Many people come to the Puna district ( Kehena Beach, Kapoho, Pahoa and Kalapana) for the sunshine, peace and quiet, for nature walks, yoga and more. Coastal Puna is also known to have less rain than areas closer to Hilo.
Puna is also a great place to see the active lava flows and to see Kilauea Volcano , the Hawaiian jungles, tropical rainforests, beautiful coastal views, geothermically heated ponds, snorkeling.
We do not have mosquito problems because you are not next to a jungle. We recommend that you ask when renting a place.
This is also the place for water lovers and we have what you need : snorkeling equipment, boogie boards, noodles for your swimming pleasure... and did you know that the best and safest snorkeling area is just down the road in the Kapoho Tide pools?
You can easily navigate all of these places from Coconut Palms, it has come to be a very popular spot 'right in the center of all of these attractions'.\
Now, for those of you who are seeking night time entertainment, check out 'Uncles Tiki Bar' if you want to sip a beer and listen to live Hawaiian/Jawaiian/Country music..just down the road from us. Please keep the house clean, just the way you want it
This house was beautiful, there were 5 of us and it was the perfect size. We especially enjoy the kitchen, which was full stocked with pots, pans and all the necessary tools needed to cook all of our meals. The patio was nice and comfortable with plenty of patio furniture, this is where we ate most of our meals.
Neighborhood was quite and houses were very far apart. About 2miles from the house is a beautiful black sand beach... Good for snorkling, I recommend going in the morning (don't forget your flippers).
Have fun and don't pass up this beautiful home!
The host was polite and nice but did not see him much. He was
available if we needed him though. The house was basically what was
discribed and we thought it was good value for the price paid. It could
use a new stove and barbeque though and some better cooking utensiles. The house was in an area that was more of a rural setting and away from everything. This was not a negative thing as it was very quite and peaceful. A place where you could sit back and relax at. People in the area were also quite friendly.
This was an amazing home and the hosts were great. The home was located on one of the most scenic coastal highways on the big island and was about 1/4 of a mile from an amazing black sand beach. There are 2 thermal beaches and the tide pools which are great for snorkeling. The highway was canopied by beautiful trees. Coconut and mango trees were everywhere. Pahoa was a short drive and Hilo was about 45 minutes away. If we come back to visit I will most definitely request to stay at this home again. It was the right size for me, my ex-wife, our two children (9 & 11) and our niece. The roads were easy to drive on and the people were really friendly. If you are looking for a local flavor of living it the the best. It sure beats and resort or hotel. Its like living in a local neighborhood. People walking dogs and garage sales. And Andre was very informative about what to do and where to go locally. He was always available when needed. I only had one chance to talk with Susan and she was very nice and helpful also. Thank you Andre and Susan for an unforgettable Hawaiian experience.
The house very well matched the region in terms of feel: Kehena and Kalapana are some of the most authentic parts of Hawaii you'll ever find. I particularly enjoyed sleeping in the loft (the bit on the top of the house). It rained whilst we were there: the sound on the roof was soothing.
We had a wee (totally minor!) problem with one of the toilets: Andre was very responsive to this!
Great Accommodation! We especially loved the bedroom upstairs with oceanview. Clean. Well-equipped. Andre gave us a map with surrounding places of interest marked. Hosts live nearby and can be called if there are any problems (which we didn't need to). Quiet. Lanai is great for breakfast as you can see the sunrise and the ocean from there. We really enjoyed our stay there.
Andre met us at the house, coincidentally, upon our arrival. The house seemed much larger to me in person, than it looked in the pictures, which was great. The first floor has two large bedrooms, a full bath, and a washer and dryer. The second floor has a large kitchen and living room, a half bath, and opens out to a large outdoor patio. This is where we spent most of our evenings, listening to the crickets and enjoying the peacefulness. There is also a third level, which has a loft with lots of windows and a full size bed. We really enjoyed this room, although it is quite bright in the morning as the sun rises, as the curtains are very sheer. If you prefer something a little darker, I'd stay in one of the rooms, downstairs. I wasn't aware that the house also has a couple studios that the owners rent out, so you may or may not be joined on the patio by other people. didn't bother us, but something to note. The location of the house is pretty remote and the area is not very lit in the evening. The road (red road) is a bit tricky to navigate as well, and you need to drive pretty slow to get out of the area to pahoa or hilo. if you are looking for a very relaxing and peaceful and quiet location, this is it. we explored the area a lot during the day time. we went to volcano national park, hilo, the tiki bar not too far from the house, the farmers market on saturday, which is in the same location, as well as the black sand beach which is right across the road from the market and tiki bar. we also went to a lava tub just up the road at a really pretty beach park. this is a beautiful area of the big island and definitely worth visiting. it was very windy on the first couple days, and the power went out. it took most of the day for it to come back on, but it didn't matter, as we were out exploring during that time.
So sorry the power went out when you were here. We had a wind storm and every ones power went out for several hours. Welcome to Hawaii. It's like another world out here but I can't think of a better place to live. The beauty is 'stunning' and a place you will fall in love with - you may not want to leave!
