This stylish, bright, and comfy basement apartment is within a 5-minute walk to IU campus. It's in a suburban neighborhood with beautiful full-grown trees. Within 10 minutes of Kirkwood and the town square and adjacent to the Beautiful Bryan Park!
Cook your own meals in this fully-functioning kitchen with pots, pans, microwave, bread machine, etc.
Enjoy Bloomington and get a fantastic basement apartment all to yourself! This private apartment is a recent addition to my house, located in older suburban neighborhood with big beautiful trees! (Please note that since it is downstairs, you can sometimes hear the creaking of furniture, footsteps or faint voices from above.) It is within walking or biking distance to campus, Kirkwood (the fun, trendy street with great shopping and restaurants), and Bryan Park (complete with lots of green space, and a big fancy pool). You can park in my driveway, and you are about a 5 minute walk from catching the Bloomington Transit anywhere you need to go.
There is a common entry in the "mud room." You'll then head down a short flight of stairs to get to your apartment. The apartment has a very comfy Queen sized bed that can sleep two, as well as a sleeper sofa in the living room that can also sleep two. (If you don't like sleeper sofas, I also have an air mattress I can bring down.) There is a large walk-in closet, and also a smaller one. You'll have access to your own personal washer and dryer, and you're also welcome to borrow a bike. Feel free to hop onto my wireless internet. You can prepare all of your meals in your own kitchen! It comes complete with microwave, stove, pots, pans, dishes, and everything else you will need to cook with. There is a small dining table and a desk to do work on. Heck, there is even a dart board!
You'll stay in a clean, colorful house with a gracious host who lives right upstairs, and who can direct you to all of the fun things Bloomington has to offer.
You will have access to a personal kitchen, bathroom, washing machine and dryer, and bedroom. You also have access to my wifi.
Interaction with Guests
I always make every effort to meet guests to check them in on the first day of the stay. If check-in is very late, or I simply cannot get away from work to let you in, I will leave the key in a secure location for you to access when you arrive.
The space is private, and guests may only ever see me if they happen to be exiting through the mud room at the same time as me. I like to respect people's privacy, so I won't be knocking on your doors unbidden, and will not be in your space as you occupy it unless there is an emergency, or you ask me to. However, I live right upstairs, and I am happy to respond to any questions or concerns as soon as I am able. Because I work long hours, the best method of contact is to text or call my cell phone. I will respond as soon as I am able, and always within a few hours.
There is no curfew, but please be sure to enter quietly if you come home after 10pm, and please take care to be quiet as you go down the stairs into your apartment. The entry is shared with the upstairs. There is a bedroom upstairs that adjoins the "mud room", and if you are loud, you may wake someone. You'll enter the house through the "mud room," and please take your shoes off there, so that the space stays clean. Please respect the space by cleaning up after yourself, doing dishes, etc. If you have extra time, pulling the sheets off of the bed and dropping them in the laundry for me on the way out is very helpful, as I often have to clean and launder quickly between tenants.
I stayed for 3 days/2 nights. Due to busy schedules, I didn't actually meet Sandy until the second night. She was very welcoming in person. She also checked in with me periodically with texts to see if I needed anything.
When we did meet, it was clear she and her partner were people that I would like to hang out with. We found we shared a common interest in films and they even invited me to select movies from their own collection to watch. Sandy also makes the most amazing lemon bars I have ever tasted!
The space is as advertised--cool, bright, and hip. I felt right at home.
Sandy was very welcoming and I had an excellent week-long stay while attending a workshop at IU. The apartment was comfortable and very well kept, just as the pictures show, and the kitchen was quite handy. Sandy was careful to check in with me periodically to find out if I had any needs and to make sure that all was satisfactory. The campus is easy walking distance, and the separate entrance to the apartment meant that I could come and go according to my own schedule without feeling intrusive. A great place to stay if you're looking to be near to the IU campus.
Staying at Sandy's apartment was a very positive experience. Sandy made us very welcome, and was available when we needed anything. The location is perfect for visiting IU. It is also convenient to be close to Bryant Park and the new Bloomingfoods. We are likely to stay there again.
Our host, Sandy, could not have been more gracious. All communications were timely and we felt completely welcome and attended to. The basement apartment is bright and cheerful and pleasantly appointed. Also, immaculately clean, which was a pleasure. Another reviewer had mentioned the overhead noise--which, in the basement of an old house, is inevitable--but we didn't find what little signs of life we heard above us to be intrusive at all. The only drawback to the entire experience was the odor, especially in the foyer but throughout the basement more faintly as well, of cats perhaps mixed with some must or mold. Perfectly understandable for a basement the owner of which has two pets, and it would have not been so much of an issue were my companion not allergic. But Sandy had warned us and we chose to stay there, anyway. The air felt better the second day after I had opened one of the windows for twenty-four hours. All in all, it was a positive, congenial experience, and I can warmly recommend it. Thanks, Sandy!
I enjoyed hosting you. Just wanted to clarify a point, which is that the mud room is really an entryway into both the upstairs and the basement. It's where we take shoes off and store them, and because of that, the mud room can sometimes smell faintly like shoes, and sometimes I use a glad air freshener because of that. Your comment proves to me that I should do that all the time!) :) The actual living spaces once you enter the apartment are completely cat and mold free, although the air can get stale if windows are never open, much as it might upstairs as well. The best remedy is to open the windows for awhile to get fresh air in. Thanks again for being such great guests.
Sandy was an excellent host; friendly, helpful and accommodating. Her basement apartment had everything we needed. It's very close to campus and downtown. I would definitely recommend her place to anyone staying in Bloomington.
Sandy was wonderful. The place is beautiful. It is in a perfect location--easy to get to everything in Bloomington! We could not have had a better time!

Hello! I am a dance studio owner here in Bloomington, and also work at a local nonprofit. I live with my partner Brenden. I am a friendly, social person, and have always loved hosting people in my home. I love hiking, and I can give you tips about fun places to explore. I am into music and dance, and can definitely give you the low down about nightlife here in Bloomington.
I have actually done more travelling abroad than here in the U.S., but I am looking to change that. I really want to see Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon, and the beautiful national parks in Utah.
I am an avid reader, and read every single day. Some of my most recent favorites include Life of Pi and Middlesex. Feel free to borrow a book while you are visiting.
I am happy to either be hands-off and give you privacy, or else to hang out with you in the main space. I am a busy person, though, so you may find yourself with a lot of quiet relaxation time.
