The Space

Clean, quiet and bright, shared bedroom in brownstone Brooklyn.

The space:

This shared bedroom has a keyed door for privacy, a twin-sized bed, a nightstand and dresser with hanging closet. There are three twin-sized beds in the room, so you will be sharing the bedroom with up to two other guests, of the same gender. This space is ideal for a traveller who plans to be out most of the day and would like a comfortable, safe and economical place to eat, sleep and shower.

Personal items are placed in lockable closets, for which a key is provided at check-in. Linens are professionally laundered and we provide towels. The room has three large, northern-facing windows overlooking a residential street with lots of trees. Large, bright common living room, two bathrooms and two kitchens are shared with the rest of the house.

The home:

This shared bedroom is on the top floor of a three-story, landmarked townhouse which was built in 1899. It is located two short blocks from the subway, just a 15 minute ride to Wall Street and 25 minutes to midtown. The house has plenty of historic charm, and lots of modern updates like updated kitchens and bathrooms, hardwood floors throughout, and convenient amenities like broadband WiFi and hi-def cable TV. A computer station in the common living room offers free internet access, and print services are available at a nominal cost.

Lastly, we have a centrally-monitored security system and the house is cleaned regularly by our housekeeper. We inspect every bed and room after each guest to ensure cleanliness, and all of our mattresses are protected by top quality mattress covers which are regularly maintained. Full service laundry available on site by request.

The neighborhood:

We are close enough to the city to be extremely convenient at any time of day or night. At the same time, our location offers the authentic New York neighborhood experience. Lots of cultural, entertainment and culinary options to experiment with. We're a short walk to Prospect Park and the Brooklyn Library, Zoo and Museum as well as great bars, restaurants, shops and cafes.

The people:

Most of our guests are young professionals and international travelers. Many of our guests are in NY for work or school. We have had visitors from every continent and we will be delighted to help orient you in the city which we love so much.

Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns, or if you would like help or suggestions about planning your trip to New York. Thanks!

  • I spend six weeks here and had a great time at Alex's place! Apart from the fact that after construction not everything is finished off perfectly and although the kitchen is a little tiny, the rest of the house is very spacious. Sharing a bedroom with three was thus not a problem at all and I would even recommend it because you come into close contact with the roommates. Apart from this bedroom there were 4 other roommates living in 4 private rooms. All were very nice and friendly; the atmosphere in the house is fantastic. The location is also good; nearby subwaystation, laundromat (with friendly employees who conveniently let you use the weighting scale for your luggage :) ), supermarket and a great bagelplace (Lula bagel). The atmosphere in the neighborhood is interesting and nice too; a combination of residential and shops, Jamaican kind of feel and upcoming hipster. More importantly; I've always felt safe. Also the communication with Alex was great; he was very easy to reach, helpful and flexible. I would definately recommend it!

  • It was great to stay at Alex's place. The living room is spacious, roommates are amazing and warm enough during the winter days. Alex is mostly on downstair at his office and very communicatable.

  • I had an excellent time at Alex's place. It was extremely convenient to book and Alex responds quickly. I booked the room the day before I was to move in. Alex is extremely flexible and accommodating, especially when I lost my key, and when I needed to extend my stay. The location isn't necessarily the best, and I often saw policemen on the neighborhood corners when I walked home late at night. That could be a good or bad sign; but I never had any issues. The house is a few blocks from the subway and about a 20 minute commute to Manhattan. Inside the house is nice and clean. All housemates were really interesting, social and respectful. I had a room that I shared with 2 other girls but there was plenty of space. The price is a bit steep for me, which is why I left but it's a good deal considering no lease needs to be signed and it includes utilities and furniture. I would highly recommend.

  • I had a really nice stay at st johns place! it is exactly as everyone else already discribed.. i came to new york without knowing anyone and was very happy to have a roommate who explored the city with me the first days... It takes some time to get to manhattan, but the subway is very near to the house and there is a laundromat directly next to the house and also a market. All the roomates got along very good!
    Thank youu :)

  • I've been staying at Alex's house in Crown Heights everytime i visit, and each time is even more pleasurable than the last! I should have written this review YEARS ago, but the place really speaks for itself; The rooms are spacious, it's a clean environment, and if any issues ever arise, everyone does their best to rectify it. The location is PERFECT. Multiple subway stops, right near the Brooklyn gardens, museum, Prospect Park, and up and coming Franklin Ave. (visit the wonderful Crown Inn, Breukelen Coffee House and Installation clothing store!)

Thank you Alex and everyone there! I can't wait to see you again this year!!!! Yes, i will be back :) See you in the Summer!

  • I stayed in a room for three with a friend for 21 days. You live in a beautiful typical house, the house has 5 double rooms or individual that make your stay more fun because you can exchange information with other guests, the people that stayed at the same moment with us were very interesting and sociable, we made friends with some of them. Alex is an incredible host always willing to help with whatever.

Everything is great at home, as shown in the pictures.

The only thing is that it takes between 30-45 to get to Penn Station and Times Square, I did not mind because I was 21 days and the price is the best I found.

  • The house at st johns place is -really- nice for someone who would like to spend a couple of days/weeks/months with some nice people at a affordable price. I shared a room with two girls with no problem at all. The kithen upstairs is small, but works fine for basic cooking and such. It takes some time to get into manhattan from corwn heights depending on the traffic at the sub (and where you're going), but all in all, you get a great housing for a good price.

Alex is a really great host, and helped me when needed. I'd recommend this place any time!
