About this listing
Simplicity in paradise! Lovely homestay opportunity with an awesome young local fam and their two lovely kids. Close to some of the greatest beaches of the area and in walking distance to the sweet community of Playa Chiquita. Great deal!
EXPERIENCE THE REAL CARIBBEAN OF COSTA RICA IN THIS SYMPATHETIC LOCAL MINI-HOSTEL
This is the place of a super sweet local family that I have been friends with for over six years now.
They have a simple but beautifully authentic Caribbean-style double house, with one cabina with own bathroom and a small kitchen on one side, and two small private rooms on two floors with shared kitchen and shared bathroom on the other side. Big parts of the house have been newly renovated in the last 2 months, and the plan is to improve more details over the course of the next months.
The house is set in a beautiful, well-maintained garden in a quiet and safe neighborhood just 400 mts. from the small community of Playa Chiquita (with super market, some restaurants and a bar) and 400 mts. in both directions to some of the most beautiful beaches of the area (Playa Chiquita and Punta Uva). Puerto Viejo is about 6 km away and can be reached with an easy 30-minute bike ride or by public bus, that runs every two hours and stops just 150 mts. from the house. The nature reserve Gandoca-Manzanillo is about 7 km away and the popular Jaguar Rescue Center just 2 km.
This ad is for the cabina. It has one bedroom with double bed, mosquito net, a fan and some shelves. The small kitchen is equipped with a stove, fridge, some pans and kitchenware for basic cooking. There is a little terrace with table and chairs in the front and a nice tiled bathroom with cold water shower and another little terrace in the back. All floors are tiled with hand-made Caribbean mosaiques, made with love by the owner.
If you are on a budget, are easy-going, nature-loving persons and would like to experience the real Caribbean and its people and share with like-minded travelers, this charming local mini-hostel (with just three rooms) is the place for you!
The family has two kids (6 & 11 years-old) and lives on the same property in the house next-door. They have been living in the area all their lives and are great sources of information all around the area, wildlife and local food and traditions. They and their family are passionate fishermen and will be happy to provide fresh fish and lobsters for reasonable prices every time they make a catch. They can also take you on private hikes, kayak tours and snorkel adventures for fair rates.
Wifi available in the room.
Laundry service 6$ per load (only washing, no drying)
Bus pickup service in Puerto Viejo: 8$ per way
They also offer shared lunch or dinner for very accessible prices, just ask them!
Interaction with Guests
The families English is pretty basic still, so you will need to apply your Spanish or hands and feet for communication most of the time :) I will take care of all your questions and arrangements prior to your stay and am happy to assist with any questions or problems during your time here (I just live 300 mts. away). I can also assist with your tour and transportation arrangements, should you need any help.

There is regular public transportation between Manzanillo and Cahuita. Best way to get around are bikes, that can be rented at our friends for 5$ a day.
The cabina was quaint and clean. Andres and his family were nice and I was able to rent one of their bicycles daily. Anja was responsive to my questions.
The Hernandez family are relaxed and welcoming. We enjoyed our stay here very much - it really is in the jungle with howler monkeys and all kinds birds, lizards and butterflies all around. We rented bikes from the family to get around - the area is really immense.
FYI - if you need to get to San Jose from the house like we did, the bus that goes from Manzanillo to SJ goes right past the house.
It's a very nice place, spacious and clean with all you need. The family is nice and they help wherever they can. And the location -jungle close to the beach- is perfect!!!
Lovely stay with a lovely family. The cabins was simple but nice and clean. Absolutely loved the location and being in the rainforest listening to howler monkeys and having nature all around us. A bit far from the pueblo pero didn't matter - we spent most of our time at the beach which was a quick 5 min walk away from the house. Definitely recommend others to stay here if looking for an authentic experience and want to support a local family & engage in sustainable tourism. Hostess was very friendly and helpful with recommendations on what to do as well.
The Hernandez family are lovely hosts, very friendly and Andres is there to advise and help out if need be. The accommodation is simple, rustic yet we were super comfortable and happy during our 5-day stay here. The kitchen attached to the cabin has all you need and the supermarket is a simple 10 min walk away. Yes, the shower is cold yet the days are hot so it was a refreshing after a long, "hard" sat in the sun in one of the many little swimming holes found along the paradise that is Playa Chiquita. This is not for everyone yet for us it was great :)
That was our first week in costa rica and it was the best place to start a vacation. The beach was close by, the host andres was the friendliest person in the world. He even invited us to his private birthday party where we were finally dancing with his family.
The house is basic, but clean and not a thing is missing. The kitchen has all you need for cooking. We cooked a lot.
They built a nice bed for our daughter! We really liked the way it was done.
The beach is wonderful. The restaurants are great. Kine(great homemade pasta!), the bakery and the ice cream store were our favorites. We booked upon recommendation and we would always book this again.
