Lovely 1-BR cottage in choice neighborhood in Santa Cruz California. 5 minute walk to beach. Located in tranquil Westside Santa Cruz between the Lighthouse and Natural Bridges Beach. Very quiet and private. Patios in front and back.
Fenced backyard has beautiful succulent plants plus a lemon and maple tree.
Public transit (bus) on nearby street.
Recently remodeled bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen. Queen bed in bedroom and sofa bed in living room that opens to double bed. The bed in the bedroom is new, and has a foam "topper" over the mattress---very comfortable!! The living room walls are constructed of beautiful old redwood. A beautiful bamboo floor has just been installed in the living room.
The bathroom has an extra large tiled shower with a skylight, as well as a new vanity, tiled floor, and linen closet. The kitchen has four windows that open to the backyard and patio.
Walking distance to restaurants and lively Santa Cruz Boardwalk. 30 minute drive to world famous Carmel and 17 mile drive along gorgeous California coast.

Help yourself to any of these. Outdoor grill. Linens, dishes, and pots and pans (website hidden) with Dish receiver and DVD. No WiFi, but WiFi is available about 5 minutes away in a very cozy coffee house.
NOTE: Included in the per night fee that is listed, there is a 11% Hotel Tax required by the City of Santa Cruz of all accommodations rented on a transient basis. For example, a $120 per night fee includes $106.80 for rent plus $13.20 in Hotel Tax. We will maintain a receipt of the tax that you pay to the City.
Guests have access to patios in front and back of the cottage. Beautiful succulent plants, a maple tree and a lemon tree are in back. There is a washer and dryer on the back porch of the 2-story house next to the cottage.
Interaction with Guests
I typically communicate through email and phone.
We love the neighborhood, which is in the choice Westside area of Santa Cruz between the Lighthouse and Natural Bridges beach. Unlike the noisy and congested Boardwalk area, this is very quiet. The cottage is close enough to the ocean that you can often smell the salt air. Very private location, set back from the road. SEE COMMENTS UNDER "EXTRA DETAILS."
Off street parking in front of cottage. There is a bus that stops one street away from Alta Avenue. On foot, walkable to Natural Bridges Beach and the Boardwalk (the latter about a 20 minute walk from cottage along the ocean). By car, a 10 minute ride to downtown.
Wonderful restaurants nearby! See suggestions in pamphlets on magazine
rack to left of kitchen entry.
Other Things to Note
I always trumpet the peacefulness of the neighborhood. However, there will be a few months in summer and fall 2015 when there will be noise in the daytime.
For guests who want to book for the months
May through September 2015, a "heads up"
My next door neighbor just informed me that he is building a new house on his lot. (I WISH HE HAD CONSULTED ME FIRST). This means that from about 8:30am to 5 pm there will be the usual construction noise. No noise on
weekends or after 5pm. If you expect to be out and about during most of the day, this may not bother you. But I'd rather let you know ahead of time so you can decide.
Previous guests have been thrilled with the location so close to the beach. They also love the neighborhood and the fact that the cottage is set well back from the street---very private.
Quiet neighborhood; no loud music after 10pm. Follow procedures in "information for guests" (which is emailed to you after you confirm your reservation) and is left on coffee table or magazine rack in living room).
If you have a car, park it in the straight driveway in front of the cottage..
Not a party house!
No pets; non smokers only
This was a wonderful place for my wife and I to visit family. Clean, comfortable, and two blocks from the ocean. Everything was as described in the ad and we were very happy.
The home was as pictured but we had some problems. The first night a rodent, large and squeaking kept us up all night. We spoke to the caretaker about it and he tried to get a pest control person out to the house (the hosts were away traveling) but there were no appointments available while we were there.
The electric heaters kept tripping each other so we had either heat in the bathroom or bedroom but not both. It was a cold week and this was a big inconvenience.
The home was moderately clean..piles of dust everywhere.
The fire detector was chirping so we took out the battery.
There is no wi-fi as advertised but the phone service is very spotty and bad.
The best part about this house was in proximity to the beach and the private driveway for parking. I would not go back to this house.
Rosanna: I understand your frustration with these issues. And I apologize for these problems. My pest control specialist came out right after you left and did a number of things to resolve the problem I have a monthly service to deal with this; I may have to get another company. Regarding cleaning, I am following through on your remarks. Many guests have specifically commented on how clean the place is, so this particular time my cleaner was not thorough in her job. I have put her "on notice" that her work doesn't pass muster. Thanks for your patience. I want to compensate you for your unpleasant experience and I will follow up on that.
I had a great time! The place was clean and the neighborhood was quiet and close to the beach. Thanks for such a great place to stay at!
Socorra: So glad you liked the place. I had wanted to write a review for you, but I was out of the country for over 2 weeks, and the time allotted for my review had expired. You were a great guest, and it was my pleasure to have you visit! Hope you can stay on another occasion. Gail
My friend and I had a wonderful weekend at Gail's cottage. It was located right by the beautiful ocean, and at night, you can even hear the waves. The cottage itself is very clean and well lit. It gets chilly at night, but there are plenty of personal heaters. The bathroom had lots of clean towels and soap, and the kitchen had everything we needed to make a hearty breakfast of scrambled eggs, bacon, and pancakes. Thank you for a delightful weekend!
The cottage was just as described - quiet, nice grounds, excellent location near West Cliff. Laundry and cooking facilities, extra sheets and towels (and beach towels) all thoughtfully provided. Nice large shower.
Gail was extremely nice and very communicative. She called before and after we had arrived and checked to make sure that everything was satisfactory and as expected. We did have one unexpected issue during the stay which Gail was extremely quick, gracious, and generous in resolving immediately.
Had a wonderful trip running through redwoods and along beautiful coastline, and it was so nice to reminisce and see in the New Year in Santa Cruz, and Gail's cottage was in the ideal location.
We really enjoyed our vacation here. The location is fantastic - just two short blocks from the ocean, where I walked every morning along the cliffs. Downtown is only minutes away by car. The cottage had everything we needed. It's super quiet and the bed was really comfortable. We cooked several meals in the kitchen, which is nice and sunny in the mornings. Would definitely stay here again!
A nice, very clean place in a very safe neighborhood. Highlights: a super large shower, comfortable bed and a cute cozy back yard. All the cooking essentials were provided. The beach is a couple blocks away. Although i did not meet the host, I received the detailed instructions about the place in the email prior to my arrival. I recommend this place!
I am a "sporty" retiree who loves tennis, hiking, dance, camping, travel and theater.
I adore my cottage in Santa Cruz, where I can inhale the fresh salt air from the Pacific ocean!
