About this listing
Relax + soak in the gorgeous rice paddy views + traditional Balinese village life from this lovely house located just outside of central Ubud. You have the comforts of a modern home but can see the nature and beauty all around you from the balcony.
Nestled amidst the green hills of Ubud in lush natural surroundings, “Kubu Rama” is a place of comfort and relaxation. The villa is blessed with an unobstructed view of the rice fields, Balinese temple and jungle from its breezy balcony, where you can enjoy the sunset and watch the famous white heron birds fly past on their route home to nest. If you are lucky you can also see the resplendent blue Javan Kingfisher fly by. Night time brings a chorus of nature sounds from the paddy fields and the magical glow of the fireflies. On festival days you can hear the sounds of Gamelan music and chanting echoing across the night from the nearby village.
Kubu Rama also offers a comfy living space. The house is equipped with high speed wi-fi internet, 29" inch TV and home theater system, parking space, wide balcony with incredible view, spacious garden and sun bathing area, air conditioner in the bedroom, full kitchen facilities, drinking water, linens provided, hot water with bathtub and rain shower heads in semi-open air bathroom. All this plus daily cleaning service by the wonderful Sutri and assistance from Kadek living off site nearby in the village, but able to help with anything should there be a need.
The villa is situated in a quiet setting down a small path and away from the main road, but in a spot where you can see Balinese cultural/natural life come to life in rice harvests, temple ceremonies, children flying kites, and duck herding, all from the comfort and privacy of home.
You have the house to yourself! Kadek the house manager lives in the nearby village just a few minutes up the road, and Sutri comes to clean regularly or on demand. I am living in a house about 5 minutes away by motorbike but often traveling so you can reach me on email or (website hidden).
Interaction with Guests
I will try to come and say hello if I am around in Ubud, but since I travel often I am reachable always by email or phone and Kadek the house manager who lives in the village nearby will be there to welcome you to the house and assist should you need anything during your stay.
Kubu Rama is located in a traditional Balinese village setting just outside of central Ubud in the hamlet of Kutuh Kaja. There are several small Balinese restaurants serving tasty food within walking distance, a pool at the next door villa where you can swim all day for a very small fee (possibly a pool for the house sometime in 2016!), laundry place, and the village also has several convenience shops. The Ubud Botanical Gardens is almost across the street. You are surrounded here by endless rice fields and you can see various stages of the harvest from the comfort of the house balcony, including the antics of the famous ducks. If you are lucky enough to be staying at Kubu Rama during a Balinese ceremony the streets and temples of the village will come alive with the colorful offerings, traditional costume and dance, and enchanting sounds of Gamelan music, sometimes late into the night. Very lovely area indeed.
The house is located about 3km from Ubud town center which is about 5 plus minutes ride by vehicle or 20 plus minutes walking through lovely Balinese rural scenery and traditional village life. Please note there is no public transportation just as in any of the small villages outside Ubud - so motorbike would be the best way to get to and from town. Motorbike in general is the best way (most economic and enjoyable) to explore the Ubud area on your own - we can help to arrange rental, it is very inexpensive. We can also help to arrange very reasonably priced taxi service. Bicycle is also possible and can easily be rented in Ubud town. It takes probably 10 plus minutes to reach town center on the downhill by bicycle, but longer on the way back as it is a gentle slope upwards the entire way. It is recommended only for the fit because of the tropical heat. We can help to arrange also airport pickup and day trips with polite and relaxed English speaking drivers.
Other Things to Note
Please understand that at Kubu Rama you are not in the busy densely populated Ubud town center. You are living in a nature place, surrounded by rice fields and small jungle in complete privacy, but with easy access to the town. That is the beauty of the place, and we try to provide as much modern comfort as possible within this environment. That being said you may see some various animals and insects during your stay, some beautiful to behold (keep an eye out for the amazing turquoise blue Javan Kingfisher streaking across the green the rice fields from the balcony) and others not as lovely (ants maybe?). You may possibly hear movement or animal calls at night - maybe it's an owl or a gecko from outside, or a cat in the roof at night (we have methods to reduce or eliminate unwelcome visitors while still maintaining harmony with the natural surroundings - explained upon arrival), but most often the day is bliss and night is very peaceful - no sounds of motorbikes or city, or even neighbors - it's just the beautiful chorus of crickets and frogs as your lullaby.
Because this is a private house and not a functioning hotel, we do ask that you report any maintenance issues you encounter as soon as possible to us, so we can arrange for a technician to come and fix it. We do not have a handyman on call 24 hours, but we have many contacts in the nearby villages, so we try to arrange them to come at the soonest possibility should there be a need. We try to have backup plans in place (i.e. back up portable internet modem and room air cooler/fan), so there is an alternative just in case any mechanical item temporarily goes faulty, which does naturally happen from time to time - although for sure we do our best to maintain these items in good condition and fix them as soon as any problem is revealed. Thanks for your patience and understanding.
We hope that you understand these conditions before making a reservation and if you feel you might be sensitive about them, you may prefer a proper hotel in the Ubud town center. But if you feel you want to be in a beautiful, natural environment, full of peace and tranquility, and immersed in the heartland of Balinese culture, then please welcome to Kubu Rama and we will do our best to take care of you during your stay.
Respect the peace, nature and culture in the area. Please smoke outside only. Thanks not to bring outside guests exceeding the reservation booking.
Personal rice paddy view. No other bungalows visible from the balcony. Only a special temple to the Dewi Sri, Balinese goddess of the rice fields.
Everything was very accurate here. So lovely and fully equipped. But it's a bit far from main road: it took us around 20mins to walk or paid 50,000IDR for one-way taxi.
Shakar had his staff to greet us and always gave swift answers whenever I texted.
Kubu Rama was the perfect base for us in Ubud. Shakar was a fantastic host, kept in constant contact right from the start. He arranged last minute transportation for us from Seminyak to Kubu Rama with the wonderful and bubbly Kwi.
Kadek, the house manager is just absolutely amazing. He was there to greet us and show us around the house, was only always just a message away and when I forgot my phone, he went above and beyond and mailed it to me in the most timely manner.
Kubu Rama itself is only a short 5-10 minute scooter ride down to the centre of Ubud. A fabulous warung just 5 minute stroll (delicious local food at Made Becik). A gorgeous view with a great lounger for chilling on the verandah and the most memorable outdoor shower.
We had a terrific time! For these who are not naturally inclined...there are a few ants and crawlies as to be expected in a property in the middle of the rice fields. Mossie coils are provided and take it from me, by the second night you'll not notice them. Please do not let that deter you!
Thanks Shakar and Kadek and their team for such a memorable time in Ubud!
This place was amazing. We weren't able to meet Shakar, but he quickly responded to any of my concerns. He also offers pickup which I'd take cause the place is a bit hard to find. It's private and quaint, peaceful. You get the ducks in the day and the fireflies at night. It's great. The house manager was also very helpful and scheduled us for a motorbike. The restaurant in front has good cheap food. It's not that far from town and only took about 15min to get to the monkey forest and about 20min to get to the waterfall. I highly recommend staying here. Can't wait to return.
We had a nice stay at the residence. It's quiet away from town with a nice view. Its not a new house and the air con broke which wasn't ideal. Very nice bathroom area and they looked after us well with scooter etc but we wouldn't stay again.
Well Michael thanks for the nice things you said about the house and our assistance to you during your stay in Kubu Rama. Too bad it was a very brief stay, because it did not give us sufficient time to correct the air conditioner problem while you were still here. It seems that issue tainted your enthusiasm a bit and we apologize for that.
As you know, mechanical things do sometimes go faulty. We found out about problem late at night on your first night (the previous guest who checked out that morning did not mention any issue), and we had a technician come the next day as soon as possible. Unfortunately he needed to get a specific spare part to fix the issue, and it was not available that day. He came back the next day to fix it but you were already gone.
Unfortunately as private house without 24 hour on call technician, we do the best we can to call in outside technical assistance quickly when we identify a problem, but sometimes have to wait as the person may have a religious ceremony or something else going on, which is a common occurrence in Bali. As an update, we have now completely replaced some of the components of the AC and it is working fine, and we do not expect any more future problems. We have also purchased a portable air cooler (like a mini air conditioner which runs on water) and a strong rotating fan as immediate backups should there be any issue. One other thing to note is that in most seasons except perhaps the heart of the rainy season, Ubud which is a hilly area leading to the slopes of mountains, stays quite cool at night, so often just opening a couple windows should keep the place cool and give you nice fresh air too.
Again we apologize for the inconvenience and are doing the best we can to make sure this kind of situation can be mitigated in the future. We do hope you guys come back to Ubud and Kubu Rama on a more fortunate occasion and enjoy a smooth and relaxing stay. Thanks!
The place was alright. At first view we liked it quite a lot. However the roof has to be dealt with. There are either rats or cats in the roof, not on the roof but in the roof. And they make a huge sound especially at night when you are sleeping you can get quite a shock from the noise. Of course the roof is closed so you dont need to worry about the things jumping down or anything but still. That should be solved quite fast.
Apart from that issue the place is very nice. We didnt meet Shakar but Kadek was very helpful arranging a scooter very quickly for us. I was a bit dissapointed when i asked kadek to arrange a driver for us from ubud to Tejakula and he did but for 700 thousand. We told him that was way to much and he manage to get us 650 which was still not acceptable. First webpage i saw on the internet offered it for 450 and worked perfectly...
View was very nice. Location is a bit off the center which is nice because you have the nice rice fielda around you and the calmness. However i advise to rent a scooter. Walking did not look very safe as there are no walkways.
If you want to find the place easy just put Sugar villas in google maps and its just before that.
Money value i would not recommend it. You can find better options for same price.
Where to start? My husband and I stayed at Kubu Rama for the first part of our honeymoon. Shakar was an excellent host and answered many questions prior to our arrival, arranged a driver to pick us up fromm the airport, and was responsive to questions throughout our stay. Could not have asked for a more helpful, kind host.
Once we arrived we were pleased to see that the photos were an accurate representation of the space. It was clean with fresh linens and towels for us to use. We arrived and stayed during an important festival but even still the house was cleaned almost daily (I think just one day it was not and this was fine with us). We enjoyed tranquil nights reading on the patio looking at the beautiful setting. The internet was a good connection and there was a DVD player in the house we used a couple nights.
In the mornings we would walk into Ubud - about 30 mins. We quite enjoyed the morning walk but by the end of the day we would hire a taxi to take us home. We paid around d 50k for the taxi home. For us, being outside of the busy town was quite desirable. We would eat dinner in town before coming back, but there was a restaurant we stopped in our first night right next door that was quite nice. The kitchen in the house had coffee and tea that we enjoyed in the mornings.
I can't really think of any negative things to say! It was a bit outside of town, but we knew that and liked that. The outdoor bathroom was gorgeous but meant you had to be willing to blur the lines between outside and inside (ie don't be surprised to see small lizards on the walls). All of this was expected and added to the appeal for us.
Many thanks, Shakar for all your help, advice, and for helping us kick off our honeymoon in such a beautiful and romantic place.
What you see in the pictures are what you get. Oh the ducks will greet you every morning and late afternoon. Though this location is a bit far from the main street, it is a good place if you want to stay away from the buzz of the busy street.

About the Host, Shakar
Hello and welcome to all those planning a trip to this beautiful village of Ubud. I have been living here already 10 years, and in that time I have also traveled extensively around the world. But I can honestly say that "home sweet home" is right here, surrounded by nature, art, and culture, on the island of Bali. And there is no better place to experience all this than right in the heartland of Ubud.
My life here is basically all about arts, culture, and nature. I enjoy taking part in many Balinese cultural ceremonies, and if you come and stay here you will be most welcome too, with traditional clothing to wear available to you. My house is close to the people in the village, but also in a very private setting with only jungle, rice paddy, garden around you. It's a simple and beautiful life.
If you come and stay at my place, I will also be happy to tell you all the good info about places to see around the island, amazing and delicious foods to eat, and whatever other insider knowledge I can offer to you. I love nature activities such as bird watching and exploring the undersea world, and I can let you know the best spots. But it may well be that you never want to leave the house because it is just so peaceful and delightful in these natural surroundings.
Looking forward to welcome you.
