About this listing
Suite of rooms in large flat (300m2) in 19th century "palacete"; delicious breakfast; everything in walking distance, but quiet street. No extra costs (apart from airbnb's!)
Exceptional suite of rooms available in my flat. Delicious breakfast (fresh pastries from local bakery brought in) included and varied day by day according to your preferences.
The flat is very large: 300 m2 (3300 sq.ft.), and right in the heart of old Madrid, on a quiet side street just down from Puerta del Sol and Plaza Mayor. Nearest metros: Tirso de Molina and Sol. The building is a mansion (small palace) from 1840 which was a theatre for a time and was completely restored to the mid 19th century style ten years ago. You would share the kitchen with us, and have full access to WiFi. Otherwise, the set of rooms is complete, although not separate from the rest of the flat. The bedroom, while not large, has everything you need: it's quiet, has a European-size double bed, window onto a light-filled outside stairwell, 3-door wardrobe and kettle & tea. The bathroom in the photo, with freestanding bath with feet and shower is for your sole use, as is your 22 m2 (237 sq.ft.) drawing room. There is central heating throughout, with magnificent cast-iron radiators and an adjustable thermostat in your drawing room. Thanks to the flat's size you would be pleasantly independent, although feel free to ask me for information about shops, what to see, etc in the area, which I know very well. We have 2 beautiful and extremely sociable marmalade cats (who succeeded in "curing" a lodger catphobe!) Non-smokers please. Parking has to be paid for (we're not in the historic quarter for nothing!): 24 hours in next street up, calle Relatores, in a privately managed garage is €27.10; if that's full, you have the big car park under Plaza Jacinto Benavente which is the same distance from our flat and costs €28.90 for 24 hours.
Unfortunately, neither access to the building nor the flat's design are suited to visitors with physical disabilities.
As well as your own rooms - bedroom, bathroom and sitting room with 2 balconies onto the street, you are welcome to use my kitchen, and I will make space for you in the fridge. You are welcome to eat other meals as well as breakfast (which I will serve you) in the dining room, next to your bedroom. There is WiFi throughout. There are 2 entrance doors, one of which is right next to your bedroom, so feels more private, but you can use whichever you prefer.
Interaction with Guests
I live and work in other parts of the flat, so can be available for help as much or as little as you wish!
This is the heart of old Madrid. We have Plaza Mayor, Sol, La Latina, the 3 great art galleries all right on hand.
Very close to Sol, which has commuter train connections and metro. Do-able (but uphill) walk from Atocha terminus station. I'd take a taxi (very inexpensive in Spain) but many of my guests walk it! Once you're here, you'll walk everywhere: the only key place not in walking distance is the football stadium! Several car parks around (not cheap: around €30/day). If you're here for a while, I might be able to negotiate you a rental in the large private garage on our street, almost opposite the flat.
Allergy sufferers need to know that we have 2 lovely, friendly cats, but thanks to high ceilings and the flat's size, you should be all right for a few days. We would prefer you not to smoke in the flat. If you're here to brush up your Spanish, we can talk to you in castellano; in fact, there's even a language academy in the same building!
No rules: just be as you would wish others to be in your home.
We are ideally located both for the "Golden Triangle" of art (Prado, Thyssen and Reina Sofia)and for great nightlife (there's a back door you can use for late night/early morning returns). No bars on our street, and the guest backroom is very quiet.
You'll have a great time in a superb location and I will be around as much or as little as you want for a chat/tourism advice, etc.
En fantastisk lejlighed med en hjælpsom værtinde i en utrolig godt placeret kvarter. - vi havde et vidunderligt ophold på 5 dage med lækker morgenmad.
You can't underestimate how important having a safe and beautiful place to stay is when on holiday - staying at Henrietta's flat certainly made this clear to me! It made myself and my friend’s experience of Madrid even more wonderful. The flat was exactly as described and presented on the post – clean, classy and quirky interior in a perfect location.
Henrietta as a host was also wonderful – she provided great advice about things to do and concise information of how to get around prior and during our stay. The hearty breakfast we received from her every morning was more than enough to set us up for the day ahead. She was also a friendly, interesting and easygoing host who made us feel welcome in her home.
Henrietta’s flat is a true airbnb gem!
We had a very nice stay in Madrid. The location from Henrietta was really perfect for us - because you can reach everything very easy most of the time walking distance. The home from Henrietta is very, very nice in the historic center of madrid. Henrietta is a very nice an helpful person - she was always interested to help us - gave us very good tips - were we should go. Even her cats are really funny :-) The house is very clean and we had a lot of space there. We got every morning a different breakfast - it tasted very good. So we can rally recommend this place to every visitor who whant´s to be in the town :-) We will definitely come back :-) Thank you so very much for your hospitality at your place!
As first time airbnbers we couldn't have been more happy with our 5 day stay at Henriettas apartment. It was very easy to find, and a wonderfully cool and peaceful respite after our journey. It is perfectly located for exploring all Madrid has to offer. We walked everywhere - galleries, museums, parks, plazas, tapas bars, markets. But if you wanted to go further afield the metro is just a short walk away. Henrietta was a great host both before and during our stay, including helping us find out about the Mercado de Motores at Delicias (flea/craft/food market second Sunday in month - highly recommend). As previously mentioned the bedroom is small but the bed was very comfortable, even for my 6' husband, and we enjoyed chilling out in the roomy guest lounge at the other side of the apartment. It was very hot during our stay so we were grateful to be able to help ourselves to chilled water from the fridge. Henrietta kindly accommodated an early breakfast for my husband who was there on business. The bathroom is down the corridor via the dining room, we didn't, but if you mind these things you may want to bring a dressing gown. The cats are lovey, but only attentive if you want them to be. It was a real treat staying in such a beautiful building, in such a great location, with such a lovely lady. Thankyou Henrietta.
Thanks to a fabulous host I enjoyed three fabulous days in a fabulous apartment, in a fabulous historical building within fabulously easy reach of fabulous art galleries in a fabulous city.
Thank you, Henrietta: your sunny personality and attention to detail helped to make my Madrid trip as enjoyable as it was.
About the Host, Henrietta
Although I'm English, I've been living in Spain (Barcelona and Madrid) for half my life, so that must make me "bicultural"! I hosted for a few years, enjoyed it, and am returning to it after a work-related break. I love the opportunity it gives, as a host, to meet the widest range of people, with all sorts of interests and profiles. Madrid is a great place for a holiday - it can be as relaxed (all-day tapas, siestas) or as lively (bars & clubs everywhere, except for my street fortunately) and as cultural (I'm really close to the 4 major galleries) as you like. And for football aficionados, well, it's obvious! I would be delighted to give as much or as little guidance as you want to have. Come & stay!
