About this listing
Set of rooms in large flat in 19th century "palacete"; delicious breakfast; everything in walking distance, but quiet street. No extra costs (apart from airbnb's!)
Exceptional set of rooms available in my flat. Delicious continental breakfast (fresh pastries from local bakery brought in) included and varied day by day according to your preferences.
The flat is very large and right in the heart of old Madrid, on a quiet side street just down from Puerta del Sol and Plaza Mayor. Nearest metros: Tirso de Molina and Sol. The building is a mansion (small palace) from 1840 which was a theatre for a time and was completely restored to the mid 19th century style fifteen years ago. You would share the kitchen with us, and have full access to WiFi. The rooms which are exclusive to you are dotted around the flat and your bathroom is not ensuite. The bedroom is not large, but has everything you need: it's quiet, has a European-size double bed, window onto a light-filled outside stairwell, 3-door wardrobe and kettle & tea. The bathroom in the photo, with freestanding bath with feet and shower, is for your sole use, as is your 22 m2 (237 sq.ft.) drawing room. There is central heating throughout, with magnificent cast-iron radiators and an adjustable thermostat in your drawing room. Thanks to the flat's size you would be pleasantly independent, although feel free to ask me for information about shops, what to see, etc in the area, which I know very well. We have 2 beautiful and extremely sociable marmalade cats (who succeeded in "curing" a lodger catphobe!) Non-smokers please. Parking has to be paid for (we're not in the historic quarter for nothing!): 24 hours in next street up, calle Relatores, in a privately managed garage is €30; if that's full, you have the big car park under Plaza Jacinto Benavente which is the same distance from our flat and costs about the same.
Unfortunately, neither access to the building nor the flat's design are suited to visitors with physical disabilities and the bed is a bit short for people over 6 foot 3 in, although many tall people have stayed in it happily.
As well as your own rooms - bedroom, bathroom and sitting room with 2 balconies onto the street, you are welcome to use my kitchen, and I will make space for you in the fridge. You are welcome to eat other meals as well as breakfast (which I will serve you) in the dining room, next to your bedroom. There is WiFi in the front part of the flat. There are 2 entrance doors, one of which is right next to your bedroom, so feels more private, but you can use whichever you prefer.
Interaction with guests
I live and work in other parts of the flat, so can be available for help as much or as little as you wish!
Allergy sufferers need to know that we have 2 lovely, friendly cats, but thanks to high ceilings and the flat's size, you should be all right for a few days. We would prefer you not to smoke in the flat. If you're here to brush up your Spanish, we can talk to you in castellano; in fact, there's even a language academy in the same building!
No rules: just be as you would wish others to be in your home.
We are ideally located both for the "Golden Triangle" of art (Prado, Thyssen and Reina Sofia)and for great nightlife (there's a back door you can use for late night/early morning returns). No bars on our street, and the guest backroom is very quiet.
You'll have a great time in a superb location and I will be around as much or as little as you want for a chat/tourism advice, etc.

Although I'm English, I've been living in Spain (Barcelona and Madrid) for half my life, so that must make me "bicultural"! I hosted for a few years, enjoyed it, and am returning to it after a work-related break. I love the opportunity it gives, as a host, to meet the widest range of people, with all sorts of interests and profiles. Madrid is a great place for a holiday - it can be as relaxed (all-day tapas, siestas) or as lively (bars & clubs everywhere, except for my street fortunately) and as cultural (I'm really close to the 4 major galleries) as you like. And for football aficionados, well, it's obvious! I would be delighted to give as much or as little guidance as you want to have. Come & stay!
