Villa Padi Menari is situated 5km north of Ubud town in Tegallalang area surrounded by rice fields. This is a private home catering to travelers who seek an independent experience rather than a generic hotel one. Development is booming in this area with many buildings coming up around us. There is construction happening nearby. Guests now have many options of shops and food stalls nearby as well as easy access to transport.

The space
* You are encouraged to read the entire write up below before booking to understand our ideology and set your expectations.

Made predominantly of wood and open to the elements, the villa is rustic and can seem weather-beaten. It is not for you if you are looking for a sterile, immaculate house.

Padi Menari is located on Jalan Tirta Tawar, at the end of Junjungan and the start of Tegallalang district. It is 5km north of Ubud Cultural Market and only 4km to Tegallalang Rice Terrace (approx. 10 mins by scooter). The best way to get around is on scooter or car with driver, we can arrange either for you easily. The main road in front of the villa has recently been upgraded making the commute easy, safe and fast. The downside is that more traffic is passing by so you will hear traffic noises especially from the bedroom upstairs. We do not have crowing chickens or barking dogs but we do have scooter sounds!

Consisting of 3 bedrooms with ensuite baths, all bedrooms are equipped with air-conditioning and king-sized double beds with the finest hotel quality bedding and linen. A private pool in a lush tropical garden overlooks a spectacular view of paddy fields and coconut groves beyond. Price is inclusive of daily breakfast, housekeeping, fresh water, coffee and tea making facilities and night security.

Padi Menari means Dancing Rice Stalk in Bahasa Indonesia. This intimate property is on 600 square meter split-level land with the main house sitting on the lower level of the rice terrace. The breezy, spacious main house is approximately 250 square meters with an ensuite bedroom on each floor. Both bedrooms look out onto the lush landscaped gardens and paddy fields beyond. The third room is located in a separate building on the upper level and is known as The Studio. This was recently renovated and has the largest bathroom of all. All the bedrooms are configured to provide privacy and intimacy for individuals whilst the living hall, pool and garden encourages coming together for relaxed, social interaction.

The villa is located in the windy rice field and is very open. We try to keep it as clean as possible but the humidity and residue brought in by winds from the fields makes it a daily battle! We share the land with the indigenous creatures of Bali such as white herons, birds, frogs, tokek (giant gecko), field mice, spiders, green snakes and all sorts of insects. For the most part, they avoid humans but occasionally you may encounter a curious creature seeking refuge. Mostly harmless, may be pesky at times but hey! this is nature. Pest-control and fumigation treatments on ants, mosquitoes and bugs are done occasionally but we prefer to minimise the use of harmful chemicals. You may find insect carcasses in the mornings especially if it rained during the night.

Overlooking the banks of the paddy fields is a 4m x 8m plunge pool (approx. 1.7m deep) that will tantalise you to take a dip after a hot day out. The gardens and pool gives you an elevated view of the paddy fields where you will be tempted to spend your mornings lazing around watching the farmers at work and balmy evenings relaxing with a cool drink in hand.

Padi Menari attempts to evoke your emotions and sensations and to facilitate a Balinese experience - come with an open mind to embrace all possibilities. We welcome free and adventurous individuals who respect culture and the local way of life.

Note: Although we love children and have welcomed many families with toddlers and children over the years, Padi Menari is very much an adult’s getaway and is not designed as a child-safe property due to its open concept and multi-levels. Thus, you will need to be responsible for them at all times.

Where you’ll be

Ubud, Bali, Indonesia

Our Villa sits on a fertile plot with paddy growing right in front. At the height of maturity, you will hear the paddy rustle and dance in the breeze. The view is always different at various times of the crop cycle, from green, fresh shoots newly planted to yellowing gold when the crop is almost ready for harvest. There is a special window of 2-3 weeks when the fields have been cleared, ploughed and waiting for the next planting. This is a magical time when all you see is waterlogged fields which reflects the sky and gives off a sense of living by endless ponds. If the timing is right, you can see the farmers planting fresh shoots or harvesting their crops. You can even try your hand at the task if you happen to catch the farmer on a good day.

I am afflicted with wanderlust and constantly need to be on the go. Whether it's for a short weekend getaway to neighbouring towns (always on the road less traveled) or abroad, I love to explore the backwaters of a place. Nature and culture are what I seek. I make it a point to travel to a foreign land at least once a year for no less than a week - prolonged if I could afford the time and money! Through my travels I find that I enjoy South East Asia the most; with it's mystical charms, gorgeous nature and diverse cultures. I am an amateur photographer, fervent nature lover, amorous furry friend, rapturous music junkie, culture enthusiast, and food & coffee addict. Oh! And I am an avid fisherwoman! Catch and release using baitcaster and top water lures are my thing. Personality-wise, I am very forthright and enjoy witty, open communication. I believe in Karma and "you reap what you sow". When I visited Ubud a few years ago, I became completely enamoured with it. There was an instant connection, as though I'd been looking for it all my life. And then I found Padi Menari... It is my pride and joy and my little oasis when I get to escape from maddening Kuala Lumpur where I have to be for work. It has been lovingly and personally enhanced with all the comforts of home and then some. Environmental conservation and cultural harmony is the essence of Padi Menari and everything that can be consciously practiced to cultivate this has been implemented. For my properties, I try to imbue the same standards and quality that I personally appreciate. Five star hotel it is not and there are certain things I won't have because I find it unnecessary and wasteful. Practicality overrules fluff, comfort reigns over extravagance. Of course, nothing's perfect and whilst I am steadfast (most say stubborn!) in my philosophies and ideas, I value constructive suggestions and feedback. After all, we are constantly learning, evolving and seeking improvements right? Live and love passionately, completely and unabashedly!
