About this listing

Simplicity in paradise! Lovely homestay opportunity with a friendly local family and their two lovely kids. Close to some of the greatest beaches of the area and in walking distance to the sweet community of Playa Chiquita. Great deal!

The space

This is the place of a super sweet local family that I have been friends with for over six years now. Please note that I am usually not on the property myself, and only help the Hernandez manage their reservations online and help with communication, questions or in the event of any problems if necessary. I can always be reached by phone or email.

They have a simple but beautifully authentic Caribbean-style double house, with one cabina with own bathroom and a small kitchen on one side, and two small private rooms on two floors with shared kitchen and shared bathroom on the other side. Big parts of the house have been newly renovated in the last 2 months, and the plan is to improve more details over the course of the next months.

The house is set in a beautiful, well-maintained garden in a quiet and safe neighborhood just 400 mts. from the small community of Playa Chiquita (with super market, some restaurants and a bar) and 400 mts. in both directions to some of the most beautiful beaches of the area (Playa Chiquita and Punta Uva). Puerto Viejo is about 6 km away and can be reached with an easy 30-minute bike ride or by public bus, that runs every two hours and stops just 150 mts. from the house. The nature reserve Gandoca-Manzanillo is about 7 km away and the popular Jaguar Rescue Center just 2 km.

This ad is for the cabina. It has one bedroom with double bed, mosquito net, a fan and some shelves. The small kitchen is equipped with a stove, fridge, some pans and kitchenware for basic cooking. There is a little terrace with table and chairs in the front and a nice tiled bathroom with cold water shower and another little terrace in the back. All floors are tiled with hand-made Caribbean mosaiques, made with love by the owner.

If you are on a budget, are easy-going, nature-loving persons and would like to experience the real Caribbean and its people and share with like-minded travelers, this charming local mini-hostel (with just three rooms) is the place for you!

The family has two kids (6 & 11 years-old) and lives on the same property in the house next-door. They have been living in the area all their lives and are great sources of information all around the area, wildlife and local food and traditions. They and their family are passionate fishermen and will be happy to provide fresh fish and lobsters for reasonable prices every time they make a catch. They can also take you on private hikes, kayak tours and snorkel adventures for fair rates.

Guest access

Wifi available in the room.
Laundry service 6$ per load (only washing, no drying)
Bus pickup service in Puerto Viejo: 8$ per way
They also offer shared lunch or dinner for very accessible prices, just ask them!

Interaction with guests

The families English is pretty basic still, so you will need to apply your Spanish or hands and feet for communication most of the time :) I will take care of all your questions and arrangements prior to your stay and am happy to assist with any questions or problems during your time here (I just live 300 mts. away). I can also assist with your tour and transportation arrangements, should you need any help.

The neighborhood

Just 400 mts. from the small community of Playa Chiquita (with supermarket, some restaurants and a bar) and 400 mts in both directions to some of the most beautiful beaches of the area (Playa Chiquita and Punta Uva).

Getting around

There is regular public transportation between Manzanillo and Cahuita. Best way to get around are bikes, that can be rented at our friends for 5$ a day.

This is a basic homestay with decent amenities such as an outdoor kitchen with stove, outdoor seating area with hammock and colourful interior. Shower is cold water only and bathroom is outdoors. The family are approachable but didn't interact much with us so did not feel like we learned much about daily life here. Location is great. Walking distance to beach and supermarket. This is really a colourful shack in the garden so be prepared for creepy crawleys. We saw several large ones inside the mosquito net includibg a huge cricket one night. When we stayed here we had a problem with bugs biting us in the bed. We didn't realise where they were for a few nights then it became clear they were in the bed, possibly bed bugs. After we left we told Anja who was responsive and helpful and issued some refund to pay for our laundry. We were advised that the mattress has been changed.

Communication with Anja before our arrival was ok. However, we did not hear from her once we were at Puerto Viejo. She did not check upon us to see if everything was ok. The house is sitting in a beautiful location surrounded by nature. You can see and hear a lot of animals. Unfortunately, the Hernandez family can be very loud. They had a party over twice. The first time their guests left on time so that we could still enjoy our night, but the second time we had to ask to respect our night rest. As a courtesy to guests of a guesthouse, you would expect them to think of this themselves. We showed quite some interest when we arrived (fishing trip, having a meal with them, ...) but as they didn't realy respond, we didn't actually do anything with them. It's a shame because we were interested and it could have been great! We speak Spanish so this could not have been the reason. The location of the house is ideal for exploring the beaches and the National Parks. There is supermarkt within walking distance and there is a wonderful bakery almost next door. The house is basic but ok.

Very nice place to stay if you are going the Puerto Viejo area! The room had everything we needed and looked exactly like in the pictures. It was beautifully located next to some great beaches and a bicycle ride away from the bigger towns and close to the local supermarket. André was friendly and we rented bicycles from him.

This cute apartment was perfect for us! We knew exactly what to expect and we were pleased to see that everything matched the description (surrounded by nature, fan, kitchenette, etc.). The place was very clean, Rocío was helpful during our stay and the communication with Anja was easy before and during he stay. It's nice that we can rent bike directly from the Hernadez. And props to the mosquito net! ;-) I would definitely recommend this place for anyone who likes animals and nature and wants to find a peaceful place to stay in the Puerto Viejo area. Thanks again !
