Charming cottage with small yard and sweet garden tucked away in the quaint hamlet of Smallwood, 1 mile from White Lake and 5 miles from Bethel Woods, in the Catskills. 1 1/2 hours from George Washington Bridge, Manhattan. 100 miles from Midtown.
Cozy up to the fireplace on a cool evening. Large country kitchen, wireless and basic cable tv. Bring your cell phone but check first to see if it works in our area.
The small yard/garden attracts humming birds, dragonflies, butterflies, and chipmunks. From the deck you can watch the family of deer in the woods across the road. (Last summer they added twins). A stream runs through the property.
This is the perfect retreat setting for a writer, musician, artist, or other creative people who are looking to get away. It's private, yet not secluded as neighbors are nearby. It's especially quiet during the week.
Access to a beach at Mountain Lake is limited to guests staying a minimum of 4 weeks during July and August. Nominal membership fee is not included in rental.
However open access to Toronto Reservoir beach for guests staying any length of time. There are no facilities, just a porto potty.
Grand Lake Superior is also a lovely spot to spend the day picnic or BBQ. Outdoor shower and amenities. Rental of paddle boats too. There is an entrance fee.
White Lake for boat rentals.
Ice skating on Gabriel Lake at the end of the street in winter months.
Queen size bed, new firm mattress in main bedroom.
Small Twin, new firm mattress in second bedroom.
Cottage sleeps 2 adults only and one child. We are very strict about this.
No pets, we are very sorry.
Ceiling fans keep kitchen, living and master bedroom cool in summer.
"Friends" just around the corner, serves burgers, basic American fare and an astonishing array of local and international beers. Live entertainment on summer weekends too.
Lakeside eating at White Lake and Kauneonga Lake a 10 minute drive.
Shop-rite in Monticello, 7 miles away.
Shop-rite in Liberty, you can order online and they will deliver.
Plenty of local farmers markets for fruit and veggies are a drive away.
Antique stores and plenty of yard sales.
There is golfing and horseback riding nearby and of course swimming at the Smallwood Lake (Mountain Lake), Toronto Lake Reservoir, Grand Lake Superior, and you can rent boats at White Lake.
In Smallwood itself, there is not a lot to do, except relax and swim, BBQ, watch the birds and the bees, walk around the lake, and picnic at Minnie Falls. We love it.
Bethel Woods, site of the 1969 Woodstock Festival.
Dancing Cat Saloon, offers live music/entertainment and events, food, wine and beer. Distillery as well.

Lakes and lakeside restaurants. Antiques. Bethel Woods Performing Arts Center, 5 miles from cottage.
You do need a car.
However, buses leave from Port Authority in NYC to Monticello. Cabs can be caught and/or ordered from the bus station in Monticello. About a $20 cab ride to Smallwood. Groceries can be ordered online and delivered in time for your arrival. "Friends" restaurant is within walking distance. Off season, check their schedule.
Other Things to Note
Please practice water and energy conservation.
(Though the well water is uv'd and filtered, we do not drink it nor cook with it as it sometimes has an odor. We recommend you buy bottled water as we do). We try to leave unopened bottled water to set you off.
Cottage can sleep no more than 2 adults and 1 child.
We are very sorry but no pets, no parties, no guests, no loud music, etc. -- neighbors are close by. Please refrain from any activity that offends or disturbs neighbors or interferes with their quiet enjoyment.
No smoking indoors, out on deck ok.
We welcome mature, responsible guests.
Please present current photo id upon arrival, and leave us an emergency contact number. Thanks!
We cannot be responsible for any items that are lost, stolen or abandoned. There will be a $25 shipping fee deducted from the security deposit for any returned items.
A $25 fee will be deducted from security deposit if keys are not returned.
When you leave please make sure that all doors and windows are securely locked and lights, heat and water pump are turned off. The cottage must be left the same as you found it. Rearranging furniture is not permitted. All trash removed from the cottage, dishes washed and put away, all floors vacuumed/swept, and any breakages reported. Thanks!
Smallwood does not have garbage collection so take it with you when you depart. There is a recycling station in Monticello where it can be disposed of.
It is recommended that for extended stays you secure a Tenant's insurance policy which will protect your belongings.
We have a dog, and though we clean thoroughly, allergies may be a problem. Again pets are NOT allowed, we are very sorry.
The cottage is a private residence and no portion may be sublet. We reserve the right to inspect the property during your stay. (We've never had cause and don't expect to). One of the closets will be used to store our personal belongings.
The garden and lawn will be maintained by a gardener (probably me) every two to 3 weeks, but for week long stays, we'll work around your vacation. For longer stays, we'll give you notice.

I love Smallwood! My new hobby when I'm in the country is gardening, back breaking but oh oh, so rewarding. I love to travel too, but I also really enjoy my home, and love the location. I adore dark chocolate, and my little dog. Not necessarily in that order..
