Simplicity in paradise! Lovely homestay opportunity with an awesome young local fam and their two lovely kids. Close to some of the greatest beaches of the area and in walking distance to the sweet community of Playa Chiquita. Great deal!
EXPERIENCE THE REAL CARIBBEAN OF COSTA RICA IN THIS SYMPATHETIC LOCAL HOMESTAY / MINI-HOSTEL
This is the place of a super sweet local family that I have been friends with for over six years now.
They have a simple but beautifully authentic Caribbean-style double house, with one cabina with own bathroom and a small kitchen on one side, and two small private rooms on two floors with shared kitchen and shared bathroom on the other side. Big parts of the house have been newly renovated in the last 2 months, and the plan is to improve more details over the course of the next months.
The house is set in a beautiful, well-maintained garden in a quiet and safe neighborhood just 400 mts. from the small community of Playa Chiquita (with super market, some restaurants and a bar) and 400 mts. in both directions to some of the most beautiful beaches of the area (Playa Chiquita and Punta Uva). Puerto Viejo is about 6 km away and can be reached with an easy 30-minute bike ride or by public bus, that runs every two hours and stops just 150 mts. from the house. The nature reserve Gandoca-Manzanillo is about 7 km away and the popular Jaguar Rescue Center just 2 km.
This ad is for the small double room on the bottom floor with a double bed, mosquito net, a fan and some shelves. There is a shared bathroom with cold water shower and a shared outdoor kitchen (with roof) that is equipped with a stove, fridge, some pans and kitchenware for basic cooking as well as some seatings. The kitchen is right in front of the room.
If you are on a budget, are easy-going, nature-loving persons and would like to experience the real Caribbean and its people and share with like-minded travelers, this charming local mini-hostel (with just three rooms) is the place for you!
The family has two kids (6 & 11 years-old) and lives on the same property in the house next-door. They have been living in the area all their lives and are great sources of information all around the area, wildlife and local food and traditions. They and their family are passionate fishermen and will be happy to provide fresh fish and lobsters for reasonable prices every time they make a catch. They can also take you on private hikes, kayak tours and snorkel adventures for fair rates.
Wifi available in the room.
Laundry service 6$ per load (only washing, no drying)
Bus pickup service in Puerto Viejo: 8$ per way
They also offer shared lunch or dinner for very accessible prices, just ask them!
Interaction with Guests
The families English is pretty basic still, so you will need to apply your Spanish or hands and feet for communication most of the time :) I will take care of all your questions and arrangements prior to your stay and am happy to assist with any questions or problems during your time here (I just live 300 mts. away). I can also assist with your tour and transportation arrangements, should you need any help.

There is regular public transportation between Manzanillo and Cahuita. Best way to get around are bikes, that can be rented at our friends for 5$ a day.
The place is very clean and colorful. Rocio and Andre are very nice hosts. It is a plus if you speak Spanish, although I could make myself clear by using arms and legs :) You can rent bikes for almost no money. By bike you have easy access to Puerto Viejo etc... Anja is also very nice, reachable and helpful. Nice restaurants are close by. You sleep with the jungle noises... A dream!
We stayed for 2 nights and could have stayed more. We really enjoyed the place, close to a pretty beach, an easy bike ride to Puerto Viejo and next door to a great cacao farm tour. We used the nice little kitchen both nights and enjoyed the jungle surroundings. We can recommend this place.
We really enjoyed staying at the hernandez family's place.
It's very close to the beach and located in the bit more quiet playa chiquita. Anja was very helpful throughout the stay and replied fast if we had any problems.
You'll live very close with the other people staying there, which can be really nice and cosy (as it were for us), but mind that the walls are not sound proof so it can be a bit noisy sometimes and privacy can be a bit hard to get.
Note that the pickup service Anja offers is 8 dollars. Alternatively you can catch the bus towards manzanilla and get of at the chocolate farm in playa chiquita for 1 dollar pp. Over all; great place!!!:D we would definitely recommend :)
Great place and a very opportunity to meet a fantastic local family, los Hernandez. They are very cool to chat with and will tell you about the area but also about fishing. Andres the father is a fisherman, like his two brothers, and it's been going on for generations so if you are interested, take some time to get into a conversation with them. They're lovely. You can also buy some fresh fish of the day from the Hernandez and cook it! The accomodation was as described, very clean, shared bathroom and kitchen make for nice encounters. A peaceful and very humane atmosphere, I was sad to leave, felt like home.
We had an excellent time during our stay! The hosts, Rocio and Andrés, were beyond hospitable. They even invited us to their family's Christmas eve party and spent Christmas day with us at the beach, with an impromptu nature tour. We would never have seen so many sloths otherwise! We felt very welcome during our stay.
The room itself is quiet and nice. It's a short distance away from the nearby towns and secluded from the main road, which was great. The nearby beach was usually private and empty when we visited, and when we did want to go to town or the grocery store it was a short walk or bikeride away.
Anja was also very good at communicating with us and was helpful in picking us up from the bus stop when we arrived.
We would happily stay here again. It was a great, comfortable room in a beautiful area.
The Hernandez family were lovely and helpful. The cabin was very sweet, clean and I enjoyed using the open kitchen, and I loved waking to the howler monkies. Very near grocery stores and pretty beaches. They rented me a bike very cheaply which I used to get all around their community and to neighboring Puerto Viejo and Manzanillo. Anja and Mau made my stay really special too. I was traveling alone and they invited me out for beers and genuinely were concerned that I was having a good stay. They made suggestions that really worked out for me including a fun visit to the Jaguar Reserve (where a baby monkey jumped on my head) and a guide, Omar, who taught me so many things during a hike thru Manzanillo that I used the info throughout the rest of my trip in Costa Rica on my walks, spotting birds, wildlife, trees that he'd pointed out. In conclusion, if you are going to Puerto Viejo I would highly recommend these cabins and these interesting and sweet hearted people.
Upon arrival I was disappointed by the accommodations and there was a dog that was barking constantly. I politely told the host that I was unhappy with my room and was hoping for a refund. It was honestly like pulling teeth to get one. I would not recommend this room to anyone.
This client booked one day before arrival and obviously did not read the room description beforehand at all. Upon arrival he left his bags and came back an hour afterwards just to leave without saying a word. 1 day later he wrote an email asking for a refund. When asked what the reasons for his leaving were he said the room was completely fine, just not for him, later he said he didn't like the room at all, seemed like a very confused person to me. This place is a small, family-run homestay and we have clear cancellation policies, still I was very flexible offering a refund in case there was any failure on our side, which he said there wasn't. In the end I refunded the second night, just to not have to commit more resources to a client that had already meant loss to the host family. First problematic client in over 3 years of hosting, guess it happens sometimes.
