Allen is a great host! He truly enjoys hosting and knows alot about the area. The property is about 15-20min away from LaFortuna "downtown" and, in some instances, through some rural roads, so I would highly recommend a 4x4 vehicle. Unfortunately for our 2 night stay, it was pretty cloudy and rainy, but the views were still great. I could only imagine how incredible it is on a clear day. Allan arranged dinner one night for us and the couple in the suite upstairs for $18/pp. It wasn't bad and the portions were huge and included desert. Not sure if it's worth the full price but you do pay for convenience of not having to drive into town in the night. One thing to mention is that besides an outdoor table, there is no communal space. Breakfast is cooked and sometimes served in the suite upstairs which has a full kitchen and a huge dining table, but is occupied by guests. We didn't mind, but then again, we weren't staying in the suite upstairs. If you stay here, have Allen take you to Charlie's next door. He has all types of animals and offers horse rides.
Allan is a great host! He wants to make sure you have a good time, and will connect you with any number of guides and activities at your request. The property is beautiful, well kept, and the view unparalleled! The road up to his house was recently done and is in pretty great condition, so don't pay attention to the reviews that warn you about it.
Great stay, and our only regret is that we didn't spend all of our time in Arenal there.
(Oh, and the breakfasts are delicious!)
This place was gorgeous. I will say that my partner and I had a difficult time finding the place and that the signs indicating the Birdsong Villa are less frequent than I had expected. If you are not comfortable driving up VERY steep mountain roads this will be hard to get to. Because we had such a hard time getting to the place we were a half hour later than we said we would be. Allan was not there to meet us, but instead a neighbor gave us the key to the place. Luckily my partner is fluent in spanish or we could have been really lost. Like I said the place was beautiful, but it would have been helpful to meet with Allan beforehand just to ask basic questions, like if we had access to cookware (there is a litte kitchenette. As far as I could tell, there wasn't a jacuzzi or it was in disrepair, but it's possible that we could have missed it. Again, it would have been nice to get oriented to the place when we arrived. Breakfast was nice and the staff was very nice. Overall, it was a good experience, but a little pricey for what we got.
Allan was a great host and the property was better than advertised. Allan showed us a few fantastic places to eat and recommended some fun activities in the area. 4x4 is mandatory to get to the property. It is listerally at the end of the last dirt road. :) Fantastic views of the volcano and Lake Arenal. Good breakfast, good hike on Allan's property, and the highlight of our 9 day trip to Costa Rica. Directions to the property were tough to follow but that's not Allan's fault. Costa Rica has no addresses so directions to anywhere can be tough to follow. Feel free to contact me if you have any other questions about the property.
Allan is a really great host. We stayed in this room our first night and then moved up to the top room. Both rooms had gorgeous views of the lake, jungle, and volcano. Breakfast was delicious, too! Have Allan tell you about Pizza Jon's!
