival via Airbnb and when this failed; you chose to portray your stay as unpleasant and fault us in an attempt to solicit a refund from Airbnb. Our ideal for the villa is to have happy guests. As it was clear you did not want to be here, your 3 nights booking was allowed to be cancelled.
We would like to clarify the following:
1. The air conditioning units are regularly serviced and are in proper working order. Villa Padi Menari is an open air villa set in a paddy field with tropical climate all year around. Cooling efficiency varies throughout the day due to humidity and temperature. Our manager did offer an additional portable air cooler, however the insistence of additional air conditioning units to be installed immediately is baffling.
2. We have a fixed line service, broadband internet connection and Wifi access in the entire villa. In addition to this, we provide mobile phones on loan with prepaid SIM cards should guest require it.
3. We've clearly stated on Airbnb that Villa Padi Menari is not child friendly - to stay in the villa with 3 children is an informed decision made by yourself. We do use mosquito repellent but we were bemused by the following request: ...all the girls are extremely scared of any kind of insects and especially lizards so please try and remove all of them from the house before our arrival...
4. As the villa owner, I received no emails or phone calls from you with regards to any complaint. Furthermore, my emails requesting information prior to your arrival went unanswered. Instead, you had contacted Airbnb in an attempt to cancel the booking during your stay which I believe was your intention even prior to your arrival.
I would like to offer a word of advise. If you are booking through Airbnb in future, please read and understand the abode on offer. Just like Villa Padi Menari, most listings are not commercial establishments with sterile conditions and industrial air-conditioning.
We stayed at Olive's villa for 2 nights and had a wonderful time. As soon as we confirmed our booking Olive reached out to see how she could be off assistance, and she helped to arrange our airport transfer and a cot for our 4 month old. The staff were also very friendly and accommodating, and overall the service was wonderful. The house is beautiful and has a stunning view of a rice field. It's a little far from central ubud, so if your are travelling with a group or with children I recommend hiring a driver for your stay. Our only minor issue was that the bedroom on the lower floor can be susceptible to bugs, and my wife and I ended up with a few mozzy bites. But other than that, my family and I had a great time relaxing at Olive's villa.
We absolutely loved our stay in Olive's villa! The space is typical Bali - super relaxing outdoor and indoor living blending together. The geckos and frogs will sing you to sleep at night. :-) The location is great if you're looking for something a bit outside the hustle of Ubud, but also close enough (roughly 7km) that you can be there in a snap. We were with five adults and it was perfect.. three separate bedrooms each with a bathroom, so everyone had their own space and privacy and could come together in the main common spaces. Olive was incredibly helpful and kind in providing all sorts of recommendations for activities, restaurants, etc. The villa's staff was also wonderful, always making us feel at home and getting us to wherever we wanted to go. Sitting back at home now writing this review, I am missing the magic of Bali very much!
Thank you for spending your holiday at our humble abode, Stephanie. You have been very kind and have truly embraced the spirit of Bali. It was a true pleasure interacting with you. The staff were so happy serving you and your family. Their message: Please come back soon!

About the Host, Olive
Before I became entrenched in Bali, I used to get afflicted with wanderlust every few months or so. I'd travel at least twice a year for at least a week to two at a time, more if I could squeeze out the time and money. My favourite destinations are Thailand, India, Cambodia, Vietnam and of course, Indonesia. Now that I am completely enamoured with Bali, it's the only place I want to be! I am an amateur photographer, nature lover, culture enthusiast, food & coffee addict.
When I visited Ubud a few years ago, I instantly felt the connection...it was like coming home. Padi Menari is my pride and joy and my abode when I get to escape from Kuala Lumpur metropolitan. It has been lovingly and personally enhanced with all the comforts of home and then some. Environmental conservation and cultural harmony is the essence of Padi Menari and everything that can be consciously practiced to cultivate this has been implemented. High standards and distinguished quality is another important aspect and I hope you will find it comfortable and adequate as well. Your candid feedback and suggestions for further improvements will be greatly appreciated.
