Description

The space

Please note: The photos are 4 years old from when we moved in and the house is now fully furnished (with upgraded beds etc. and an extra 25 square meters of living space that includes a home cinema).

Through a cool, bamboo-lined courtyard, you will find the entrance of the house, which starts with a modern, fully-equipped kitchen and inviting open dining space, and leads onto a smaller courtyard with a summer kitchen (gaz barbecue plancha and regular coal bbq).

The adjacent room (renovated in 2016) hosts a home cinema (55" 4K screen with 5.1 surround sound and hundreds of movies) and reading table. This is the coolest room in the house in the heat of summer with a great couch to nap on when watching the Tour de France (if you can watch a whole stage without falling asleep you'll win a free wine bottle ;)).

Featuring stunning original stone and wooden beam work the first floor boasts a beautiful master bedroom with a king size bed and a spacious, relaxing lounge-room. Equipped with comfortable couches and a large TV, the lounge-room space opens out onto a sunny terrace which can also be accessed from the front courtyard via an external staircase.

Two charming bedrooms, a study area and a modern bathroom (toilets on each of the 3 levels) occupy the second floor. There is a queen size bed in the second bedroom and a very comfortable daybed which can be converted into a double bed in the third.

Featuring a total of 3 bedrooms the house could in theory accommodate up to 6 people but we suggest a maximum of 4 guests for maximum comfort.

Guest access

Whether it be inside or out on the terrace, there is plenty of space for you to relax and be at home. All modern conveniences such as washing machine, dishwasher and microwave are available for use. Fresh towels and linen are provided and there is high-speed wireless internet throughout the house.

Interaction with guests

As much as possible we try to welcome you to the house in person which gives us a chance to answer the questions you may have about the region. We are also available on phone / email during your stay to answer any questions.

The neighborhood

A minute’s walk from the house you will find a public basketball court, an outdoor ping pong table and a boules court where you can join the locals for dinner and a game of pétanque every Wednesday evening during summer. There is also a tennis court (you can use our membership and we provide you with tennis rackets).

If you enjoy strolling, take a simple wander through and around the hills in any direction for however long and you will not be disappointed - stunning, vineyard landscapes at every turn. Wildlife sightings are frequent so keep an eye open for quails, pheasants and partridges who all love pecking through the vineyards.

--- To do and to see ---

We recommend the markets, cafés, restaurants, bars, museums, galleries and shops in Pézenas (10-minute drive), which is famous for its brocantes and lively art and music scene. All summer long the local wineries organise “Les Estivales” on Friday nights (8pm - midnight) with 1 euro wine tasting.
There is over a dozen different wineries accessible within a 30 minute drive around Nizas. A couple of them (Nizas, Fontes, Pezenas) close enough that you can ride your bike there (safer!).

The vibrant city of Montpellier is just a 45-minute drive or just over an hour by bus from Nizas. Two buses pass through Nizas to Pézenas daily (except Sundays and public holidays).

Our pick of local beaches, rivers, lakes, canals, barrages:
- Tamarissière Beach, Lac du Salagou (go to the presque isle for the best spots) and Barrage des Olivettes which are each within a 30 min radius of Nizas by car;

- The Etang de Thau where you can enjoy sailing, sea kayaking, windsurfing, kitesurfing and even scuba diving in Sète, Marseillan and Mèze (30 minute drive);

- Hérault river at Cazouls-d’Hérault for a dip (20 minute easy bike ride or 2 minutes drive);

- Abbaye de Gellone at Saint Guilhem le Désert (40 minutes drive) is one of Languedoc’s gems. It has been awarded the “most beautiful villages of France” label. The Abbey is also classed as a UNESCO World Heritage site by virtue of its position on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela, as is the nearby Pont du Diable bridge, considered to be one of the oldest medieval bridges in France;

- Cirque de Mourèze (30 minutes drive) and its medieval village;

- 1 hour drive away but not to be missed is a classified UNESCO World Heritage site, the "Grand Site du Cirque de Navacelles". It gets pretty busy in summer so go early if you can;

- Le Canal du midi (Le Somail) direction Carcassonne (1 hour drive).

--- Cycling ---

The house comes with 5 bikes for you to use (2 high end mountain bikes, 1 smaller low end mountain bike and 2 “all road” country bikes). If you need more bikes (or more specialised models) the Decathlon store in Montpellier (45 minutes drive - 1072 Avenue Georges Méliès Zone commerciale Odysseum) does all sorts of rentals. There are over 130 kms of sign-posted mountain biking trails for all levels starting directly from Nizas (+ an extra 110 kms starting from Bessilles - 15 minutes drive). This is a great way to experience the countryside and surrounding villages.

Cycling on the VTT-FFC track #10 via Pezenas is a great relaxed half-day trip (45km return) through the fields and vineyards. Stop over in Pezenas for French cuisine at Le Conti (27 rue Conti), Les Palmiers (10 Bis Rue Mercière) or sushi at Hana Sushi (1 rue Aristide Rouziere) and follow up with ice creams at Les Glaces De Sophie (16 rue Francois Oustrin, Place Gambetta) before heading back to Nizas.

Getting around

A car is highly recommended to explore the surroundings but in case you'd like to use the public transports, two buses pass through Nizas to Pézenas daily (except Sundays and public holidays).

Other things to note

Please note that mobile coverage in the village is a little light. Phones from the operator “Free” will have a little reception inside the house (top floor, in the bathroom and office) and “Sosh” or “Orange” mobiles will work from the village main plaza.

Our house is a typical french village house (built in 1818, modernised in 1920, extended in 1990 then completely renovated in 2013 and finally extended in 2016) which means that some of the door frames will be quite low and our top floor has a couple of low hanging wooden beams. If your are particularly tall (180cm+) please be aware that you will have to watch your head while walking on the top floor :)
Also the house is not well suited for toddlers. With 3 staircases and a terrace letting the little ones crawl around could be stressful for the parents.

In case our listing isn't available for your dates (or you simply wish to try something different :)) we can recommend the following listings in the region:

Pierre and Rachel have such a beautiful house in a charming village in France! It was a true pleasure to stay there - and they really made us feel welcome, by leaving food items in the fridge (since we were traveling to the house very late). They were available by phone for questions (we only had to call once) and had left detailed instructions for all of the kitchen equipment, etc., how to keep the house cool during the hot summer days, basically everything that we needed to know. We felt "at home away from home" ! The house is really beautiful, and comfortable. The decor is very beautiful, and there are lots of places to relax including a very pretty upstairs porch area. We found a lot to do in the surrounding area - running, biking, canoeing, and shopping in Pezenas. Pezenas is only minutes away. The only complaint that I would have is that the biking involved a lot of hills! But our AIr BNB hosts are not responsible for the hills! They left us some great bikes to use, which saved us a lot of money. That was especially appreciated. Pierre and Rachel set such a great example as hosts - staying there gave me a lot of ideas about how to be a better AirBnB host!

Pierre and Rachel were great hosts. Communication was very easy and they made it a great experience. Nizas is a lovely little village and the house was great - spacious and comfortable. It had everything we needed and more. We enjoyed out day riding their bikes along the coast. The Christmas concert in the village was also a highlight. Thanks for having us. We would definitely recommend it. There is lots to see and do in the area.

Our stay at Pierre and Rachel's couldn't have been better! Our hosts were very friendly and went above and beyond to ensure we made the most of our stay. We were able to accompany their randonnée group on a fantastic hike, and they have bikes that we were able to use for a few mountain bike excursions. Pierre was kind enough to show Jeff some of the local trails. Their beautiful home was recently renovated and very comfortable. There was lots of reading material and plenty of games and sports equipment for the kids to enjoy. The town of Pizas is very quaint and has a playground, tennis courts, library, and convenience store. Overall, we would highly recommend their home and can't wait to return to enjoy this lovely part of France.
