We had planned to leave winter cold Norway behind and stay in Costa Rica from 1st of December 2014 to the 26th of Febuary 2015. Our kids are 9 and 13 years old. We had already some people we wanted to meet in Santo Domingo, but they could not accommodate us so we had to find something ourselves. We found Bibi’s bed and breakfast on Air BnB and considered that to be a reasonable option including breakfast and booked this for the entire three months period. We are happy to say that we never regret this choice.
Jim was really helpful with travel advice and a lot of knowledge about Costa Rica, and Bibi always greeted us in the morning with her wonderful breakfast with eggs and toast and a bowl of fresh fruits and often something extra like Gallo Pinto or American Pancakes.
For our kids this proved to be a perfect environment to both feel at home and to get to practice their English and Spanish at the same time.
The time we stayed there we also made friends with many other guests. Some of the guests were recurring guests and some were there for the first time (all were from North America). Some stayed a month and some stayed shorter. Anyway I feel that we have made friends for life and some of them I am pretty sure we will meet again. This is just the way it was with Bibi, we just automatically got to know all the new people coming in!
One of the highlights was when Bibi invited us for turkey on Christmas day with the other guests and some of their own friends living in Costa Rica. What a wonderful meal!
Jim and Bibi also have two cats and one dog which our kids loved from the instant they met them.
When we’re going back to Costa Rica we will definetly stay at Bibi’s bed and breakfast again.
James and Bibi met us and led us to the house and offered us a glass of wine. We stayed for 5 nights. The house is a large 5 bedroom in a residential suburb of San Jose. It is in Santo Domingo, which is about a 20 minute drive from the center. The beds were comfortable and the kitchen was well equipped. The garden is beautiful.
The house is not located where indicated on the Airbnb map. You need a car to get around if you stay here. Public transport is a 15 minute walk. There is a large grocery store about a 7 minute walk away from the house, but no restaurants or other services. The water pressure is low even by Central American standards if you want hot water.
Our hosts were friendly and helpful, but were not able to remedy all of our concerns during our stay. They did do their best to make our stay pleasant. The breakfast of fruit, bread and eggs was fine.
Bibi and James were very accomodating to my needs and that I was comfortable. My flight was really late that night and I got taxi service and a bigger room since one of the tenants still did not leave. I was there only one night, but certainly enjoyed my stay. This place would be great place if you speak little Spanish or ir you need to brush on your English. Either way Pura Vida!
Cualquier manera Pura Vida!
Bibi and Jim are perfect hosts. They have a wealth of information about the area at their fingertips. Not only do they open their home to you, they assist in anything you want to do and also offer transportation when it is possible for them. You would not go wrong if you select Bbi's B&B. They make you feel more than welcome. I will certainly go back when I return to Costa Rica.
About the Host, James
My wife Bibi, and I have operated a bed and breakfast for more than six years. It has been an interesting experience. I am reminded of the saying by the Irish poet, W. B. Yeats "A stranger is a friend you have yet to meet." We have met many strangers who have become our friends.
