Interaction with Guests
I will try to come and say hello if I am around in Ubud, but since I travel often I am reachable always by email or phone and Kadek the house manager who lives in the village nearby will be there to welcome you to the house and assist should you need anything during your stay.
Kubu Rama is located in a traditional Balinese village setting about 3 kilometers North of central Ubud, in the hamlet of Kutuh Kaja. It is a rural setting with lush beautiful scenery, but in the last years many conveniences have sprung up in the general area of the house. There are several small Balinese restaurants serving tasty food and healthy juices within walking distance, a spa for various kinds of massage, swimming pool at the next door villa where you can swim all day for a very small fee (possibly a pool for the house sometime in 2016!), laundry place, and the village also has several convenience shops. The Ubud Botanical Gardens is almost across the street. You are surrounded here by endless rice fields and you can see various stages of the harvest from the comfort of the house balcony, including the antics of the famous ducks. If you are lucky enough to be staying at Kubu Rama during a Balinese ceremony the streets and temples of the village will come alive with the colorful offerings, traditional costume and dance, and enchanting sounds of Gamelan music, sometimes late into the night. Very lovely area indeed.
Please note Kubu Rama is located amidst the paddy fields in the peaceful/traditional village area. It is simple to reach and just outside, but not directly inside the busy Ubud town center. Getting to the house is quite straightforward, an easy 3km north from Ubud main street - the location is very near to Ubud Botanic Gardens. The distance to the main road/town center area is about 5 plus minutes ride by vehicle, 10 minutes by bicycle, or 25 plus minutes walking through lovely Balinese rural scenery and traditional village life to reach Ubud town center. There are plenty of small restaurants and cafes to rest in along the way. Please note there is no public transportation (just as in any of the small villages outside Ubud) - so motorbike would be the best way to get to and from town. Motorbike in general is the best way (most economic and enjoyable) to explore the Ubud area on your own - we can help to arrange rental, it is very inexpensive. We can also help to arrange very reasonably priced taxi service from our local Balinese driver friends, which is on call at any time assuming the drivers are not busy, but better arranged in advance. Bicycle is also possible and can easily be rented in Ubud town center (we do not provide this service). It takes probably 10 plus minutes to reach town center on the downhill by bicycle, but longer and more effort on the way back as it is a gentle slope upwards the entire way. If you are reasonably fit you will be fine. We can help to arrange also airport pickup and day trips with polite and relaxed English speaking drivers.
Other Things to Note
Please understand that at Kubu Rama you are not in the busy densely populated Ubud town center. You are living in a nature place, surrounded by rice fields and small jungle in complete privacy, but with easy access to the town. That is the beauty of the place, and we try to provide as much modern comfort as possible within this environment. That being said you may see some various animals and insects during your stay, some beautiful to behold (keep an eye out for the amazing turquoise blue Javan Kingfisher streaking across the green the rice fields from the balcony) and others not as lovely (ants maybe?). You may possibly hear movement or animal calls at night - maybe it's an owl or a gecko from outside, or a cat in the roof at night (we have methods to reduce or eliminate unwelcome visitors while still maintaining harmony with the natural surroundings - explained upon arrival), but most often the day is bliss and night is very peaceful - no sounds of motorbikes or city, or even neighbors - it's just the beautiful chorus of crickets and frogs as your lullaby.
Because this is a private house and not a functioning hotel, we do ask that you report any maintenance issues you encounter as soon as possible to us, so we can arrange for a technician to come and fix it. We do not have a handyman on call 24 hours, but we have many contacts in the nearby villages, so we try to arrange them to come at the soonest possibility should there be a need. We try to have backup plans in place (i.e. back up portable internet modem and room air cooler/fan), so there is an alternative just in case any mechanical item temporarily goes faulty, which does naturally happen from time to time - although for sure we do our best to maintain these items in good condition and fix them as soon as any problem is revealed. Thanks for your patience and understanding.
We hope that you understand these conditions before making a reservation and if you feel you might be sensitive about them, you may prefer a proper hotel in the Ubud town center. But if you feel you want to be in a beautiful, natural environment, full of peace and tranquility, and immersed in the heartland of Balinese culture, then please welcome to Kubu Rama and we will do our best to take care of you during your stay.
Respect the peace, nature and culture in the area. Please smoke outside only. Thanks not to bring outside guests exceeding the reservation booking.
Personal rice paddy view. No other bungalows visible from the balcony. Only a special temple to the Dewi Sri, Balinese goddess of the rice fields.
Hello and welcome to all those planning a trip to this beautiful village of Ubud. I have been living here already 10 years, and in that time I have also traveled extensively around the world. But I can honestly say that "home sweet home" is right here, surrounded by nature, art, and culture, on the island of Bali. And there is no better place to experience all this than right in the heartland of Ubud.
My life here is basically all about arts, culture, and nature. I enjoy taking part in many Balinese cultural ceremonies, and if you come and stay here you will be most welcome too, with traditional clothing to wear available to you. My house is close to the people in the village, but also in a very private setting with only jungle, rice paddy, garden around you. It's a simple and beautiful life.
If you come and stay at my place, I will also be happy to tell you all the good info about places to see around the island, amazing and delicious foods to eat, and whatever other insider knowledge I can offer to you. I love nature activities such as bird watching and exploring the undersea world, and I can let you know the best spots. But it may well be that you never want to leave the house because it is just so peaceful and delightful in these natural surroundings.
Looking forward to welcome you.
