Tucked away at the base of the Warner Mountains in Surprise Valley, this pet-friendly cottage is nestled in the pines alongside Mill Creek in Lake City, CA.

The bedroom, with en-suite bathroom, sleeps 2 and opens out to a roomy deck for listening to the creek. The comfortable living room provides a futon for additional sleeping. The bright, airy dining room seats 2 and opens out onto the deck for wide mountain views. The kitchen includes cookware, dishes, silverware, microwave, and coffeemaker.

The space
Mill Creek Retreat in Lake City is located in Surprise Valley - California’s “Last Frontier”. Lake City is a quiet, small town with a population of about 100 people. Nestled up against the Warner Mountains, Mill Creek Retreat feels private and remote. This property, set back about 150 feet from Main Street, has an abundance of trees, seasonal flowers and fruit, old rock walls, and the beautiful Mill Creek running right through it.

The house is cozy, with an open and airy feeling on the inside. The custom-built redwood deck provides more seating and room for relaxing outdoors. From the deck there are countless paths for exploring, as well as a unique steel bridge that crosses the creek to an old orchard.

Originally built around 100 years ago, the Guest Apartment was once the main dwelling on the property. In the 1970s the much larger Main House was added on. The two homes are divided by a wall now, which separates them into two independent dwellings. The Main House is often rented out to visiting friends and family.

We strive to provide a safe and quiet environment for our Guest Apartment clients. Our Main House renters and visitors are chosen based on their careful consideration of our Retreat rules.

Guest access
Guests have access to the original house (known as the Guest Apartment), the deck and picnic table, the surrounding garden areas, the steel bridge, the old orchard, the parking areas and the driveway.

When arriving to check in, follow the sign to the designated Guest Apartment parking area. There is room for 2 vehicles in the area, with RV parking in the orchard if necessary. There are no RV hookups.

There are 4 steps up onto the deck from the parking area. Flood lights illuminate a portion of the driveway, parking area, and deck entry if you will be arriving after dark.

Other things to note
Mill Creek Retreat is in a very remote corner of California. Cell phone and Wifi service is sometimes good and sometimes nonexistent. Please be prepared for not being able to use your phones or laptops. AT&T does not provide service in this area. There is a landline telephone in the Retreat which can be used in case of emergency. The nearest hospital with staff is in Alturas, 30 miles away. Emergency services in Surprise Valley are provided by trained volunteers in our community.

Our weather is extremely unpredictable. Be prepared for snow, ice, hail, rain, fog, wind, and sub-freezing temperatures, which can occur any time of the year. Pack extra gear for warmth, as well as tire chains that fit your vehicle.

Stock up on food and supplies at Page’s Market in Cedarville. It’s the closest store.

Wildlife is abundant in Lake City! Bald Eagles, deer, squirrels, raccoons, skunks, coyotes, badgers, porcupines, owls, black bears, and mountain lions have all been seen here. In an effort to keep wild animals from getting into trouble, please do not leave any food outside overnight.

There is no enclosed fencing on the property. Wildlife and livestock may wander in. Pets may wander away.

Due to circumstances beyond our control, power outages in Lake City may occur for any amount of time. The landline telephone in the Retreat is available for contacting us in case the power goes out. However, occasionally the landline phone service also goes out.

Location

Lake City, California, United States

Lake City has quiet neighbors. Especially in the cemetery! We have the most beautifully-kept, tranquil, historic hillside cemetery you’ve ever seen. And when you venture up there, be on the lookout for panoramic valley views that stretch for miles. You may even be treated to a rainbow.

Our property sits alongside the opening of Lake City Canyon. Follow the dirt road up into the wild and scenic canyon by foot or by car. Four-wheel drive vehicles are recommended, all year-round. A few hardy cyclists have been known to enjoy this canyon road. The road leads over the Warner Mountains, but is not passable during the winter.

The streets in Lake City are well-paved for bicycling. There are no bike lanes, but the traffic is very light. Watch out for some of the innocent-looking inclines - they’ll give you a surprising workout!

With an elevation of 4600 ft., Lake City offers a variety of weather to enjoy. You can choose snow in the winter for sledding or snowshoeing, when our temperatures can range between -15 and 50 degrees. Or, choose our summers full of sunshine, which have been known to get over 100 degrees in July and August. Usually we are treated to a brief season of thunderstorms in the late summer, and these are legendary in their beauty.
