About This Listing
Our cottage is a brand new, 400 square foot private getaway full of farmhouse inspired charm! It features one bedroom with a comfy queen size bed with handmade reclaimed wood headboard and a spacious armoire.
The kitchen comes equipped with a vintage 1960 GE refrigerator, 4 burner stove, toaster and microwave. It is stocked with cooking utensils and pots/pans should the need to whip up a meal strike you. We also have a French press, tea pot and blender.
The main room has cable TV and a futon that coverts into a full sized bed. Extra linens and a snuggly duvet are available. We also have a dining table for two and a full supply of glassware and utensils.
The bathroom is a full 3 piece washroom with roomy shower. The shelves are handmade from wine boxes and the hardware from galvanized steel!
Guests have their own dedicated space to relax and enjoy the beauty of wine country. We offer guests a complimentary bottle of wine (with a two night stay or longer) as well as all the supplies to make 'smores! In the outdoor space, guests can relax around their own fire pit or grill up dinner on their own BBQ. We will also be extending the use of 2 bikes for guests to use...the Sonoma plaza is a quick 2 mile pedal away!
Interaction with Guests
The cottage is located behind our home, so we are usually here to greet our guests and get them settled in. My husband, Alex, grew up right here in Sonoma and is so knowledgeable about the area. We love to provide guests with suggestions on our favorite wineries, shops, places to eat and things to do from a locals perspective!
The neighborhood is laid back and family oriented, and just a few minute walk to Maxwell Park. It is also conveniently located close to 3 grocery stores, restaurants (including a great Mexican spot with our favorite burritos and salsa verde) and a coffee shop, and is only 2 miles away from the downtown Sonoma Plaza. We are also located just a mile or so from the Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn, which has a fantastic spa that features thermal mineral pools unique to Sonoma (they do welcome day guests).
We do offer dedicated parking at the cottage. Having a car is the easiest way to get around but if you want to enjoy the MANY wineries in Sonoma without worry, there are a number of companies that offer car service (we would be happy to provide recommendations!)
We love our little cottage and ask that you please treat it well! We don't allow smoking inside the cottage, please. Also, as much as we love them, there are no pets allowed. Our home does share the space with the cottage, so we ask that guests keep music and voices to a reasonable level, especially when enjoying the outdoor areas.
When you leave, please tidy up. I don't expect the house to be sparkling (you are on vacation) but please try to leave the cottage as close to how you found it as possible. Dirty linens (sheets and towels) can be left on the floor. Please wash your dishes and put them away. Thanks!!
This was our first time in Sonoma and Annabelle's Cottage was the perfect place to stay. The cottage had one of the coolest interiors we've ever seen. Everything looked like a unique do-it-yourself project that you'd find on Pinterest or Etsy. Seriously - it was awesome.
The cottage itself is located in the backyard of Heather's house. Here, we met Heather and her lovely family while leaving for breakfast one morning. There were also two tiny pups inside that let us know they heard us when we left or came back. While it was no big deal for us, it's good to be aware of in case noise startles you. I'd also add how peacefully quiet the area was.
The location itself is about a two mile commute to the center of downtown, Sonoma Square. We got a cab when we wanted to go into town and were even able to grab an Uber, too. We found that Sonoma itself is pretty spread out when it comes to wineries, making it not-so-walkable from the cottage. However, as long as you know where you're going and have access to a cab company, you'll be fine. Heather provided a ton of recommendations to us for both and was super helpful along the way with anything else we needed.
We'd absolutely stay here again when back in Sonoma. Thanks for a great experience!
I absolutely loved the cottage! It was so clean and comfortable, like home away from home! I loved the style and all the little touches like the mason jar lights and the rustic wood pieces throughout the cottage. I wish my apartment was that cute! The back yard area was beautiful. You and your husband really put in a lot if work and it sure paid off! Looks like something you would see in a magazine! Well done! It was so great that heather had the bikes to use since she is in the perfect location, so close to everything. I had such a wonderful time! I hope to be back and stay with you again on my next trip!
Great little cottage, beautiful landscaping! We rode the bikes in to town for dinner, quick 10 min trip. We were pleasantly surprised with this place and Heather was very accommodating. Thank you for all the tips!
We had a wonderful time staying in Heather's Sonoma Cottage for part of our honeymoon! The cottage was adorable, very clean, and had everything we needed to get settled in for a few days! After a long day of wine tasting, we enjoyed heading back to the cottage to relax and make dinner for the night. The cottage was quick to get to Sonoma square as well. Communication with Heather was great. Thanks for a great stay, we hope to be back soon!
Heather was super welcoming and very easy to get ahold of the one time we needed something-to adjust the seats on the two awesome beach cruisers. The back yard where the cottage is located is absolutely beautiful. We used the two bikes, the bbq, dined outside on the lovely wooden table and even got a fire going in the fire pit. DO be aware that Heather has two small dogs that make themselves known. It wasn't a huge issue for us but just something to be aware of.
The cottage is small but was perfect for our "best friends getaway 2015". We would definitely come back!
Cottage was true to the listing -- clean and adorably decorated. There were several amenities we didn't have the time to take advantage of, including a fire pit and a grill. It was also well-located in Sonoma, not far from the Plaza and, of course several wineries.
There are a few cons worth noting:
- We never did meet the owner so, unlike others, I can't speak to her friendliness. While we appreciated being left alone, it was a little disconcerting that our stay wasn't acknowledged at all. Others noted a bottle of wine or s'mores ingredients -- we didn't receive anything like that. Just felt a little impersonal, given that we were staying 100 feet from their back door.
- As another reviewer stated, the bed was quite uncomfortable.
- As I mentioned above, the cottage isn't separated from the main house at all by anything other than the backyard. Not a ton of privacy for guests. I wouldn't have minded this if I felt like the owners acknowledged that we were there in one way or another -- the privacy is nice. But, I felt like we weren't supposed to be there or something, so it felt strange skulking around in their back yard.
- The backyard was also very messy during our stay -- it seemed like maybe they'd recently had a big party and not cleaned it up yet. I recognize that it's their backyard and probably none of my business, but given that the cottage isn't really separated from their backyard (we actually walked through the backyard to get to the cottage), I feel like it's fair game for the review.
- Finally, the owners also have dogs. We're very much dog people, so this didn't bother us at all. Until we met them. They were very aggressive and one bit my husband's pants. Fortunately, he was wearing thick denim, so the bite didn't break through to the skin, but it was close. After I sent my husband out of the yard quickly while I finished locking up, the other dog bit my luggage. Only after struggling through the yard, did someone finally come out to call them back in. I don't think it was Heather. At least, I hope it wasn't -- she didn't say more than 2 words to me and certainly didn't apologize for the dogs. A very unfortunate way to end our stay.
All in all, it was an OK stay, but the dogs can definitely be a drawback. I'm thinking in terms of our experience -- or lack of experience -- with the owner, we're probably an anomaly. The reviews here and in the guestbook in the cottage are littered with kind words about her hospitality -- we just didn't experience it. Next time, I'd probably shell out another $50 and stay comfortably at a nearby hotel.
I'm sorry you didn't feel like you really had the best experience at our cottage. Unfortunately, we had to leave town fairly suddenly for a family emergency and we not here during your stay. We had to make last minute arrangements for a friend to house/dog sit for us so that is why we didn't get the opportunity to meet you (or tidy up the yard!) That also might have been why the 'smores supplies weren't in the cottage (although we usually only do the bottle of wine for 2 night stays or longer). I'm terribly sorry about the dogs getting out and being aggressive - I think they were out of sorts with us being gone. As I hope you could tell from our reviews, we usually like to spend a little time with our guests and give them a great experience.

About the Host, Heather
I am a Florida girl who met and married a Sonoma native, and now we have the pleasure of raising our baby girl in the beautiful Sonoma wine country!
After our daughter was born I left my career in the spa industry to be a stay at home mom. Over the last 2 years I have gone from renting just the cottage behind our home to managing 5 additional properties owned by my mother and father in law. We have build our own little "cottage industry" (no pun intended!). It is truly a family affair and I am so lucky to be able to spend time with my wonderful daughter and still enjoy being in the hospitality business!
