A Quintessential Santa Barbara cottage in the heart of downtown Santa Barbara built in 1915. The rooms are rather small (Think Parisian Hotel) but well-appointed and quaint: a place to hang your hat, charge your phone, rest your fee, set your glass and simply relax. The Living Room is intimate. Think of this space as a private parlor car in a train, perhaps, perfect for reading! The more spacious backyard is perfect for sharing stories, relaxing and unwinding around the fire pit and cozy sofas.

The space
I have traveled all over the world collecting books and unique and interesting artifacts but it is Africa that has stolen my heart and because the house is Victorian, I've chosen to bring in the African Colonial influence into the decor so that I am reminded of my safari bush trips every day. An African Safari is probably the most remote vacation you could imagine and because I wanted guests to have a true "get away" experience, you'll see this influence in all of the rooms including Masai Shukas scattered about. Everything in the house has a story and a special meaning to me so if you're up for some good stories, I can tell you some!

Great for guests who want to experience a genuine downtown local experience. One block from the Saturday Farmer's Market. Two blocks east of State Street and Joe's Cafe (highly recommended), French Press Coffee, theaters, shopping...
The back yard is the sanctuary and my favorite place to take afternoon naps under the wisteria.

My travels around the world have taken me to some incredible hotels and I owned and operated a yacht charter business for 12 years (as Chef, Steward, First Mate and Cruise Director, taking guests to the from the Channel Islands in five star luxury so attention to comfort is of upmost importance to me. The house is equipped with a full kitchen, quality linens, thirsty towels, comfortable rugs and furnishings, and if you've forgotten your toothbrush, razor, sunscreen, hair dryer, or shaving cream, you don't have to walk the one block down the street to the store.

There are bicycles (and helmets/locks) for your use, a BBQ for backyard entertaining, a Bose portable music system that connects to your music library so you can have your music in any room, a game table for an impromptu chess, backgammon, or card game, and a new TV with Netflix and Wi Fi.

Guest access
Two blocks east of State Street, the heart of Santa Barbara, theaters, shopping, restaurtants, etc...and a short walk across the railroad tracks to the Funk Zone and the Urban Wine Trail. Ten minute walk to the beach, or you can catch the Electric Shuttle on State Street that runs every few minutes. From the house, you can literally walk anywhere you will want to go (including grocery provisioning). No driving or Ubering necessary. This saves time, money, fuel and energy that might take away from your valuable vacation time!

Other things to note
As mentioned, parking is challenging. There is one space (it's very small, perfect if you drive a Mini Cooper, still works for a small SUV). Back in 1915 when the house was built, it was more than enough for four horses. The neighborhood is far enough from State Street to be on the quieter side and except for the occasional Mexican Karaoke wafting over from the next door neighbors (that makes me smile, actually), you're likely to hear only a bit of street traffic.

Santa Barbara has implemented strict regulations on short-term rentals but because the house is located in a commercial zone, I have secured the required permits. It is perfect for a long term stay because of its central location, but also great for a weekend getaway!

The neighborhood is wonderfully eclectic with small houses on one side of the street, small businesses on the other, and only two blocks from State Street. One block down is a Smart and Final, perfect for grocery runs and there is an Office Max next door to that. One of the best neighborhood street taco places is around the corner on Haley Street. My friend, Jill (Jill's Place) is one block up and pours one of the best martinis in Santa Barbara (The strongest ones are one block west, at Joe's). Our Farmer's Markets is one block north on Saturday mornings! There is really too much to list. Safe to say you don't have to walk more than two blocks to get the juiciest organic peach, a massage, manicure, haircut, new chic bikini, pint of Guiness, movie, ice cream, espresso, retail therapy and steak dinner. (Temporary Covid-19 closures have shut down restaurant dining, but there are still very good local restaurants within walking distance offering take-out!)

I am an Architect and own and operate my small firm on the same block as the Petite Maison. I have lived on my boat, Aurora, a classic wooden Grand Banks Pilothouse Trawler, in the Santa Barbara Harbor for 18 years. I am lucky enough to be able to walk to my office with my big white dog, Brigitte, who is lucky enough to lay in the bay window all day watching the world go by while I carry on, working tirelessly to support her passion for marrow bones. In my next life I want to be Brigitte. Don't get me wrong, I love my job. Sometimes, though, sitting in a bay window eating marrow bones sounds really cool. When I'm not working, you might find me behind my keyboard playing in a local bar with my all girl rock band, Midnight Mynx.

During your stay
My office is right up the street so I am almost always available. I have lived in Santa Barbara for 33 years and know it well so if you want to know where to eat, drink, and have a good time, it's likely I will know about it.
