Simplicity in paradise! Lovely homestay opportunity with an awesome young local fam and their two lovely kids. Close to some of the greatest beaches of the area and in walking distance to the sweet community of Playa Chiquita. Great deal!
EXPERIENCE THE REAL CARIBBEAN OF COSTA RICA IN THIS SYMPATHETIC LOCAL MINI-HOSTEL
This is the place of a super sweet local family that I have been friends with for over six years.
They have a simple but beautifully authentic Caribbean-style double house, with one cabina with own bathroom and a small kitchen on one side, and two small private rooms on two floors with shared kitchen and shared bathroom on the other side. Big parts of the house have been newly renovated in the last 2 months, and the plan is to improve more details over the course of the next months.
The house is set in a beautiful, well-maintained garden in a quiet and safe neighborhood.
This listing is for the small double room on the second floor with a double bed, mosquito net, a fan, some shelves and a little balcony. The shared bathroom with cold water shower is downstairs as is the shared outdoor kitchen (with roof) that is equipped with a stove, fridge, some pans and kitchenware for basic cooking as well as some seatings.
If you are on a budget, are easy-going, nature-loving persons and would like to experience the real Caribbean and its people and share with like-minded travelers, this charming local mini-hostel (with just three rooms) is the place for you!
The family has two kids (6 & 11 years-old) and lives on the same property in the house next-door. They have been living in the area all their lives and are great sources of information all around the area, wildlife and local food and traditions. They and their family are passionate fishermen and will be happy to provide fresh fish and lobsters for reasonable prices every time they make a catch. They can also take you on private hikes, kayak tours and snorkel adventures for fair rates.
Wifi available in the room.
Laundry service 6$ per load (only washing, no drying)
Bus pickup service in Puerto Viejo: 8$ per way
They also offer shared lunch or dinner for very accessible prices, just ask them!
Interaction with Guests
The families English is pretty basic still, so you will need to apply your Spanish or hands and feet for communication most of the time :) I will take care of all your questions and arrangements prior to your stay and am happy to assist with any questions or problems during your time here (I just live 300 mts. away). I can also assist with your tour and transportation arrangements, should you need any help.
Just 400 mts. from the small community of Playa Chiquita (with supermarket, some restaurants and a bar) and 400 mts in both directions to some of the most beautiful beaches of the area (Playa Chiquita and Punta Uva). Puerto Viejo is about 6 km away and can be reached with an easy 30-minute bike ride or by public bus, that runs every two hours and stops just 150 mts. from the house. The nature reserve Gandoca-Manzanillo is about 7 km away and the popular Jaguar Rescue Center just 2 km.
There is regular public transportation between Manzanillo and Cahuita. Best way to get around are bikes, that can be rented at our friends for 5$ a day.
Anja was quick to respond and communicate, she also picked us up at the bus station for ($8). Our stay with the Hernandez family was a beautiful experience, we loved the room, the family are so friendly and the location is perfect. Just ten minutes walk to beautiful beaches and unspoilt jungle areas. The supermarket is well stocked and easily reached by walking, we used the small shared kitchen to prepare meals - lovely to wake up to the beautiful garden with freshly brewed coffee. Bicycles can be rented for the easy, flat cycles rides along this 12km stretch of coastline. We would recommend anyone who wants to stay outside the busier nightlife of Viejo de Talamanca town to stay here (although buses are frequent and taxis can be arranged). A great experience and a wonderful introduction to an authentic Costa Rica.
I only stayed here two nights but had an amazing time, wish it would have been longer. The house is in the middle of nature, far enough from touristy Puerto Viejo but close enough to restaurants and a supermarket. Playa Chiquita and the other beaches around are beautiful, you should definitely rent a bike for a one day trip across the coast. I highly recommend this place!
I spent one week with the very kind Hernandez family. I felt very welcome. Very nice room and kitchen, everything is as described one the site. I travelled alone and felt very safe in the neighbourhood and at my place and at the nearby beach. Almost every evening I had a meal with the family. Thanks for cooking vegetarian for me, Rocio! It was very delicious.
Anja arranged for me very nice trips to Cachuita, MAnzanillo and the Keköldy indiginas reserve. Specialy that tour with the Guide Kechuar was very good and informative, and with a delicious lunch as wel. Anja answered al my questions very patiencely :-), thank you Anja. Highly recomandable!
Sehr nette Familie!!
The room was comfortable and clean and the kitchen area is perfect for easier cooking. The location is great, it's close some beautiful beaches, restaurants and a supermarket. Also the family is very sweet and helpful.
Really enjoyed staying here and I would do it again if I ever find myself in the area!
Une Famille adorable et très accueillante, avec qui nous avons partagé un très bon repas typic.
La description du logement est très honnête, il ne manquait rien et l'on a pas eu besoin de plus.
An absolut lovely place in the jungle and close to the beach. You can hear the monkeys and the louds of the jungle. It is clean and all is build by the family. The rooms they rent are so colourfull. I had the room under the roof, it is perfect. Clean and with an own balcony. The kitchen is downstairs, basic but a perfect place to relaxe in a hamock. The Family is so nice and helpfull. It is better if you can speak a bit spanish because only Andres is speaking very basic english. But don't worry, i can't speak spanish and we could unterstand each other also with the help from google translator. By the way, the WiFi connection is very good as well:)
It is 5 km away from town, but don't worry you can rent a bike. It is easy to bike there.
I really enjoyed my stay at this place. I learned how to make platanos and how they prepair their fish. We played cards together and had a great time.
Muchos gracias por todo :)
