Simplicity in paradise! Lovely homestay opportunity with an awesome young local fam and their two lovely kids. Close to some of the greatest beaches of the area and in walking distance to the sweet community of Playa Chiquita. Great deal!

The space

This is the place of a super sweet local family that I have been friends with for over six years now.

They have a simple but beautifully authentic Caribbean-style double house, with one cabina with own bathroom and a small kitchen on one side, and two small private rooms on two floors with shared kitchen and shared bathroom on the other side. Big parts of the house have been newly renovated in the last 2 months, and the plan is to improve more details over the course of the next months.

The house is set in a beautiful, well-maintained garden in a quiet and safe neighborhood just 400 mts. from the small community of Playa Chiquita (with super market, some restaurants and a bar) and 400 mts. in both directions to some of the most beautiful beaches of the area (Playa Chiquita and Punta Uva). Puerto Viejo is about 6 km away and can be reached with an easy 30-minute bike ride or by public bus, that runs every two hours and stops just 150 mts. from the house. The nature reserve Gandoca-Manzanillo is about 7 km away and the popular Jaguar Rescue Center just 2 km.

This ad is for the small double room on the bottom floor with a double bed, mosquito net, a fan and some shelves. There is a shared bathroom with cold water shower and a shared outdoor kitchen (with roof) that is equipped with a stove, fridge, some pans and kitchenware for basic cooking as well as some seatings. The kitchen is right in front of the room.

If you are on a budget, are easy-going, nature-loving persons and would like to experience the real Caribbean and its people and share with like-minded travelers, this charming local mini-hostel (with just three rooms) is the place for you!

The family has two kids (6 & 11 years-old) and lives on the same property in the house next-door. They have been living in the area all their lives and are great sources of information all around the area, wildlife and local food and traditions. They and their family are passionate fishermen and will be happy to provide fresh fish and lobsters for reasonable prices every time they make a catch. They can also take you on private hikes, kayak tours and snorkel adventures for fair rates.

Guest access

Wifi available in the room.
Laundry service 6$ per load (only washing, no drying)
Bus pickup service in Puerto Viejo: 8$ per way
They also offer shared lunch or dinner for very accessible prices, just ask them!

Interaction with guests

The families English is pretty basic still, so you will need to apply your Spanish or hands and feet for communication most of the time :) I will take care of all your questions and arrangements prior to your stay and am happy to assist with any questions or problems during your time here (I just live 300 mts. away). I can also assist with your tour and transportation arrangements, should you need any help.

Well, first the good things: the accomodation is cheap and is pretty easy to find. You can find restaurants and a supermarket close nearby, but there are no typical sodas. Also nice beaches if you walk to Punta Uva. But: the stay wasn't very nice in total. Miss Fernandez didn't give us a warm welcome, we didn't feel like home there. When we arrived there was no nice 'Hello, how are you? Did you have a nice travel?' (not in Spanish, because they don't speak English). She only showed us our room and the other stuff, and that's it. The shelves were mostly dirty and not clean, the mattress smelled like urin which was disgusting. And also the mosquito net didn't protect us from mosquitos at all, because there many holes in it (also pretty big ones). Even if the shower looks nice with all the mosaics, the shower head was very dirty and it seemed that it hasn't been cleaned for a while. The description also says that the family offers dinner in exchange for money. We stayed 6 nights and in this time they never asked us our told us that they have this offer. All in all: if you want to, you can stay here for cheap money, but I would never stay there again. We were very disappointed.

We stayed for four nights and loved it! Andres Family was very nice and welcoming (buy their delicious chicken!), basic kitchen and room. Wifi worked without problems. Supermarket, restaurants, and beaches really are close by. Ask their neighbor Antonio for an inexpensive lift to Puerto Viejo in the most awesome TukTuk. Thanks for the great time and great communication, Anja!

The Hernandez family were warm welcoming and very hospitable upon arrival. They are an adorable family and Ms. Hernandez is really sweet. She was very responsive to all our needs and helped us enjoyed our vacation even more. Shout out to Shakira for being an awesome play pal

This place is perfect. It's close to food, adorable, and hidden away. There are excellent activities to do around, and the wildlife is amazing. We saw an iguana within our first 30 minutes!

Great place to stay. I highly recommend although it's a bit hard to find and we did not meet Anja or the family. Apart from that it's a top place to stay!!! Book now!
