If you are considering a move to Panama, your hosts would be happy to answer questions and give you some "insider" tips.
If you wish, you can arrange to take a course in silk painting with Barbara, an artist/teacher in Boquete (rabkindesign). You may also wish to take one of Mort's artisan bread baking classes. See boquetebread for info about his Boquete Artisan Baking Seminars. Mort, known as The Rye Guy, sells his fine breads at Morton's Bakehouse (opened October 2013) .
We and Maggie, our
sweet Labradoodle, look forward to welcoming you as our honored guests.
See our many glowing reviews. Our guests often remark that we have thought of every detail a visitor might need to make for a truly comfortable stay. We are proud of that!
Barb and Mort could not be more gracious! We never wanted for anything the entire trip. Great recommendations for food and activities and the Casita is well equipped and comfy. The Cottage by the River is ideally suited to wandering the village of Boquete and within easy walking distance to everywhere.
We had a wonderful time at the Casita! Barbara, Mort, and their dog Maggie were very welcoming and charming. You can tell they love hosting travelers and have a wealth of knowledge about the area. Barbara was able to make some suggestions for activities based on our interests and they were perfect for what we were hoping to accomplish. The property is accurately described; we especially enjoyed falling asleep to the flowing river outside and watching the birds around the garden. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a quaint place to stay in a great location just outside of the main strip in Boquete.
Barbara and Mort are awesome hosts! We loved Maggie their beautiful and friendly labradoodle, who always welcomed us so happily making us feel at home. The place is lovely and sleeping with the sound of the river is very soothing (our 3 and half month baby loved it). Mort brought us some of his delicious bread from his bakery. Very clean, very well equiped with everything we needed and more. Highly recommend staying at "la casita" location couldn't been better. Looking forward to stay there again in the future.
Cottage by the River is most certainly that! When we arrived our senses were delighted by the sights, sounds, and smells of Barbara and Mort's beautiful casa, the lovely river which is right next to the cottage, and the gorgeous vegatation and lanscaping on their property. The room had everything you would like for a stay there, including comfy cotton robes, which were a very nice touch, to be able to slip one on in the morning and sit on the porch listening to the song birds, and watching the river babble along while sipping delicious coffee.
We stayed in many places during our scouting mission to Panama to find the area we want to live, and I have to say, the bed in the cottage was the most comfortable of every bed I slept in in Panama! One of my soundest nights of sleep was at Cottage by the River. Mort shared a great loaf of his famous rye bread, and Barbara offered many suggestions of places to go and eat. For the record, if you plan to be there on a Tuesday, be sure to check out the local "farmer's market" in town. We brought home some wonderful pieces of jewelry and world-class coffee beans! Breakfasts at both Sugar and Spice and Punto de Encuentro (Ogla's) were AMAZING, and we also enjoyed the food and expat community at Mike's Global Grill.
Barbara and Mort's casa truly is one block off the main street in downtown Boquete, and we did not have a car there. Everything is walkable within minutes and the town is so fun! We took a walk up through Valle Escondido and took in the sights of the beautiful homes there. There is some traffic noise because their casa is literally steps from the main street, but the sounds of the river really mitigated the traffic noise and it didn't bother us a bit.
We would highly recommend a stay at Cottage by the River. Barbara and Mort are very nice hosts, with lots of helpful information about where to go and what to see. We hope to return to Boquete soon!
Oh, and their dog Maggie was a sweetie, and always greeted us at the gate!
Barbara and sweet Maggie welcomed us at the gate when we arrived on a very rainy evening and graciously invited us to join her and Mort for some appetizers after we dried off and got settled. We took their advise and walked around the corner to Mango's restaurant for an outstanding, creatively-prepared meal on their covered patio. We found the Rabkin's beautiful "Mermaid" casita cozy, comfortable, and outfitted with every convenience for our three night stay (microwave, toaster, coffee maker and coffee, small refrigerator, towels, robes, dishes and silverware). There are flashlights, umbrellas, and a local cell phone for use as well. The casita is situated on a lovely little creek in an upscale neighborhood just one block off the main street of town. We did not have a car and found it very easy to walk to everything we needed or take a taxi to outlying places like Morton's Bakehouse and El Explorador Jardin. The night before we left we enjoyed a cozy fireside dinner with the very progressive and accommodating Mort and Barbara who answered our questions about the area shared a few insiders tips. We will definitely be returning and also recommending Cottage by the River to our friends and family. - In addition, we recommend visits to Mango for a romantic meal, a tour of the small organic coffee farm Finca dos Jefes, rugelach and breads at Mort's shop, Supermercado Romero for groceries, and Sugar and Spice Bakery for soups, sandwiches, quiche and takeout.
The reservation was canceled 109 days before arrival. This is an automated posting.
My husband and I live in Boquete, Panama - a charming town in the coffee growing region of Panama, not too far from the border with Costa Rica. We moved here with our sweet dog Maggie, a Labradoodle, and embarked on a great retirement adventure - improving our Spanish, learning about the wonderful Panamanian culture, becoming "inn keepers" in the process.
I make and teach art in my art studio. I give classes on silk painting, and also do watercolor, acrylic and work with polymer clay. The setting here in Boquete is so stimulating and inspirational - such an array of colors. Mort, an attorney, is known as The Rye Guy. He bakes the most incredible artisan bread in a wood fired clay oven that we built! Our new bakery, Morton's Bakehouse, opened in 2013. Sign up for a bread class at the bakery!
We enjoy welcoming visitors to our Cottage by the River, sharing information about life in Panama and insider tips about Boquete. Because our home is in town, we can walk to the market, restaurants, cafes and shops. And when the wood oven is fired up, we enjoy having our friends drop in for some fresh bread or a pizza.
