My husband and I loved our stay at Birdsong Villa. The views from the upper bedroom are incredible -- great for a honeymoon stay. But the view from the more modest lower apartment is not too shabby either!! Hard to beat the beauty of this location. Allan was very gracious, welcoming, and easy to get in touch with, and he provided tons of tips on what to do in the area -- we were sorry we had only booked one night! We chatted with Allan over a delicious dinner cooked by a charming local couple (do not miss this-- it was the best food we ate all week), and the next morning we woke up early with the sun and immediately started birdwatching -- we were amazed at how many animals we saw during our brief stay! Monkeys, toucans, hummingbirds, parrots, iguanas... and more on our hike through the Arenal National Park.
The house is in the middle of a jungle, but it has some great amenities. This place is great for those seeking to escape the touristy areas and relax in a jungle paradise. Definitely would advise renting a 4-wheel drive vehicle -- the roads are steep and could get muddy during the rainy season.
Hands down the best place we stayed during our whole week in Costa Rica!
We loved Birdsong Villa. We went for our Honeymoon and fell in love with this wonderful retreat. Waking up every morning to this spectacular view was an experience we'll remember for the rest of our lives. Allan was a great host and provided us with lots of insider advice on where to go and what to see. Definitely get him to tell you some of his stories. All the meals we had at Birdsong were delicious and we definitely recommend having dinner prepared during your stay.
The location of the villa is wonderful with great volcano view, but don't expect a sterlie house. Unfortunately the volcano is not active anymore for more than 2 years now, what I didnt know (no lava, etc. to be seen)! Please note that the villa is close to La Fortuna (Entrance of Arenal National Park) and "far away" from Monteverde, where I thought it is located when I booked it :)
Its a good location for activities in the Arenal area: We did the hanging bridges and the zip lining tours, what we really enjoyed.
Allan arranged a dinner for us in our villa, with a cook from the village (very cute old tico couple). This was very delicious (18 USD per person)! Please note that also the breakfast will be cooked in your flat.
Allan is always around and can help you planning your tours. He even joined the breakfast and dinner.
My boyfriend and I along with another couple spent 3 nights at Birdsong. It exceeded our expectations with its 180 degree volcano and lake views and own private waterfall and river.
Allan, our host, was very attentive and provided many excursion suggestions. We really enjoyed our hike to cerro chatto followed by tabacon hot springs, a five star day! The following day, Allan helped us arrange a white water rafting trip as well.
We took full advantage of having the cook serve us breakfast and two of our three dinners, the food was fabulous and it gave us a chance to practice and learn some Spanish!
Also, be prepared for a few bugs. You'd have to be pretty silly to think there'd be no bugs near arenal. However there's nothing too extreme.
Overall we had a fabulous time at birdsong. We'll be suggesting it to any of our friends traveling to Costa Rica. Birdsong offers a private jungle experience at a very fair price! Big Al is a fantastic host and knows how to live Pura Vida!!!
The property is gorgeous, and the view of volcano and lake - breathtaking. We were two couples and rented the entire house. In the mornings we would sit on the patio below and bird watch while having coffee - just perfect. The property gets a great breeze in the morning and evenings which was much appreciated since it was very hot during the day down below. We hired Allan's chef to make us dinner at the house - I definitely recommend doing that (the garlic fish was delicious). The breakfast that was included was delicious as well. There's a private 25-min hike to a waterfall that was nice. Allan was not present during our stay but his manager took care of us and was very prompt in responding to my emails. The strong wifi connection & extra clean towels were pluses. I did want to mention that there were a lot of bugs (in the kitchen especially) when we arrived and perhaps that isn't typical, but there were ants all over the kitchen counter that we had to clean (and got bites from) and lots of fruit flies (some even inside the fridge). We killed a lot of bugs the first night but after that the bug situation seemed to improve. The rest of the house (besides the kitchen) was clean. The family taking care of the house (cooking and cleaning) is really nice. You definitely need a 4x4 to get here.
Overall we highly recommend staying at Birdsong.
I travel a lot and Birdsong Villa is easily the most beautiful place I have ever stayed. We had an very clear day, so were lucky to have a full and amazing view of the volcano. The 3 days we spent there were just unbelievable! Toucans flying across the window in the morning as the sun came up was a highlight. Allan sent us on some really great hikes and adventures. And Rancho Margot for dinner is a must! Allan was a great host.
A few tips:
1. Having a 4x4 is important. Its a rocky road up to the property and you will want to be free to get around to all the amazing places in the area.
2. The volcano is no longer active, but the lack of lava doesn't take away from the magic of the place at all.
We were just thrilled. Thanks Allan!
Waking up every morning to the sounds of howler monkey calls, surrounded by lush green hills and the Arenal volcano, is simply indescribable. The view from Birdsong is absolutely breathtaking, and Allan couldn't have been a better host. He called tour companies on our behalf (highly recommend the canyoning tour with DeSafio) and drove us to dinner at an organic farm, Rancho Margot.
Ask for a homecooked dinner ($18/pp) at the house one night by his cook, Milsa--it was easily one of the best meals we had during our entire time in costa rica. It's also worth waking up around 2am to step outside and take a peek at the sky--on a clear night, you can see so many stars; it's quite magical. The 30-minute drive up a dirt hill is quite a doozy, so make sure you have a 4x4!
Staying at Birdsong is the perfect blend of luxury and adventure. You're 20 minutes down a dirt road, but sleeping in a luxurious house, with breakfast from a private cook. We loved having breakfast with Allan each day, touring the gardens, and meeting the neighbors. Allan recommended several activities for us, and all of them were great. He knew the best massage place in town and set us up with rafting and zip lining. The house has binoculars so we could watch monkeys, toucans, and the steaming volcano from our window. We cannot overstate the beauty of the view from the house- you can see the volcano while lying in bed. There are a lot of hotels in the Arenal area, a lot of B 'n' B's, but this one is far and away the most luxurious and memorable. Go there- you won't regret it!
The birdsong Villa was one of our highlights on the costa rica trip. Allan was a very friendly and funny host, who helped us a lot. By the way: it is much better to have a vehicle when you live there.
