Enjoy the natural beauty of one of Costa Rica's best-hidden secrets, mountain paradise Copey de Dota. Copey is a small town where you can relax, watch quetzals, and hike in a secluded mountain town off the tourist track. Live and eat with a traditional Costa Rica family.
The house is located right in the middle of town. It is a medium-sized home with four bedrooms. Mila and Alvaro have lived in this house for nearly 20 years. They currently live there with two of their daughters and their grandson, ages 22, 12, and 3. There is a communal living room, kitchen and back porch where the family enjoys cooking, hanging out, and watching TV.
We charge $30 per person to stay, which includes three meals/day - breakfast, lunch and dinner if you are interested in eating with us.
Guests are welcome to use any amenities in the house, listed in the amenities section. The family will be happy to help you find or access other services during your stay.
Interaction with Guests
In this house, the guest is treated as part of the family and is welcome to interact as much as they want. We often have family parties or barbecues and guests are welcome to participate. However, the family is also respectful of guests' need for privacy. You will be well taken care of, even if you don't speak Spanish. The family has hosted many volunteers and non-Spanish speaking visitors in the past.
Copey is a typical Costa Rican town. If you are looking for a place where you can truly get to know the Costa Rican culture and integrate with a family, Copey is the town for you. The town is surrounded by a forest reserve and is a wonderful place to go hiking or birdwatching.
There is a bus to Copey that leaves three times per day and costs just $1.00. The bus goes to Santa Maria, a larger town with more services like restaurants and stores. Santa Maria is two hours south of San Jose and can be reached by bus (MUSOC line) for $4.00.
We ask that guests do not smoke in the house. We also do not allow pets in the house.
