EXPERIENCE THE REAL CARIBBEAN OF COSTA RICA IN THIS SYMPATHETIC LOCAL HOMESTAY / MINI-HOSTEL
This is the place of a super sweet local family that I have been friends with for over six years now.
They have a simple but beautifully authentic Caribbean-style double house, with one cabina with own bathroom and a small kitchen on one side, and two small private rooms on two floors with shared kitchen and shared bathroom on the other side. Big parts of the house have been newly renovated in the last 2 months, and the plan is to improve more details over the course of the next months.
The house is set in a beautiful, well-maintained garden in a quiet and safe neighborhood just 400 mts. from the small community of Playa Chiquita (with super market, some restaurants and a bar) and 400 mts. in both directions to some of the most beautiful beaches of the area (Playa Chiquita and Punta Uva). Puerto Viejo is about 6 km away and can be reached with an easy 30-minute bike ride or by public bus, that runs every two hours and stops just 150 mts. from the house. The nature reserve Gandoca-Manzanillo is about 7 km away and the popular Jaguar Rescue Center just 2 km.
This ad is for the small double room on the bottom floor with a double bed, mosquito net, a fan and some shelves. There is a shared bathroom with cold water shower and a shared outdoor kitchen (with roof) that is equipped with a stove, fridge, some pans and kitchenware for basic cooking as well as some seatings. The kitchen is right in front of the room.
If you are on a budget, are easy-going, nature-loving persons and would like to experience the real Caribbean and its people and share with like-minded travelers, this charming local mini-hostel (with just three rooms) is the place for you!
The family has two kids (6 & 11 years-old) and lives on the same property in the house next-door. They have been living in the area all their lives and are great sources of information all around the area, wildlife and local food and traditions. They and their family are passionate fishermen and will be happy to provide fresh fish and lobsters for reasonable prices every time they make a catch. They can also take you on private hikes, kayak tours and snorkel adventures for fair rates.
Wifi available in the room.
Laundry service 6$ per load (only washing, no drying)
Bus pickup service in Puerto Viejo: 8$ per way
They also offer shared lunch or dinner for very accessible prices, just ask them!
Interaction with Guests
The families English is pretty basic still, so you will need to apply your Spanish or hands and feet for communication most of the time :) I will take care of all your questions and arrangements prior to your stay and am happy to assist with any questions or problems during your time here (I just live 300 mts. away). I can also assist with your tour and transportation arrangements, should you need any help.

There is regular public transportation between Manzanillo and Cahuita. Best way to get around are bikes, that can be rented at our friends for 5$ a day.
Through Anya we booked to stay with The Hernandez family. The family were absolutely friendly and welcoming, answering all our questions about wildlife and local spots, as well as helping us out with anything else we needed. On our last night of our stay they even invited us to have dinner with them, cooking is some fresh lobster they had caught that day. Delicious! We stayed in one of the upstairs rooms (they allowed us to swap rooms as we were the only visitors at the time) of the colourful and mosiac-covered complex they had built themselves. It was rustic and sweet, decorated with hand crafts the family had made. Towels and a mosquito net both came with the room. The open kitchen was equipped with a few odds and ends, as well as a bench and table, enough to cook a simple sit-down meal. We recommend hiring bikes for the day (available from the family) and going to Manzanillo for a walk in the national park and a swim in the sea. 10 minute walk to the shop for all your basic needs. Plenty of wildlife around, especially howler monkeys and numerous birds. Overall a lovely place to stay. Relaxing and comfortable with charming and flexible hosts (we asked to stay an extra night). Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for an authentic Costa Rican home stay.
Good room. Very nice family. A little far from the main town. But if you want to chill out its easy enough to ride bikes into town :) very nice surroundings. Wifi worked great. Very clean room
My girlfriend and I stayed at Hernandez place 3nights. Room is charming and looks exact like on picture. You can rent bike from family which was perfect to explore near by towns. We left after to Arenal and Antonio Manuel NP and rest of trip we were talking we should have stayed longer. It was perfect.Thank you for having us. Irena
Me and Jamie really enjoyed our stay. The place was so tranquil and a great place to relax. Although the weather was quite rainy we still had lots to do, visiting the jaguar rescue centre and the chocolate Tour just round the corner. The kitchen area with the hammock was lovely to chill out in, and the local restaurants that we tried were all great.
Anja was great at communication and the hosts were so friendly although our spanish is terrible!
It was also very easy to reach with the bus via Limon.
We would love to come back some time :)
The place is very clean and colorful. Rocio and Andre are very nice hosts. It is a plus if you speak Spanish, although I could make myself clear by using arms and legs :) You can rent bikes for almost no money. By bike you have easy access to Puerto Viejo etc... Anja is also very nice, reachable and helpful. Nice restaurants are close by. You sleep with the jungle noises... A dream!
