Chato Relaxo is beautiful! The pictures do not do the idyllic views you will have from those open windows justice. It is Haiti so don't expect five star accommodations but for the places you will find in Haiti, this is the best place we stayed at. The house is part of a secure complex, with very helpful staff to help facilitate your experience.
Dillon was amazing. He was fast to respond to issues we had and was helpful in connecting us to the services we needed. For instance, since this was our first time in Haiti, and we were driving from Port au Prince through the country, we did not plan the timing of our arrival well. It took us much longer to arrive at Labadee than we anticipated. We arrived at night and the road from Cap Haitien to Labadee is quite difficult - it is a dirt road, with many potholes and other challenges. It may be best to just fly into Cap and hire a driver to get you to Labadee. Once you arrive at Labadee you have to take a water taxi to Dillon's place. Since we arrived late, we had some problems with the water taxi. The drivers were asking $30 USD when it should cost around $5USD at that time of night. However, we texted Dillon and he instantly helped out with the situation (even though it was 10 at night and he was in Boston). We feel Dillon went above the expectations of what you should expect from an AirBnB host and really appreciated it (sorry for the troubles Dillon!). Once we arrived, we loved the place so much we actually changed our plans so that we could stay longer.
Another thing that really made Dillon's place lovely was the water taxi driver that he recommended - Geeto (I am probably misspelling this). Geeto was awesome. He speaks some English and since he did not have other commitments, we hired him to give us a tour of the Isle Amis and Cap Haitien. If you have the opportunity, we highly recommend you do this. Geeto is hilarious and really has a sense of how shape the experience towards your interests.
Finding Chato Relaxo was an absolute blessing and it was my by far, the best part of my trip to Haiti! The pictures do not do it justice whatsoever, the place is absolutely gorgeous! It was pure excitement arriving by water taxi and seeing the walkway up on the side of the cliff to arrive at the bungalow. It is situated down a path away from the main house so you have complete privacy and there is only the sound of the ocean an an occasional water taxi. With all of the doors open in the bungalow, there's a beautiful breeze, it's so airy and spacious. My favorite part was the wrap around terrace where I had more than enough room to do my yoga session and later read quietly in the cozy chairs with the beautiful view.
I had just missed Dillon so I did not get a chance to meet him but his parents were there and they were so pleasant and helpful with info on the area. Dillon and I kept in touch rather quickly via text, checking in to see that all was well. Their staff was very attentive to whatever we needed and brought us breakfast in the morning. They had a kayak that I used the next day for some time, which was an added bonus, and a great way to see the neighboring beaches.
I would highly recommend staying at Chato Relaxo, it left a lasting impression of Haiti for me.
I would suggest bringing some insect repellent and maybe a few snacks as there is no convenience store nearby. There is though a great bar/restaurant nearby on the beach with a nice sized group of people, not too crowded.
Thank you once again Dillon! I will def be looking you up again the next time I'm in Cap-Haitien!
Chato Relaxo was absolutely amazing. The view was beautiful, the space was clean and comfortable, and the breakfast was delicious. The photos don't even do the place justice - it is far more beautiful in person. Even though Dillon wasn't there, his parents made us feel welcome and answered any questions we had. Before arriving, Dillon had arranged a driver so that we could go to the Citadel and have transportation to and from the airport. There was also an informative welcome guide to read once we arrived at Chato Relaxo that helped inform our stay. We ate dinner both nights at Belly Beach and the food was great. I would highly, highly recommend this place!
We had the best time at Chato Relaxo. Dillon’s parents were amazing hosts. Their staff made us feel right at home and helped us plan various outings in the surrounding area. Their Chato faces out over the ocean and is walking distance to some of the most beautiful beaches we have ever been to. The food was great, the people were amazing, and the whole experience was just perfect. Dillon was a great help--very quick to respond to questions and has a wealth of knowledge about things to do and places to stay in Labadee and the surrounding area. Haiti was a vacation we will not soon forget!
Close your eyes and imagine the sound of waves and a warm breeze at your face. In front of you is crystal clear ocean that seems to go on forever, with mountains and tiny islands everywhere. There is lush, immaculately groomed landscape all around you, from aloe plants to cacti to palms. You've finally reached nirvana. Now open your eyes. This is Chato Relaxo!
I can't say enough great things about our experience in Labadee and it is all thanks to Dillon, his family, and his gracious staff. We were warmly welcomed upon our arrival by his staff and they continued to take care of us until the moment we left. Breakfast was brought to our room every morning (you have to try Haitian peanut butter...so good), fresh towels were always available, and the bungalow was kept nice and clean the entire time. There was always someone nearby to help out if needed. There is a kitchen area with a fridge for your use, which was really helpful since we came with groceries. There are plenty of spots to sit and lounge around in (couches and comfy chairs both in the bungalow and on the deck). I loved the open air feel of the space. The bungalow is up on a cliff so it felt like our own little tree house. The area is very remote; other than the water taxi operators and tourists from the cruise ship (who only come twice a week), you'll be hard pressed to see anyone if you don't actually go into town. The peace and serenity was quite welcome after spending time in the much busier Jacmel and Port Au Prince areas. All you need to pass a day is a good book and your bathing suit. Dillon also arranged for us to see the Citadel (a MUST SEE if you're in the area), by private driver/guide. We took kayaks out to some nearby beaches. The views were jaw dropping no matter which way we were facing. Labadee is such a hidden gem. The beautiful, unspoiled area paired w/ Dillon's amazing property lended itself to an experience I won't soon forget. I suggest going while this place is still somewhat of a secret. Thank you for the unforgettable experience, Dillon - we can't wait to come back someday.
This place was wonderful! It was such a beautiful and relaxing home, overlooking the sea, with access to fantastic, quiet beaches. Dillon helped make all the arrangements to his place and then to the Citadelle and back to the airport. I've already recommended this listing to friends -- and I would certainly recommend it for you!
First off I'd like to thank Dillon and his family for sharing such a wonderful getaway on the north coast of Haiti! Chatto relaxo is definitely the best place you can stay in the Cap Haitien/Labadie area! And probably the best place you can stay in all of Haiti! From the lush vegetation to the pristine landscaped, cliff side property, their attention to detail can be felt everywhere! The chatto is beautiful and comfortable, clean and safe! The use of natural building materials, and the reclaimed doors and windows continue to inspire us long after out stay here! Although we didn't get I meet Dillon and his family, the local staff were some of the kindest Haitians I have met! They will be happy to help you with whatever you need! If you are arriving by car, there is a free parking lot right next to all the water taxis! If you are in the Cap Haitien area, be sure to book a few nights at this Chatto! It was truly one of my best experiences traveling through this amazing country of Haiti!
