Private room shared bath+kitchen

House - Private room · Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, Limon, Costa Rica

Simplicity in paradise! Lovely homestay opportunity with an awesome young local fam and their two lovely kids. Close to some of the greatest beaches of the area and in walking distance to the sweet community of Playa Chiquita. Great deal!

The Space

This is the place of a super sweet local family that I have been friends with for over six years now.

They have a simple but beautifully authentic Caribbean-style double house, with one cabina with own bathroom and a small kitchen on one side, and two small private rooms on two floors with shared kitchen and shared bathroom on the other side. Big parts of the house have been newly renovated in the last 2 months, and the plan is to improve more details over the course of the next months.

The house is set in a beautiful, well-maintained garden in a quiet and safe neighborhood just 400 mts. from the small community of Playa Chiquita (with super market, some restaurants and a bar) and 400 mts. in both directions to some of the most beautiful beaches of the area (Playa Chiquita and Punta Uva). Puerto Viejo is about 6 km away and can be reached with an easy 30-minute bike ride or by public bus, that runs every two hours and stops just 150 mts. from the house. The nature reserve Gandoca-Manzanillo is about 7 km away and the popular Jaguar Rescue Center just 2 km.

This ad is for the small double room on the bottom floor with a double bed, mosquito net, a fan and some shelves. There is a shared bathroom with cold water shower and a shared outdoor kitchen (with roof) that is equipped with a stove, fridge, some pans and kitchenware for basic cooking as well as some seatings. The kitchen is right in front of the room.

If you are on a budget, are easy-going, nature-loving persons and would like to experience the real Caribbean and its people and share with like-minded travelers, this charming local mini-hostel (with just three rooms) is the place for you!

The family has two kids (6 & 11 years-old) and lives on the same property in the house next-door. They have been living in the area all their lives and are great sources of information all around the area, wildlife and local food and traditions. They and their family are passionate fishermen and will be happy to provide fresh fish and lobsters for reasonable prices every time they make a catch. They can also take you on private hikes, kayak tours and snorkel adventures for fair rates.

Guest Access

Wifi available in the room.
Laundry service 6$ per load (only washing, no drying)
Bus pickup service in Puerto Viejo: 8$ per way
They also offer shared lunch or dinner for very accessible prices, just ask them!

Interaction with Guests

The families English is pretty basic still, so you will need to apply your Spanish or hands and feet for communication most of the time :) I will take care of all your questions and arrangements prior to your stay and am happy to assist with any questions or problems during your time here (I just live 300 mts. away). I can also assist with your tour and transportation arrangements, should you need any help.

The Neighborhood

Just 400 mts. from the small community of Playa Chiquita (with supermarket, some restaurants and a bar) and 400 mts in both directions to some of the most beautiful beaches of the area (Playa Chiquita and Punta Uva).

Getting around

There is regular public transportation between Manzanillo and Cahuita. Best way to get around are bikes, that can be rented at our friends for 5$ a day.

  • This little homestay sorrounded by forest is one of the nicest and most welcoming places I've stayed. The colourful rooms share a kitchen and bathroom with the equally nice room upstairs. Anja helps to manage the rental of these rooms within the grounds of Roseo and Andres home, who are some of the nicest people you will meet. Anja was fast in her response to the booking, picked us up from the bus station and is not only a lovely lady, but is also there with suggestions on what to do in the area.

  • Anja is the liaison for the host Andreas and his wife, Andreas and his family were terrific hosts. They were flexible with our arrival time, the accommodations were simple yet perfect and his family warmly welcomed us. Andreas even invited us to celebrate his birthday with him and his large, loving family, such a wonderful and unique experience! The room is part of a "guest house" behind their family home, the kitchen was shared with a lovely French woman upstairs and the other side of the house was occupied by a German family. Their property is beautiful; full of life and fresh fruits. The beach is only a 10-15 minute walk away and very easily accessible. There are great restaurants and bars within a 10 minute walk, Puerto Viejo and Manzanillo are only a 10 minute drive away. If you would like a local experience of this gorgeous region, stay with Andreas and his family, we're so lucky and thankful for the experience!

  • Great stay! Many thanks to Anja and the Hernandez family for making this part of my stay in Costa Rica so easy and comfortable.

I didn't get to meet Anja in person, but she was easy to reach by text and phone to help me figure out how to get to the house, and the Hernandez family was also very sweet and helpful. They answered questions, gave me fresh lychees from the tree in their yard, rented me a bike, and one night even brought me some home-made soup! They are great hosts.

The room is exactly as described and photographed: basic but perfectly functional, safe, comfortable and clean, with a fan, an electrical outlet, lots of shelves, and a decent wi-fi connection. I didn't use the kitchen much, but it also had all the basics. The location couldn't be better: 10 minutes walk to the beach and to places to eat and buy supplies; easy biking distance to Puerto Viejo, the Jaguar Rescue Center, and Punta Uva; and a short hike from a cacao farm tour.

Tips for future guests: 1) The bathroom is perfectly functional and clean, but pretty tiny, so if you're built like a quarterback or super claustrophobic, it might be a tight squeeze for you. 2) If you're arriving late, after the shops close, bring some drinking water. It's a short walk to the nearest shop with drinking water, so you'll just need enough for the night. 3) Bring a flashlight if you think you might be out and about on foot/on a bike after sunset (around 6pm). It's really, really dark after sunset, so you might have a hard time finding your way back from the beach without a flashlight. 4) Take the cacao farm tour; it's super interesting to see how chocolate is produced.

Overall, this was a great experience and a real bargain - I'd definitely stay here again, and I recommend other people stay here, too. Thanks again!

  • Anja's place is the perfect little get away from the normally packed/busy hostels! The family next door was super helpful, even though we couldn't communicate with much spanish, they were willing to put up with our 'sign language.'
It's only a short bike ride to the store and a super chill 25min. ride(no hills) into the heart of Puerto Viejo. You can grocery, you can cook, and you can sleep peacefully through the night.
The outdoor kitchen was totally operational, and clean, as was the bedroom, with shelving you could put things on. Towels included!

    Vielen Dank!

My whole stay (of two weeks) was very wonderful!
The room and the kitchen are like they are showed on the pictures and all was clean.
    The Wifi worked well.
Just the open-air-bathroom is very small and simple.

The family is wonderful and helped me out very welcoming with all my questions (spanish is helpful).

The neighbourhood is perfect, everything you need is nearby, but also you are not directly in the touristy trouble of Puerto Viejo. To have a bike is great!

In the end: I chose the right "home" and I'd definitly come back!
    Thank you!

    Muchas gracias!
